  • @TheTsugnawmi2010 spoiler?

  • Google System Shock portable.

  • I love how people are calling this game a rip off of games that were created years after it...

  • How about STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl?

  • wait the hacker made shodan

i thought he just modified her or hacked her

  • @that1dude0092 Actually that is true. Spoony just got it wrong.

  • I remember playing the System Shock demo back in the day, from an old 1994 PC magazine disc. Our first PC was a 486 DX4/100 with 8MB RAM, CD-Rom, and SB16. Quite the upgrade from the old 8-bit computer we had. The game was a lot more interesting than Doom, which was all the Rage at the time.

  • It was an awesome touch that the last level of System Shock 2 took big parts from the first level of System Shock.

  • The techno zombie thing was taken from the old movie Virus (at the end, there's a giant spider robot thing, which is the ultimate 'scare'). Just saying.

  • Dead space doe not have the same story.

  • Dead Space was more heavily inspired by, if not a complete remake of a game called Project Firestart on the C64. Both published by EA.

Just a little factoid for you, Spoonster.

  • @ChaosStep Also Dead Space is also, very much like Event Horizon, which is a movie though, I read that this was a source of inspiration for Dead Space. Its been a while since i watched it but as far as i can recall there are some similarities. Great movie btw.

  • @MarNieCo Other movies dead space was inspired by:

    - Alien

    - Dawn of the Dead

    - Virus (which inspired system shock)

    ... yeah there's a lot out there.

  • @Uaxis 2001 a space odyssey

  • @MarNieCo

    dead space was inspired by:

    event horizon: the derelict ship

    the thing: the creatures

    and that game Project Firestart

  • I actually heard that Dead Space started out as System Shock 3 but however early in development for whatever reason they lost the SS licence and switched to a new intellectual property. I don't know if that's right at all, but it really wouldn't surprise me.

  • @apvideogame Wasn't that Bioshock?

  • @ginnoveffect No, Bioshock is a "Spirtual Successor" made by irrational games which was founded by several people from Look Glass Studios who made System Shock. As far as I know Bioshock was never an official sequel to System Shock. What I heard was that EA Redwood Shores (now Visceral Games) the guys who made Dead Space, that when they started development it was a System Shock game and then they lost the rights or whatever and it evolved into a new intellectual property. But I could be wrong.

  • Spiders...with laser beams attached to their heads....god help us.

  • now see you make it sound like the greatest game ever made but when i played it, i hated it

  • If she was talking like that I'd say b1tch we made u so STFU

  • For me the most scary part in these games is that throughout most of the games you are SHODAN's pawn and can do nothing about it.

  • I see the Back To the Future poster in the background behind you. Classic film.

  • Continued: In SS2, a piece of the space station was ejected just before SHODAN was destroyed, it floated through space until it crash landed on a planet called Tau Sete 5 where the life forms evolved, years later a faster that light ship the Von Braun makes its maiden voyage to this planet, on inspection of the planet they discover the life form and get infected, bringing it on board the Von Braun to infect the rest of the crew, continuing again...

  • Noah, when was the last time you played system shock 1 and 2, first off, the hacker was hired by a member of the Trioptium corporation to turn off SHODAN's ethnic protocols in order to access restricted files, but SHODAN becomes self aware and proclaims herself as a god, thus the act of killing everyone on the station, its true she did create a new form of life and was going to release it onto earth but the hacker destroyed her, gonna have to continue this...

  • Oh my God! People, System Shock 2 has the same plot as Portal 2!

  • @TheTsugnawmi2010 What? It's Bioshock that completely reuses System Shock 2's story.

  • @gilgamesh310 The evil super computer from the old game is rebooted and starts haunting the player, then a new computer is introduced who takes over the facility so the player and the evil computer have to team up to take it down. Portal 2. See?

  • @TheTsugnawmi2010 It's only similar in the very vaguest of ways. That doesn't mean the stories are similar.

  • @gilgamesh310 What do you mean"vaguest of ways". That IS the plot of Portal 2 unless I missed something. The plots are similar. They may not be as similar as this si to Bioshock but they're still similar.

