He was brilliant, gallant, charming, intelligent, and also humorous & chivalrous. I grew up as a British child in Tanganyika in the 1950's & 60's, & the legend of this great man was still talked of around fires by the watu, who were the people who became his askaris. Vorbeck's name will live on!

The most brilliant thing of Von Lettow, is that he never fought a single battle without being outnumbered, and yet he was never defeated, and had never lost one battle. Ich meinte nämlich, mein Vorredner meinte, L-V hätte an der Niederschlagung des (Achtung:) Maji-Maji-Aufstandes mitgewirkt. Also eine Wissenslücke meinserseits.

Paul Von Lettow-Vorbeck ... I've just read stuffs about him on wikipedia, and I must say that I truly admire him : perfect gentleman, fearsome soldier, educated and open-minded man, AND not racist (which is, amongst his contemporary fellows, rare enough to be mentioned).
I hope History will give him the status of hero he deserves.

The German & Swiss helmets were the best modern steel helmets made... Well a guy I work with said that he had the German M-40 helmet in the German army in 1976.
And said WWI & WWII German helmets were still in uses... Is that true?

I've read that old steel helmets, of the same size and form as the WW2 German helmet used by the Heer, were in use in the Swedish Reserve Army until the late 1990's at least. Maybe those are even still in use now. Sadly, I can't remember where nor when did I read this, but this mustn't be too hard to find out.

the authors because,i am not at home right now,i am in Iraq,but here in the US Army,we know him very well.He is a studying subject in War Studies.

This helmet was called Stahlhelm M 1A1 later(M60, M62, M62 modified, M 1A1LL. The prototype was the american steel helmet.
The Bundeswehr (German Army) uses today a new "Kevlar-Helmet" which looks like the good old M40.
