  • alguna vez se dio cuenta q estaba tocando un bajo?, hijo de dios es increible este tipo

  • Jaco non è morto per droga o alcol, è STATO ASSASSINATO!!!

  • Jaco was a great bass player, no doubt. But he has since been grossly overrated. He was not the first bass player to front a band. Stanley Clarke released his first solo album three years before Jaco did. Not to mention, of course, players like Mingus who gave the bass prominence even further back.

Jaco had his own sound, but so did Larry Graham show started the thumping movement.

Jaco played for an amazing fusion band, Weather Report, but Alphonso Johnson was there first..

  • @TheSoundsofthesouth who gives a shit if there was other bass players that fronted bands before him

  • Listen to this, then listen to Victor Wooten playing Amazing Grace

  • As a bass player myself, I've never really "gotten" Jaco. He's like the Joe Satriani of bass or something. Its showy, but doesn't have much soul. Nothing makes me want to watch this again. Sure, I appreciate his technical skill, but I wouldn't even put him in my top 20 bass players. Technical theatrics can't be gratuitous, they have to come from a place within the song that adds interest or the unexpected. Technical theatrics with Jaco are rote.

  • @MLATX512 did you ever listen to Come on Come Over? Not to mention his live in New York Performances when he does Medleys over Them Changes and Jimi Hendrix? He has tons and tons and tons of soul. I would judge him based off of a free jazz solo, you might get the wrong Idea. look those up on here, the guy could groove, he was a bit showy at times but since he was the first guy doing it at the time, he sort of got away with it haha.

  • Fucking genius

  • うますぎる。

  • No but really, I don't get this, I the harmonic things are cool but putting on 7th on greatest of all time is very strange to me.

  • Tocava muito, bicho!!

  • The amount of single minded assholes finding this vid.

"YAAGAHAHRHRHA BASS KAN NO BE OWN INSTRUMANT!! HE SUKK!"

    >_>

  • bass gymnastics

  • Asshole got what he deserved.

  • @IsItOnTab Fuck you man!!

  • why is only counting my views?

  • i mean...theres no beat. And bass without beat is like running without feet.

  • @bentertainment1 its called "revolutionizing"

  • @bentertainment1 i belive that one is to decide how he want to express himself throught the instrument. no matter if it a guitar, harmonica, piano, or bass.

  • i know he is genious but "show off" how he play himself yha hahaha he is really good but sad....

  • i bet there was a jumbotron on the other side, showing some kind of sport event or something like that... that would explain the cheering crowd

  • @tsubasa1909 LOL

  • I respect his ability, but in all honesty, I don't understand his music. I guess I'm just not one for jazz :(

  • @TheLexiV , playing the bass and not understanding this U oughta be a shamed of yourself or study harder!!!! this is Virtousity at it highest.

  • BRAAAK! Jaco's the best. Jaco's the best. BRAAAK! What a bunch of parrot sheeple. Why do dead guys get an automatic 10 point bonus? (e.g. Morrison, Hendrix, Burton, Elvis, Tupac, Biggie) God forbid Bieber dies before he's 40 instead of fading away. Then we'll have to listen to how "amazing" he is for the next 50+ years.

  • @kkamagwi I agree with you to a point, but some of these people are truly great. People like hendrix and jaco shouldn't get any extra points just because they're dead, but this should not detract from their overall score. :)

  • @kkamagwi Wow, rage....

Anyways, the original legends like hendrix/SRV...etc have a certain place in guitar culture that people cant just stop talking about and pretend doesnt exist, others are the "in betweeners" like the fag kid u mentioned and other modern guitarists, they wont be remembered carved in stone but those older guys are the pioneers of electric guitar/bass culture

  • @kkamagwi well the truth is, there are currently better solo players and even all around better Bass players than Jaco, the thing is Jaco STARTED it and was the first to do what he did. nobody and I mean nobody was playing like he was playing; some even called it "weird". Like with Jimi Hendrix there are hunderds of better players out there today, but the thing those electric and bass guitarist will never have is the SPIRIT. Jaco and Jimi had some undeniable attitude and approach...