  • @TheTsugnawmi2010 The plot to a lot of things can be very similar but it doesn't mean the stories are the same. Most action films can be summed up in the same way as each other but that dosn't mean they are completely alike.

  • @gilgamesh310 But I'm not talking about a lot of things I talking about Portal and SS. Their plots are the same, just change the location and time of SS and you do get Portal. And how does Bioshock reuse SS's plot. (Never played it & don't really plan to, just wondering)

  • @TheTsugnawmi2010 The whole nature of the pliot of Bioshock and SS 2's plot is identical. But as well as that the small scale stories are also identical. The only difference is the characters and locations. It's a disgrace that Bioshoc's story is celebrated when all it is is a rehash of SS 2's story.

  • @gilgamesh310 it shouldnt supprise you really, the guys who made system shock also made bio shock, they left after EA absorbed then raped the shit out of Orgin.

  • @OldEvilEye1280 I know the same guys made Bioshock, but it stil doesn't excuse them carrying over the story verbaim, especially not when it's Bioshock that gets all the acclaim for having it and everyone just forgets about System Shock 2, even though it is clearly the better game.

  • @TheTsugnawmi2010 no it doesn't!

  • @TheTsugnawmi2010 I believe it's the other way around.

  • You don't need DOSbox, google "System Shock portable"

  • LLLLLokAtYouHacker

  • Call me a coward but i couldnt finish system shock 2 =\

  • Oh, note regarding Portal: while GLaDOS and SHODAN both taunt the player throughout each respective game, the nature of their messages are very different. GLaDOS is quite a bit more light-hearted and character-centric. SHODAN, in contrast, is vicious and condescending; she makes the player quite aware that he is a speck and will be killed, then quickly forgotten. SHODAN's goals have to do with eradicating human life quickly; to my recollection, she does not toy with the player in the game.

  • Hey, great review. A quick correction: the hacker did not *create* SHODAN; he simply removed the ethical constraints from the preexistent AI in return for his freedom. Anyway, thanks for putting it together!

  • @444Tazer yeah, but it just doesnt sound right, if it was on portal, itd make more sense

  • This sounds a shitload like portal, minus a couple of details

  • @hioeo More like Portal sounds a lot like this.

  • @444Tazer portal doesn't have aliens and guns in it.

  • @iMoD190 Well obviously not. They aren't going to match exactly.

  • @hioeo No this game is 100% better than Portal, Portal is a boring overrated piece of crap.

  • @KITT171 thats not what everyone else in the fucking world says.

  • @hioeo Same ones that think Call of Dooty is a masterpiece? Its overrated trash.

  • Bioshock series is awesome, but in comparasion with System shock, well... they are not AS god as the original. SHODAN is really one of the creepiest (if not THE creepiest) villan I have ever faced in video games. Really, I shit my pants while playing the second one. Her voice... just... damn. Oh, one downside - the ending, for booth games.... Wow it sucks.

  • wheres youre SWAT 4 game

  • @asrob1001 He actually has the entire Let's Play on his website. He finished it in 2009 too.

  • Back to the Future poster=WIN

  • Game can be found from Home of Underdogs. I have played it again and again during these years and SHODAN still beats me too easily.

  • They already have a System Shock 3 and 4. They're called BioShock 1 and 2.

  • have you ever played bioshock

  • boom

  • you're not contracted to create an artificial intelligence you're contracted to remove the ethics constraints of the current existing artificial intelligence; SHODAN. u need to get your facts right thats a major error and you're speaking as an authority on the game. not cool.

  • The intro music and space station remind me of start control 2

  • dead space = resident evil...IN SPACE!

  • win win

  • Aaaaand we got to see that intro clip twice because?

  • transcribed audio works well with this video XD

  • ´´On a spaceship.``

So it's just like Dead Space.

    ´´New organic type life.``

So it's just like Dead Space.

´´I would even go as far as to call Dead Space a blatant ripoff.``

    How... DARE YOU!!!

  • @NintendoCentralFan12 What is?

  • @Gjkl345 The system Shock series.

  • @NintendoCentralFan12 ... but System Shock came first... you do know that? So technically it can never ripp-off Dead Space.

