You guys are arguing since almost a year for a thing that matters '0' today. Typical discussion of who's got the biggest d*ck. Every country here in debate is but a shadow of its past, Portugal, Spain, UK, France today alone they don't mean alot. The only chance you would have to get another glimpse of the past is to wait for a Federated EU (the so called United States of Europe) but with all this nationalistic pride floating around here I really doubt it will happen at least anytime soon.

@tonkrogerio Portugal was an great Empire, we had much less population then all other countrys but we still made one of the biggest colonial empires, we discovered alot of lands that other nation were afraid and incapable of discovering.
We fought alots of strong nations like France Spain etc.
We found a land of wood without gold like the Spanish found in central America, but we planted sugar and become wealthy nation, we monopolized Indian trade, spice trade.

After that the spanish, english and french came and started building their own empires. And because of their larger population they got bigger ones and became more powerfull. Portugal never had a large land army, so we could not protect efectively our lands. And then I'd had to speak about the spanish dinasty in Portugal and the Dutch...

By that time, the portuguese population was around 1M, and guess what, the english were over 10M! So were the french +-. So it's not surprising that we didnt had a great land army, but it's still incredible what we've done with so few people. Judgind by this number, you should have had an empire 10 times bigger than the port. and u didnt.

In 1815 Portugal was indeed a second grade empire depending on alliances to sustain it's overseas territories, including Brazil, but in the 16th century it was the biggest european nation and Brazil was totally irrelevant.

@Barkide Spain didn't occupy Portugal. The majority of the portuguese nobility choose the king of Spain to be king of Portugal also, creating the Portuguese-Spanish Empire. It was an union, not an invasion. Yes, Filipe of Spain send an army into Portugal and destroyed the oposition -- what would you expect? Yes, Portugal was an ally of England -- with the union it turned an enemy, because Spain was an enemy of England and Holland. What's the doubt?

Formalmente foi criada uma união dos dois impérios e isso deve-se ao bom juízo de Filipe II de Espanha em não humilhar os portugueses. We fought alots of strong nations like France Spain etc.
We found a land of wood without gold like the Spanish found in central America, but we planted sugar and become wealthy nation, we monopolized Indian trade, spice trade.

After that the spanish, english and french came and started building their own empires. And because of their larger population they got bigger ones and became more powerfull. Portugal never had a large land army, so we could not protect efectively our lands. And then I'd had to speak about the spanish dinasty in Portugal and the Dutch...

By that time, the portuguese population was around 1M, and guess what, the english were over 10M! So were the french +-. @tonkrogerio Portugal was the biggest empire on earth for some years. It declined after the union with Spain but hold on some glory until 1974. It dominated all south atlantic and india ocean navigation and had many territories throught africa and asia.
Other european nations, like Spain, England, France and Holland started their world expansion because of the portuguese conquests. Who do the fuck you think broke the egypcians and turks oppression on the europeans?? Go read some history books.

Portugal owned 10. million km2 in 1815
Spain owned 20.0 million km2 from 1740 to around 1780
China - 14. million km2 in 1790 this was a great achievement as it was all old kingdom land not easy new kingdom ;)
Russia 23. million km2 in 1866
British Empire 33. million km2 1922 (more than triple of Portugal) including Egypt, India, etc NOT just new world places.
the thing that made Portugal "big" was Brazil and that wasn't to difficult to obtain mate.

Portugal effectively dominated south atlantic and half of the indian ocean in the 16th century humiliating everybody on sea and costal lands. In 1815 Portugal was indeed a second grade empire depending on alliances to sustain it's overseas territories, including Brazil, but in the 16th century it was the biggest european nation and Brazil was totally irrelevant.

You dont know shit about history. Why dont you read about the battle of diu? It was a naval battle that decided the faith of the european expansion in asia. There are dozens of sea and land battles that glorify the portuguese people for ever.

Its easy for a country with that kind of technology to be the ruling power, at least for some time, like USA is today. England attacked all portuguese colonies in a time where we werent able to defend us.. Same thing with Napoleon - first helping (for good own reasons) and then trying to rule Portugal for Britain. And we helped England in First World war

@Barkide Spain didn't occupy Portugal. The majority of the portuguese nobility choose the king of Spain to be king of Portugal also, creating the Portuguese-Spanish Empire. It was an union, not an invasion. Yes, Filipe of Spain send an army into Portugal and destroyed the oposition -- what would you expect? Yes, Portugal was an ally of England -- with the union it turned an enemy, because Spain was an enemy of England and Holland. What's the doubt?

@ruinovato Eu sei que perdemos a batalha de Alcantara so por causa de ser em numero menor - como quase sempre na nossa historia (4000 port. contra 19500 esp.).. mas temos de aceitar o facto que esse filho da puta Fillipe II venceu as nossas tropas e ocupou Portugal - sim eu sei que foi uma "Uniao Personal" mas com os filhados Fillipe III-IV Portugal tornou-se ser um vassalo espanhol por causa dos postos na administracao que foram ocupados por espanhoes..

@Barkide Ninguém contesta que a "união" foi forçada mas o facto da oposição militar ter sido fraca revela que boa parte da nobreza portuguesa aceitou a monarquia espanhola e os respectivos beneficios. Formalmente foi criada uma união dos dois impérios e isso deve-se ao bom juízo de Filipe II de Espanha em não humilhar os portugueses. Quando a monarquia espanhola comecou a tentar reduzir a parte portuguesa isso levou logo a uma revolução. O Ricardofaust já é meu velho conhecido.
