Thanks for posting this! I was there and as I recall he taxied back to where he started his engines on his remaining energy! He called it Energy Management. Thanks for the memory! Zaction, if you went to any of the teen stuff you might know my daughters! LOL
Yeah, as for how hard he pushed the aircraft, I talked with him at air airshow in the late 90's...he said he does his entire routine and never pulls more than 2.5gs- no sweat for the Shrike. The engines are good for about 700hrs he said, which is pretty amazing considering how they're run here.
probably isnt thrashed at all cos the engines arent doing anthing and he wouldnt be doing more than 3g i wouldnt have thought which the commander can handle fine
@paddy217125 Well, not really - his was re-enfoced and CONSTANTLY checked. Many pilots (particulaly in Austrailia) tried doing the same things with their Shrikes, emulating Bob - And there have been more than 20 cases of wings failing in flight on the Shrikes, most probably due to this...
@blueb0g Bob Hoover himself flew an 'unreinforced' commander in Tasmania, Australia a bit over ten years ago and did the same routine in it.. although I think that same aircraft was involved in a structural failure several years later.. Dont know if it has anything to do with Hoover flying it...
Sweet! Your grandpa was a TP for Douglas? Wow! My Dad worked for them also but not as a pilot. He is a pilot but worked on the avionics systems back then.
Maybe they did.. My Dad was there I think it the late 60's.
I do fly.. but have not in many years. I started taking lessons when I was 14. I am also a licensed A&P but I no longer work on planes either. I have been out of aviation for many years now. now, I just enjoy playing flight sims :)

He always sideloads the landing gear. Does he do that to show the strength of the gear?

some pilots arent able to do this in an extra 300 or edge 540, but he does in his shrike
impressing, probably the best pilot ever

he touches the ground at :57, and all the 'maneuvers' you are seeing prior to that are signature RA hoover-isms! one of his most famous trademarks!!