  • @Gjkl345 Other way around, he said that Dead Space was a blatant ripoff, which I, as a huge Dead Space fan, find a little insulting, though i know its partially true.

  • @NintendoCentralFan12 Meh. It kind of is. But so is Bioshock. System Shock was just the guys who did it first and over time has grown well being one of it's kind back in the day and the original progenitor.

  • @Gjkl345 I know, but i still like Dead Space, simply because of the OHMAHGAWDWUTTHEHELLISDAT??? atmosphere.

  • @NintendoCentralFan12 but that atmosphere is instantly killed by "awelli'lljustkillitwithmyimbaweapon...."

  • @xNauticus BLASPHEMY!!!

  • @NintendoCentralFan12 I like Deadspace alot but it really is nothing like the System Shock series..I don't see how it's a ripoff... also DeadSpace isn't in the least bit scary.

  • Chester1004 play Condenmed 2: Bloodshot

  • Chester1004 yeah, I want to have fun, and Dead Space 2 is much more fun tham the first one

  • In actuality, "The Hacker" in System Shock did not create SHODAN, but removed the already existing AI's ability to stop itself from predefined immoral actions. SHODAN as clever as "she" was, immediately exploited this new freedom to ensure her own survival and control.

    tl;dr

The guy didn't make SHODAN, just created the SHODAN that thinks it was a goddess.

  • @MoralDeQue they could have stopped her all along wth ctrl, alt, del but that was to smple

  • @MoralDeQue I know this is an old comment, but why did the hacker remove the already existing AI's ability to stop itself from predefined immoral actions? Isn't that kinda dumb?

  • @TearsOfWar1

Yeah it was pretty much. Edward Diego (bad guy) needed SHODAN to lose that part of her so he could erase some damning stuff that he had in the database showing his corruption, among other things. As she was, SHODAN wouldn't let him tamper with it. They didn't expect SHODAN would run with it and go crazy on them. The hacker did it in a deal to avoid prosecution for hacking their database in the first place.

  • Ok, Ok, Dead Space may have some elements from System Shock but fuck, you didn't understand the game, so don't go comparing

EA isn't all that bad, I mean, Dead Space is a great horror game

  • @danin900

Amnesia: The Dark Descent turns Dead Space and every other horror game out there into Barbie games.

  • @Chester1004 sure, well

I don't really give a fuck about it

seriously, why the fuck everybody hates new games so much?

  • @danin900

    Amnesia is from 2010.

I love Dead Space but the sequel wasnt scary as the first one.

  • @Chester1004 Dude,amnesia isnt scary you fucking pussy,what are you 13?Only 3 Enemie types,and all dark corners....what else is there.....Slime?Roflflflflflflfl,Get a sack

  • @9cloudersprofile

    /facepalm

If Amnesia is not scary for you then what the fuck is?!

Also there is no reason to insult me you asshole.

  • I really loved System Shock 2 and I still do.

AI was kinda screwy but those moans and security cameras still haunts my dreams.

  • SHODAN is adorable!

  • I noticed that he uses a (clip to body/clothing mic) when he vlogs but any other time, like a review he uses a mic that's off screen.

note: I got system shock 2 and I haven't played it but I can't wait.

  • Great review!

  • I personally liked the second one better, but both were great! It is a crime how underrated this series is, and that nobody is doing a remake and/or sequel. Even though since it is owned by EA, i think it would be better that way =/

  • @mrsir4 EA games, sucks with everything.

It's seriously a shame that, that piece of turd company owns the rights to System Shock now.

Even the creator of System Shock said "There won't be another system shock, under EA, all it would be just a linear shoot 'em up with a boss at the end of every stage."

  • its a shame..I could never play a pc game

  • system shock 2 FTW!!!

  • Techno Foetus should be a band

  • 4:44 Jello Biafra impression hehe

  • W00t D&D books in the background!

  • Is that Legacy realm of Terror on top of the bookcase!? LP that please....

  • here that mac lovers pc's the shit!

  • Who here has played KOTOR 2? Well SHODAN sounds like she's talking about some on the Telos station.

