The only thing that could have made this better, is if they held the pose at 0:41 for a few seconds and then faded to black, instead of zooming in on Excalibur and Merlin walking away. In mine humble opinion anyway.
This really is the most iconic scene in the whole show.
Its the definitive moment. It defines all that the show stands for. And sums up the greatness of the legends we know and love.

I think what really happened is Merlin had followed the dragon's precise advice: hide the sword where none can wield it. Merlin had to "unlock" the sword for anyone to be able to pull it out. I enjoyed the way they portrayed it.

also i dunno how they're gonna work out that whole "who says arthur has a right to the throne?" angle with the way the story has been setup... arthur and morgana have basically reversed birth heritages.
strange that they haven't explicitly mentioned whether merlin put a spell so that only arthur may wield it, or that he put a charm so that none may pull it out of the stone including arthur. maybe they want merlin to change the spell to only allow arthur to pull it out in season 4... i just hope that when that scene happens, it would be merlin that encourages arthur to pull out excalibur... otherwise it simply won't be done right...

Instead of trying to pull out the sword, the fools should have tried to smash the stone surrounding the sword. Or at the very least, get a team of workers to load the stone and sword altogether into a wagon, and ship it off to your own vaults for safe keeping. ;-)

I wasn't totally sure what to think of this at first, because Excalibur and the Sword in the Stone are two totally different things.
But then I think - Merlin is young, Gwen is a servant ... they've changed lots of small things and incorporated stuff before the Legend we know, like introducing other main characters like Lancelot ... this was such a cool moment, I'll forgive them for being incorrect about the legend again :P lol
maybe Arthur gets the sword when he accepts magic back in Camelot .. he's still got Mordred to face, if Morgause is gone, then maybe Mordred becomes Morgana's next alliance n the major threat to Camelot ..

@grant24678 no in the original Legend Arthur was an illegitimate child, and he pulled the sword from the stone to prove he was worthy of the Kingship ... they can still do it - there could be doubt about Arthur or not ... they could just use it that Arthur has to pull it out because he needs it ... it will work! :P
@PandaBear9971 There was a statement of some sort that said that because Doctor Who is going to be shown later in the year (2011), Merlin will have to be moved back until Jan 2012.
I got the info from a pge on the digital spy website on 'cult', 'merlin', 'news' where it says it was confirmed by the BBC. Its also kinda sad that its only going to be 10 episodes, but at least there's another series.

This shot is beautiful! The forest, the light, Colin, Excalibur, the Dragon's voice ... sooo epic and what a finale for Series 3. Now on to Series 4, I can't wait. I'm going to have to feed off of the three series to get through to next autumn :D
