I have played flank for a couple years and my coach asked me if id like to try number 8.. Does anyone have advice for playing 8 man and protecting you scrum half while he throws the ball out of a won scrum.... any tips would be greatly appreciated!
@reyrey3126 only if your technique is shit. Your traps and deltoids get a workout and build up quite a bit. That's why them front rowers end up with no necks.
this video has helped me alot, ive been proping for about 5 years and proper for my county (yorkshire) and ive noticed that by watching this and practicing it at training that it has help me get a better drive though and get a better hit on the their tight head
In this vid, the coach is telling them how to form in a scrum. A scrum is used in rugby, and it's important to know how to do it, because u could injure yourself or just lose the ball.
It's the prop's job to keep the front line solid, while being pushed by the second row. Watch 2:08, it'll show you how the prop and lock (or second row) work together to get power. I'm a 4 lock and need to push the hooker and the loosehead, but if they don't hold the line, my energy is useless.

@smford90 I can give you some tips but I have no idea what level you're at right now. Generally speaking though, make sure that your feet point straight forwards and that you stay on your toes so that you're ready for the "engage". Make sure that you push from your hips and take small steps forwards.
Depends on what tips you want, but if you want the scrum to avoid wheeling towards you and you want to wheel from your side instead, or just avoid it from collapsing altogether if you have a weak front row, then pinch the skin on the other teams tight head on the opposing team, at the exact same moment that you engage. At this point, the ref cant call it for playing dirty as this is where you bind when you scrum, twist the pinched skin and this will cause the tight head will end tryi
@Tovman to stand up from the pain. This will cause him to loose balance and the scrum will either wheel or move forwards :P but this is ofcourse if you mind playing a little dirty. Otherwise just keep a straight back, and make sure that you push upwards after the engage. keep pumping your feet and try synchroniuze your push with the rest of the forwards.
@smford90 On the engage come in and up. And when you feel your losing the scrum push your upper body upwards the tight head will be crushed between your forwards and his own second and third row;)
@smford90 lol lucky for u im a loosehead prop, and i manage to drive my opposite number back every single time, firstly what u wanna do is make a huge first hit on the engage absloutly smash ur opposite number, second is to have a good grip on ur opposite tighthead , try to get your hand on the side of his shorts, when the ball is put in the easiest thing to do is drive INWARDS towards the scrum so that u get the tighthead in a sort of diagnol position and then u just drive from there
If you value the impact of the scrum then view the all blacks taking the welsh scrum apart then creating the opportunity for the back row to attack the try line. This is training put into practice. View on RED9RUGBY its power beyond reason!
