Being a Karnatic flautist myself, I might have a better idea of the difficult nuances he employs in his technique, compared to other aging flautists.

But then again, you could be a flautist too, I dont know.

I agree with you, I hate to sound like an expert but I certainly think he's phenomenal, and an experienced flautist acquintance of mine thinks he is easily the best and he was a huge fan of T.R. Mahalingam (having listened to him at his prime live).

That being said the techniques that he has developed have definitely transcended what was being used and played before (ie double octave playing, rhythmic playing, changing fingering on the fly to extend the octave range). I don't think anyone before him has perfected these techniques to this level.
