I remember when the compulsories were discarded, most people were praising jesus, claiming how boring they were, etc. now we see how much we have lost. Little robots working towards injuries...
I'll be honest with everyone and myself. I have always felt that no one could touch the Soviets on floor compulsory but I am wrong. This is the most ABSOLUTE perfect compulsory floor routine I have ever seen! It actually moved me and I am now speechless.
I love how she extends her body in all of her elements. I loved how the compulsories really focused on the fluidity and grace of gymnastics. So much of that is lost these days.
@jessicacarmon You dipshit, this is a compulsory routine. She was one of the most incredible gymnasts of all time. Compulsories are basic skills that all competitors have to perform; this is not her optional routine.
Far too beautiful for words. One can't but be enchanted by the beauty, grace, and perfection of this compulsory. This girl had everything the sport could ever ask for:difficulty, grace, elegance, control, artistry. THIS IS ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS to all those robots nowadays. If they could just look back in time and try to adopt something ino their routines. She was a one and only far better that Comaneci and anyone else that ever came along. Love you Silivas, True Queen of Gymnastics.
She was enjoying this performance. Look at her face at the begining of the first tumbling run, she looked on fire!. Every once in a while I come to see this vid, just to get inspired...
wow,..., how was the choreographer of this routine?,..,this is ARTISTIC gymnastic,.., no one is better than Silivas for this routine,...,perfect body line, flexibility, rhythm,..., love it.
Silivas is the very last gymnast Romania produced that had complete control of not only her tumbling, but her dance as well. This routine highlights her mastery of the sport of artistic gymnastics. We all know there were plenty of strong tumblers after her from Romania, but no one combined the artistry like she did.
Ya' know, everytime I want to see something beautiful I come back to this routine. It is absolute perfection. Puts a huge smile on my face everytime, beginning with the hand flick after raising her hands for the first time. NOBODY flicked their hands from the core of their body like Daniela did. Heck, that flick started from the core of the earth.
I just had to watch the routine again. How many routines still hold up after 20+ years? Maybe a Nadia routine? Maybe a Yang Bo BB routine circa 1989? Silivas is legend for this routine. IMHO.
Omigosh-You and I both! I think I come to this video at least once or twice everyday-I need my Silivas compulsories fix especially after watching some fine gymnasts' 'artistic' gymnastics that offends my senses.
She absolutely deserved the 10 here...it was perfect. But when the judges then gave Shushonova a 10 on FX compulsories for a much weaker routine, it made the 10 sort of meaningless. The judges ruin everything.
Silivas deserved a 20.00, This routine was light years ahead of the competition imo. Simply sublime routine. The best. It is because of her compulsories that I will always believe she should have had a comfortable lead over Shushunova-and ultimately won the AA gold.
This routine has it all: exhuberance, great lines, extension, amplitude and dynamic dance. Daniela Silivas was marvelous. This routine is forever etched in my mind because it is absolutely phenomenal.
I actually thought the hairdo was cute-and natural-her own curls. The 88 Games was the first time I saw Daniela so I had no other hairdo to compare it too. She was obviously turning into a young lady and thought a perm was a grown up thing to do. I like her hair better though at the 1989 Worlds and later at the Chunichi and Tokyo Cups. She looked very pretty.
I completely agree. It was evident Silivas consistently operated on a different parallel when it came to very basic movement and execution. Which is what compulsories were always about.
Shushu certainly did benefit from her placement in the team lineup (last I think on every event in compulsories). Silivas had to go up second to last in compulsories on vault to the weakened Aurelia Dobre. It may have affected her final score on that event. Dobre really should have gone up first or second. Potorac should have gone last (she looked the strongest on vault for Romania) with Silivas just before.
ITA-Mind you I love Shushu-she had to me the best fx of her career in optionals. But in compulsories-she was good-but not GREAT like Silivas in overall qualities.
I love Shushunova as well. I think she was very dynamic and certainly did a lot for having the bodily restrictions she did. But overall, I think she lacked a lot. Silivas wasn't any revolutionary vaulter but for for her size and weight she was wasn't bad at all. I think overall she had the complete package.
Yes-before the 2000 Olympics they were still competiting compulsory excercises in the first day preliminary team competition-it really separated the women from the girls. And Silivas was the greatest compulsory gymnast overall ever imo.
I think the dive roll could be performed one foot in front of the other, or with 2 feet together on the exit. The Romanians all did the latter variation while the Soviets did the former. I LOVED this routine and her performance of this was jsut magical. Who actually was the best Soviet at Floor compulsories was Omelianchik. Sadly, she was left off the team :(
Bring back the compulsories. Please, please bring back the compulsories. They're the basics from which all great gymnastics is derived...

Shushu should not have been scored so close in compulsories (except for vault) compared to Silivas' compulsory sets.
PhillyGal4Ever 2 years ago 4
I completely agree. It was evident Silivas consistently operated on a different parallel when it came to very basic movement and execution. Which is what compulsories were always about.
WSggs 2 years ago 6
To add to that, Shush leeched off of her top Soviet status to gain unwarranted scores.
Boginskaya and even Baitova should have wiped the floor with Shush in compulsories.
