Jaco was a great bass player, no doubt. But he has since been grossly overrated. He was not the first bass player to front a band. Stanley Clarke released his first solo album three years before Jaco did. Not to mention, of course, players like Mingus who gave the bass prominence even further back.
Jaco had his own sound, but so did Larry Graham show started the thumping movement.
Jaco played for an amazing fusion band, Weather Report, but Alphonso Johnson was there first..
As a bass player myself, I've never really "gotten" Jaco. He's like the Joe Satriani of bass or something. Its showy, but doesn't have much soul. Nothing makes me want to watch this again. Sure, I appreciate his technical skill, but I wouldn't even put him in my top 20 bass players. Technical theatrics can't be gratuitous, they have to come from a place within the song that adds interest or the unexpected. Technical theatrics with Jaco are rote.
@MLATX512 did you ever listen to Come on Come Over? Not to mention his live in New York Performances when he does Medleys over Them Changes and Jimi Hendrix? He has tons and tons and tons of soul. I would judge him based off of a free jazz solo, you might get the wrong Idea. look those up on here, the guy could groove, he was a bit showy at times but since he was the first guy doing it at the time, he sort of got away with it haha.
@bentertainment1 i belive that one is to decide how he want to express himself throught the instrument. no matter if it a guitar, harmonica, piano, or bass.
BRAAAK! Jaco's the best. Jaco's the best. BRAAAK! What a bunch of parrot sheeple. Why do dead guys get an automatic 10 point bonus? (e.g. Morrison, Hendrix, Burton, Elvis, Tupac, Biggie) God forbid Bieber dies before he's 40 instead of fading away. Then we'll have to listen to how "amazing" he is for the next 50+ years.
@kkamagwi I agree with you to a point, but some of these people are truly great. People like hendrix and jaco shouldn't get any extra points just because they're dead, but this should not detract from their overall score. :)
Anyways, the original legends like hendrix/SRV...etc have a certain place in guitar culture that people cant just stop talking about and pretend doesnt exist, others are the "in betweeners" like the fag kid u mentioned and other modern guitarists, they wont be remembered carved in stone but those older guys are the pioneers of electric guitar/bass culture
@kkamagwi well the truth is, there are currently better solo players and even all around better Bass players than Jaco, the thing is Jaco STARTED it and was the first to do what he did. nobody and I mean nobody was playing like he was playing; some even called it "weird". Like with Jimi Hendrix there are hunderds of better players out there today, but the thing those electric and bass guitarist will never have is the SPIRIT. Jaco and Jimi had some undeniable attitude and approach...
@kkamagwi Continued: that you even today's best players can't copy. people have to realize that they are hailed as the best becasue they were the True Innovators that made Bass and electric the instruments they are today. you could argue Jaco's approach was even more crucial because bass was a basic background instrument for about 3 years before his reign

I love Jaco and all he stands for, especially this song. However, personally all I want to hear over and over again is the section at 2:58. Beautiful!
not basing on this video only.... jaco elevated bass guitar through his leads and phrasing . he had ADHD, an unknown disease then, thats why people labelled him as "crazy". its just the musical genius trying to get out of his mind. i think he is the best but he just didnt reach it. thumbs up for his double jointed thumbs. peace. keep on rockin....or in this case... keep on jazzin.