  • @kkamagwi Continued: that you even today's best players can't copy. people have to realize that they are hailed as the best becasue they were the True Innovators that made Bass and electric the instruments they are today. you could argue Jaco's approach was even more crucial because bass was a basic background instrument for about 3 years before his reign

  • @jryuwah Edit: 30 years not 3

  • @jryuwah shutup you cunt, i bet you think your special because you play a bit of bass and you think you know about the intricasies of groove or watever, man just play and get off youtube

  • Fantastic I love it...

  • RIP Jaco.

  • ...?

  • Jazz ! :)

  • :0

    tracy was perfect!

  • I don't get it

  • @wcr4 lol for real wen does it get good?

  • @wcr4 drugs

  • @wcr4 - think Squarepusher then go around the corner and bag a clarky cap - its worth the walk

  • he is genius, no doubt about it.

  • I'm a Jaco fan, but this is incoherent nonsense he's playing here....

  • i love his tone! Is that chorus or flanger or something?

  • I knew him in his final days. He died homeless and penniless...and without good reason. Tragic story.

  • Comment removed

  • This page of comments has almost all positive posts, and only one or two negatives. For YouTube, that's pretty amazing. Usually when the music is this interesting, and makes a few demands on the listener, a lot more Neanderthals come out of the woodwork to protest it.

  • HE IS FUCKING STONED

  • @asconblake AND HE IS MAKING BEAUTIFUL MUSIC!!!

  • I can't believe people listen to this shit. Most pretentious piece of turd I've ever watched. Every person in the audience there must have had a stiff rod. Benders.

  • @DaylightBraves go out and try to be a "Jaco Pastorius".... just die trying.....

  • @DaylightBraves you sir/madam are a philistine

  • @DaylightBraves you sir/madam are a philisine

  • This video is not interresting....I am so LOLing

  • Pure jazz man

  • musical, visual and spiritual masterpiece, thanks jaco... bro

  • AMAZING tone.

  • jaco is the best!!

  • ひーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー

  • Happy belated, Jaco

  • Somehow, I don't find this soul and feel in Wooten. So much emotion and feel in Jaco's playing.

  • He may or may not have been high as hell while playing this, but he killed it. Anyone who says otherwise probably also thinks Bach was a hack at classical music.

  • 238 Justin Bieber fans have rated this video

  • i have no words

The best god damn bassist in the world ever!!! Happy Bithday JACO!

  • @capemah I've seen his son Felix play 3 times. Jaco made history with his talent, but his son has far surpassed it.

  • awesome Jaco !

  • Happy Birthday Jaco! You are missed.

Jaco, Vic and Stanley are all amazing bass players with very different styles and are all technically amazing. They all bring/brought so much variety to the seemingly simple four stringed intrument.

  • 3:09 Carol Burnette Show theme song! hahaha awesome

  • Personally I think Jaco has a deep sincere musicality (and this song is a perfect example) which I don't hear it Wooten at all.

  • this guy is shockingly shite

  • Is he picking with three fingers?

  • He was before his time.

  • I posted a cover of Jaco's "Come On, Come Over". Please check it out!!!

  • if you both like jaco pastorius then shut the fuck up... oh and french people suck

  • Jaco was / is / will be the Music.

  • not so much portrait of tracy, but A KICKASSOLO

  • wow THIS is friggin VINTAGE man!

  • Learn from Jimmy Haslip that is...

  • You can see where Cliff Burton got some inspiration from for the early days of metallica. I've only just discovered Jaco Pastorius from my bass teacher to provide some inspiration. He's amazing! Like some of the other people have said here, there is being technically skilled like Victor wooten or having soul and feeling in your playing like jaco (as well as being technically skilled!). Much like Flea, he's technically skilled but chooses to play simple bass lines. bass is amazing.

  • Wow, his hands must be huge. That Jazz Bass neck looks so small under his hands. The neck seems huge whenever I pick up a Jazz Bass for some reason.

  • None of these modern players come close. Wooten, marcus...I can't remember aside from their technical ability what hits the soul like Jaco. 2 notes versus a thousand if you don't hit the soul...go home :-)

  • 02:57 He´s the BASSMAN!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Give the man a break he's high..........that is Jaco's tone - like it or not - he was born to play the instrument, look at those hands!

  • Comment removed

  • The tone sucks...

  • How can somebody dislike this?

  • Comment removed

  • @minonka12345 the only reason people dislike this is because they are still trying to find the first harmonic of the song on there bass!!!! lol

  • @minonka12345 cause people listen to bullshit nowadays and cant see real talent like actually playing an instrument, if its not on a computer and completely over produced then people dont like it =/ stupid society and there shitty musical taste

  • @minonka12345 the answer is:

    they just listen pop music!!!