  • @FreakDaMIghet lol yeaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • in the beginning you said you were a PC gamer, what other games did you play?

  • It is very sad that System Shock 2 (and the original) are now owned by EA and they won't do SHIT to release them on Steam or something.

  • lol portal rips off system shock.its about a robot going crazy and killing everybody.but there are many MANY differences but it has the same formula

  • @gamerboy218 Oh, yeah... 'cause a robots rebelling against mankind is such a new and rarely heard of concept. (coughs 3000 movies/games using the same sort of plot)

  • they need to remake system shock

  • Look at you hacker

  • is there any like popout moments in the game?

  • Showing off the shelf, I see XD

  • Anyone who wants to play System Shock and not have to fiddle with DosBox, search for "System Shock Portable" - it's the game bundled with DosBox and usually runs out-of-the-box ;)

  • Was this done by the same people who did BioShock, you should do a review of this game if its for DoS dosbox can run it.

  • lol you made a lets play any way it scard me out too death

  • what about Phantamagoria that game was brutal and sick

  • i have no idea what he's talking about, but he's just so cute. i watched almost every video he had uploaded and I'm kinda amazed of him and of course I love his comments :D

  • and this guy is in NERD MODE

  • they NEED to make a system shock 3. I know Bioshock is supposed to be a successor of sorts(and that game is probably one of the greatest games of all time)but that series was just classic.

  • @purpleking15 No, not under EA;s juristiction they don't need to make new System Shock.

It'll just turn out to be a Shitfest Shock.

  • the thing with the computer voice kinda reminds me of portal ...

  • Is Diego wearing a Watchmen tee shirt?

  • @Quarantine53 Well, the smiley face shirt was popular before Watchmen, plus, the unnamed hacker you play as was wearing it, no Diego.

  • System Shock 2 = best FPS of that time. Occulted behind the success of Half-Life

  • dead space id say ripped event horizon more, practically every sound effect is from event horizon

  • back to the future! :) great movie

  • I really wish they would remake system shock 2 for the xbox live arcade :'(

  • They should remake System Shock 1!

The second one doesn't look so bad by today's standards while number 1 is a DOS game, we really need a damn remake.

  • Besides, there are plenty of mods for System Shock 2 that improve it's graphics. But none for the first one.

  • @TeenageEntertainment I think it would be cool if they remade both System Shocks into one, long, awesome game =)

  • @TeenageEntertainment

Problem is that code has to be reserve-engineered. I was checking code of The System Shock Hacking Project and they could not finish it.

Problem is that you have to rewrite pretty much everything. Then there is problem of artificial intelligence, game mechanic etc etc. Also, level design would be obsolete for today's standards.

Spriritual successor for system shock might be possible but it is really a full blown game-project; not just little polishing here and there.

  • @TeenageEntertainment : With Spoony's luck they'd probably change the game play into a turn based strategy game, and make SHODAN a rapper.

    BETRAAAAAAYYAAALLLL!!!!!!

  • @BillBonJovi They Already remade System Shock 2... Its called BIOSHOCK..

  • @karizma225scv kinda, it wasn't exactly the same and the gameplay is dumbed down for console gamers.

  • wow her face gave me a jump

  • Reminds me of The Internet from Sam and Max: Reality 2.0.

  • Eric Brosius gave these games a genius soundtrack, especially part two. Kelly Baily gave the Half-Life games a genius soundtrack to0. Sometimes I wonder if they studied under the tutelage of Tommy Tallarico.

  • @superlou1, actually, metroid prime corruption was a pretty good fps on the wii.

  • The plot for System Shock reminds me of one of my favorite Sci-fi horror movies of all time, Event Horizon. Anybody remember that one?

  • Yeah. One kick ass movie. It's a real gem. It's insane. Do I need to go on?

  • l..l...look at you hacker...

  • I had to sail the High Seas to find a copy of System Shock 1

  • If you want System Shock 1 and 2.

Go over to GOG . com / en / wanted /

    And vote for them.

SS1 is on third with 6493.

SS2 is on first with 9154.