@MonkeyyDG you have a right to your opinion man, but i have not yet seen a bassist with such soul, creativity and touch as jaco... an neither have you... (tho i think michael manring, a student of jacos, is carrying the torch very well!)
@doriafly Are you a musician ? I don't know. But I am, and can assure you Jaco is not a god. Just a good bassist. So stop saying he's god only because others ignorants say it.
@MrStayCoul Not too cool bro. Jaco was a great bassist, NOT just a a good bassist. If someone wants to call him a God, so what? And your grammar sucks. So, perhaps you should put down the sheet music and read a book, Mr. Genius.
@eqsmooth I'm sure you don't even know ONE thing about the bass guitar. You're not able to say if he's good, or not. Actually, I'm french and I'm 16years old. So come speak french with me, I 'll see if you'll do mistakes or not.
@eqsmooth "16year olds know nothing about anything in any language". I bet I'm better than you in Spanish and in Hebrew. Moreover, I can easily speak english with somedoby, while you can't in French. So, my little idiot, go learn languages, go buy a brain, and come back to talk with a teenager (me) who is more intelligent than you. Thannnnnnk you ! :)
@MrStayCoul Listen shit head! This is a sacred Jaco video. Pastorious was the greatest jazz bassist of his time. Quit shitting on his grave you little pecker head. This is about bass, not your opinion of who is God and how many languages you can speak. Get out of high school and travel. See the world and STFU when older, more experienced people are talking to you. You have no respect, but you will learn, especially if you are as smart as you say you are.
@eqsmooth "Pastorious was the greatest jazz bassist of his time." I totally agree. But I'm not sure that it is enought to be considerated like a God. Are you kidding ?! YOU told about my language ! Plus, you don't know me, you don't know if I travel or not. I can assure you I do. Maybe I'm not an adult, but nevertheless you can respect my point of view.
@MarineCyborg In the first time, we only know the most famous bassits, but there are a lot of others who are not, and still are genius.
I would say Victor wooten or Stanley Clarke are better. In my opinion, Jaco deserves respect because he invented a new bass style and influenced a lot of musicians. But he's overrated, and I hate it. I think it's only because he died young, as Cliff burton, and people love venerating dead musicians.
Personally - I think that Pastorius is better that Wooten, though I haven't heard much of Stanley Clarke. From what I have, it seems he's technically amazing.
Why wouldn't I expect an answer like that from an idiot? You simply express a position that reflects a non-musician criticizing something you don't understand. It has become the new American way. This country is fast becoming a country that does not read, research, or ask before it opens its mouth. That's why radio talk shows and blogs are filled with idiot comments based on opinion and little to no facts. Did you expect that answer? No!
Don't be a perpetual idiot. Read or ask next time.
The nature of Jazz is to play freely what you feel. It should not be a locked in style though it occurs to a degree because your feelings are yours and no one elses.
One thing I learned in my early years of music is that a musician feeds off of the presentation of another if he is listening. Jaco was a man of many feelings as evident that you could not peg his style. That's a good thing for Jaco. Jazz artist desire is to never stop growing, changing, and learning.
@54NT14G0 idk why. this is terrible. hes just playing random sounds. do all of you people REALLY think this is good? or is it just a huge troll movement?

@eqsmooth "Pastorious was the greatest jazz bassist of his time." I totally agree. But I'm not sure that it is enought to be considerated like a God. Are you kidding ?! YOU told about my language ! Plus, you don't know me, you don't know if I travel or not. I can assure you I do. Maybe I'm not an adult, but nevertheless you can respect my point of view.

@MrStayCoul
Name someone who is better?
Seriously.
Possibly Jameson, but who else?
Perhaps you could explain WHY you're contention is correct, not simply stating that it is.

@MarineCyborg Ummm...Stanley Clarke is definately on par! IMO
chemicalx420 2 months ago
@MarineCyborg In the first time, we only know the most famous bassits, but there are a lot of others who are not, and still are genius.
I would say Victor wooten or Stanley Clarke are better. In my opinion, Jaco deserves respect because he invented a new bass style and influenced a lot of musicians. But he's overrated, and I hate it. I think it's only because he died young, as Cliff burton, and people love venerating dead musicians.

@MrStayCoul
Personally - I think that Pastorius is better that Wooten, though I haven't heard much of Stanley Clarke. From what I have, it seems he's technically amazing.

It wasnt the music that Jaco made so much as his ability to make it.
This kind of free form music was a typical thing for him. They guy went nuts before he was able to REALLY make the music that was in him.

this sounds like one of those 'shreds' videos where they put shitty noodling over the top of the real playing

Yea,
Its call jazz.