  • @minonka12345 Luc Havan has 240 Youtube accounts~

  • @minonka12345 well, to be fair the other 2 million+ votes count as thumbs up. they were just too awed to remember to click the button

  • @minonka12345 Probably mainstream music listeners.

  • @minonka12345 They may be commenting on his pants...that's are there really is to dislike in this video.

  • /watch?v=Zo5yR4x7HxY

  • i love hearing jaco's music again.....it's been a while.....when i was a kid, my father was a bandleader and jaco went on the road with these guys.....my dad has the distinction of putting jaco on a bus for home somewhere on the road....they just didn't get him.....i have bi-polar disorder and i know what it's like to be labled as "crazy", it sucks.....

  • Jaco, I miss you...

  • Jaco started his life as a musician playing drums - However, he broke his arm and was forced to stop. He hereby chose the bass as his new instrument.

Thank god, he broke his arm.

  • @BassmrDK i am pretty sure it was his wrist

  • @Cradley51 It was - My bad

  • I love Jaco and all he stands for, especially this song. However, personally all I want to hear over and over again is the section at 2:58. Beautiful!

  • Jaco is a legend...I wanna see him play this song like on the cd though anyone recommend another link for A portrait of tracy?

  • @octotoke here you go :)

    /watch?v=nBBG_2tPiOU

  • not basing on this video only.... jaco elevated bass guitar through his leads and phrasing . he had ADHD, an unknown disease then, thats why people labelled him as "crazy". its just the musical genius trying to get out of his mind. i think he is the best but he just didnt reach it. thumbs up for his double jointed thumbs. peace. keep on rockin....or in this case... keep on jazzin.

  • @CruxVera he was Bi Polar btw

  • @jryuwah bipolar indeed thanx

  • everyone can think who ever they want is the best. i think hes good but not the best ive seen

  • That MoFo was Crazeee

  • I know he's a great bassist, but I see nothing in it ...XD

  • @cunovaitu then it should be nothing to do this yourself?

  • I miss you man ) :

  • @MonkeyyDG you clearly are retarded.

  • A legend, too bad people lose the ability to judge legends realisticly. He was fucking great, yes. He did some revolutinairy stuff, yes. But after he passed away (which was a shame ofcourse) there have come new bass players that are better. Eventually thanks to Jaco, because he broke a barrier which all bass players can now just pass trough. But people need to stop thinking he is the best.

  • @MonkeyyDG Shut your whore mouth when Jaco is playing

  • @delongefuck

Thank you for proving my point. Also I wrote it after watching the vid.

  • @delongefuck LOL!

  • @MonkeyyDG People need to stop thinking he is the best? Who the fuck you thing you are? God? Sorry, but i'm atheist.

  • @MonkeyyDG you have a right to your opinion man, but i have not yet seen a bassist with such soul, creativity and touch as jaco... an neither have you... (tho i think michael manring, a student of jacos, is carrying the torch very well!)

  • @MonkeyyDG keep silence please when god is playing!!

  • @doriafly Are you a musician ? I don't know. But I am, and can assure you Jaco is not a god. Just a good bassist. So stop saying he's god only because others ignorants say it.

  • @MrStayCoul Not too cool bro. Jaco was a great bassist, NOT just a a good bassist. If someone wants to call him a God, so what? And your grammar sucks. So, perhaps you should put down the sheet music and read a book, Mr. Genius.

  • @eqsmooth I'm sure you don't even know ONE thing about the bass guitar. You're not able to say if he's good, or not. Actually, I'm french and I'm 16years old. So come speak french with me, I 'll see if you'll do mistakes or not.

  • @MrStayCoul

    Merde de taureau!

    Merde de bison!

Je m'appelle eqsmooth and you've been owned yo little shit. 16 year olds know nothing about anything in any language.

  • @eqsmooth "16year olds know nothing about anything in any language". I bet I'm better than you in Spanish and in Hebrew. Moreover, I can easily speak english with somedoby, while you can't in French. So, my little idiot, go learn languages, go buy a brain, and come back to talk with a teenager (me) who is more intelligent than you. Thannnnnnk you ! :)

  • @MrStayCoul Listen shit head! This is a sacred Jaco video. Pastorious was the greatest jazz bassist of his time. Quit shitting on his grave you little pecker head. This is about bass, not your opinion of who is God and how many languages you can speak. Get out of high school and travel. See the world and STFU when older, more experienced people are talking to you. You have no respect, but you will learn, especially if you are as smart as you say you are.