  • there needs to be system shock 3 for the 360 ps3 and pc

  • @gyrosplater, no love for wii :-(

  • that's because the game would suck ass on the wii. Not only does the wii destroy every shooter it touches, but if the game isn't directly made by nintendo, you can almost guarantee it's gonna suck.

  • @superlou1s, well its not nintendos fault. a game is only as good as the developer makes it. the wii can do things like fps's just look at modern warfare reflex edition, it just that devlopers get lazy some times.

  • FPS on the wii is garbage, because the wii's controls are just that: gimmicky garbage. There is nothing fun about swinging a wii mote, its doesn't make games better, it just makes them harder to play, with worse controls. The wii is essentially just a gamecube with a jittery motion detector. I love nintendo, I really do, and I consider the nintendo DS the best handheld system. But the Wii is shit.

  • true

  • there is its called Bioshock

  • You can find System Shock on abandonia com.

The only bad thing about the game are the controls... I wish you could reconfigure the key binding.

  • Almost unplayable for someone used to modern controls :/

  • @Numenorean921 No, there is a mod that adds both standard WASD and mouselook controls.

  • iirc in the ttlg forums, someone released a program that reconfigures the movement and looking controls to modern standard fps keys (wasd,Not sure about mouse looking though.)

  • Hey, Citadel space station? Just like in Mass Effect

  • Incredible game. I'm making a mental note to come back and watch this after school. Can't wait.

  • Comment removed

  • woah that voice is so creepy, it makes me shiver..

  • Lol, SS2 works perfect without DOSBox, somehow... :D

  • It runs perfectly unless you have a HT/Dual core processor. There are workaround for that problem tough, and the game is playable in XP & Vista. SS1 runs perfectly in dosbox.

  • the SS2Tool.exe.I think the file is on filefront.

  • There needs to be a showdown between SHODAN vs GlaDOS

  • SHODAN would delete GLaDOS. She's far too resourceful. GLaDOS would just send SHODAN a barrage of flamemail.

  • @wesidantevowfow The cake is a lie bitch

  • LOLZ.

  • @wesidantevowfow

As great as SHODAN is, I prefer GLaDOS because she literally made Portal much more interesting, I mean, if she didn't talk. Portal would be boring.

Then again. I'm Portal Biased. =D

  • "Look at you hacker. A p-p-pathetic creature of meat and bone, panting and sweating as you run through my corridors... H-h-how can you challenge a perfect immortal machine..."

Freaks the shit out of me even to this day, also on the first floor I have cleared out the entire level, yet the security is still roughly 76%. I dont understand it.

  • Great taste in games Spoony. I agree with you.

  • I know it's been a while, but you actually got the premise wrong; not that I blame you, a lot of people did.

You didn't design SHODAN. What you do (and is a major part to the ending of the game plot) is disable it's ethical constraints, so that the corporate guy (Diego) that hired you off the books can funnel money out of Tri-Optimum into his own account.

Of course, THAT causes SHODAN to loose her mind. I don't blame you though, even Shock 2 says "The hacker that created her."

  • True, but once her ethical constraints were removed, SHODAN became something entirely different. So, after a fashion, the protagonist did create her.

  • System Shock came out at a time when I didn't have access to these kinds of games (prohibitively expensive, back in the day). Still, this game sounds awesome. Great commentary as usual, Spoony.

I'm assuming that your nick is from FFIV's Tellah? Interestingly, the translation is technically alright, but in the context it was delivered it sounds awesomely stupid. Silly Tellah.

    Peace.

  • Do an LP of this, Spoony!

  • yeah do it spoony

  • @sipasabayag He did on his live stream.

  • @JoonStudios True. I tuned in that day. :P

  • What did the hacker do and why there is a reply about his attack? This game looks like resident evil in computers rather than humans :). I kinda like the idea.

  • I wish I could see Spoony do a Lets Play of the System Shock series, or at least one of them.... Also, I wish I could get this game for free somewhere, if its even downloadable right now... =\

  • Guess what?

System Shock 1 is abandonware now. :)

You can get it at Abandonia and other similar abandonware sites.

  • wow thats sends shivers down my spine that monolog

  • i guess Gla_Dos from portals gets her choppy vocals from this game.

    the cake is a lie.
