US prisons are criminal colleges. Locking ppl up & taking everything away from them, makes them crazy. It doesn't reform anything. Prisoners should be forced to go to school & work full-time jobs. 4 hours of school, 8 hours of work, 5 days a week. It's not slavery, it's earning their food, clothing & shelter. Prisons would actually MAKE money. After working 8 hours a day, 5 days a week for several years & having a diploma/degree/certificate, they will come out ready to be productive citizens.
Inmates are humans too. If they were treated firmly but with respect and humanity, they might respond like human beings. If you burst in on me like that, I would get violent, too. I agree that the guards are using excessive force, but it's not their fault alone. The whole US prison system needs an overhaul, not just to punish people, but to reform them.

When I was in prison one of the inmates told a story to others how when he was in a shower (single shower, one inmate at a time) one female guard came in there to check him out, no real reason at all. He said that he became hard and she kept staring at him. Wow. One female guard I saw was really pretty and sweet. Man I bet she got lots of shit from the prisoners. Even I ogled her out just to see how she would react (no reaction, or didn't take a notice), and I'm a gentleman.
As a Retired Correctional officer who worked in a level 5 prison,I can tell you,the system always Wins,Prison beats a man down,there is no winners doing time.Prison is a place of Great, Fear,Depression,lonelyness,Hate,Regrets. I've visited jails/prisons before with my church group to minister to the Christians and have Bible discussions- we went with our church deacon-he is also a prison chaplain and they aren't nice places- they smell like a restroom/lockeroom are not often climate controlled so they are very hot or cold depending on the weather. They are also loud because of all the hard surfaces and people yelling. Not the ideal place most of them want to be. not much privacy either.
Fuck that , I think this method of control is a good idea. Anyone who is in jail is there for a reason whether drugs,murder,rape, etc.you don't go to jail to have fun or be treated like regular humans, you should be going to jail as a punishment for your crime. If this is one way of controling violence, drug use etc. in prison then so be it.
Just because they're already in prison doesn't mean they should be able to deal drugs or murder other inmates with razer blades , etc.

If they comply with instructions no force needs to be used at all. Would you be as sympathetic if one of these guys raped and beat one of your children? Or shot you for a gang initiation? I am just not a corrupt individual and I am going to be part of the justice system in Canada soon enough. If I saw my co-worker get stabbed I would deal with the situation properly, meaning if the con still had a weapon my job would be to subdue him, this could ultimately mean killing him if it came down to it.