  • @eqsmooth "Pastorious was the greatest jazz bassist of his time." I totally agree. But I'm not sure that it is enought to be considerated like a God. Are you kidding ?! YOU told about my language ! Plus, you don't know me, you don't know if I travel or not. I can assure you I do. Maybe I'm not an adult, but nevertheless you can respect my point of view.

  • @MrStayCoul

    Name someone who is better?

    Seriously.

    Possibly Jameson, but who else?

Perhaps you could explain WHY you're contention is correct, not simply stating that it is.

  • @MarineCyborg Ummm...Stanley Clarke is definately on par! IMO

  • @MarineCyborg In the first time, we only know the most famous bassits, but there are a lot of others who are not, and still are genius.

I would say Victor wooten or Stanley Clarke are better. In my opinion, Jaco deserves respect because he invented a new bass style and influenced a lot of musicians. But he's overrated, and I hate it. I think it's only because he died young, as Cliff burton, and people love venerating dead musicians.

  • @MrStayCoul

Personally - I think that Pastorius is better that Wooten, though I haven't heard much of Stanley Clarke. From what I have, it seems he's technically amazing.

  • @MonkeyyDG I totally agree with you

  • the godfather of bass man victor wooten and flea the like look up too this guy

  • Too bad we lost him

  • is he on some drugs?

  • @NotTonTon Hahhahaha. Is that retoric question? :D

  • i love his use of harmonics

  • jaco the pattern man

  • flea sucks

  • It wasnt the music that Jaco made so much as his ability to make it.

This kind of free form music was a typical thing for him. They guy went nuts before he was able to REALLY make the music that was in him.

  • this sounds like one of those 'shreds' videos where they put shitty noodling over the top of the real playing

  • I love and respect Jaco but something reminds me of these shred videos haha RIP brother Jaco

  • top 3 Bassists

    1.Jaco

    2.Geddy Lee

    3.Flea

  • @Randomguy547 lol @ Flea overrated shit. He's good, it's true, but he's certainly not one of the best.

  • @Randomguy547 i'd reckon victor wooten would be up there somewhere

  • What is a thing?

  • Tracy was so beautiful that made people wild who tried to portray her

  • What genius!

  • my Heroe

  • Sorry about that last comment, I thought this was the whole solo, see the complete solo for what I referring to.

  • buh buh boo buh buh buh

  • Why wouldn't I expect an answer like that from an idiot? You simply express a position that reflects a non-musician criticizing something you don't understand. It has become the new American way. This country is fast becoming a country that does not read, research, or ask before it opens its mouth. That's why radio talk shows and blogs are filled with idiot comments based on opinion and little to no facts. Did you expect that answer? No!

Don't be a perpetual idiot. Read or ask next time.

  • Yea,

    Its call jazz.

The nature of Jazz is to play freely what you feel. It should not be a locked in style though it occurs to a degree because your feelings are yours and no one elses.

One thing I learned in my early years of music is that a musician feeds off of the presentation of another if he is listening. Jaco was a man of many feelings as evident that you could not peg his style. That's a good thing for Jaco. Jazz artist desire is to never stop growing, changing, and learning.

  • I want to see Tracy's face!

  • Does Jaco have bipolar disorder?

  • Bass solos should not be allowed by law.

  • @yazzman13 Oh, buzz off.

  • @yazzman13 listen to the actual portrait of tracy (whoever uploaded this, well, shouldn't have)

  • great groove of young Brazilian musicians / watch? v = sTMjT6YsyXk

  • Amazing.

  • did he trip @ 0:40?

  • Jaco Pastorius is a gangster nigger

He plays his bass fretless cause he's a gangster nigger

  • I can hear where victor wooten gets his influence from

  • this sucks ass. he acts like hes playing really good music

  • @krazy5000 he's a fucking bass jazz legend you ignorant retard.

  • @54NT14G0 idk why. this is terrible. hes just playing random sounds. do all of you people REALLY think this is good? or is it just a huge troll movement?
