I can't believe it took me this long to find this song! I have a ravenous (musical) taste for doo-wop, so I'm surprised that it's taken years for me to find out about a song this GOOD! This is a doo-wop classic in my book!
ah yeah, riviera ballroom,che-vous,wagner ballroom, and all the geator and ed hurst - eddie nixon dances through-out philly and south jersey. it's the rare local tunes of the day past that keeps guys like me rockin'.lived in many states since '69 and no radio stations out side of delaware valley area play 'our' tunes. used to dance our asses off to this and many others.thanks for sharing
@hotsauce4495 ditto everything you said, when you move away from the Phila/S Jersey area, no one has ever heard this music or can even relate to the good old days of our music and our dances..thanks Jerry Blavat, HyLit, Georgie Woods, Butterball etc
I remember being there that saturday afternoon when ed hurst introduced the cobras 4 guys came out on that stage and did they stopped everyone in their tracks when the thin fellow chanted dumdumdumdudmudm
It was the Fall of 1965 at the St Johns dance in Upper Darby when I fell in love with a true blonde while watching her dance to this. She remains my one true love, but by the summer of 1967 I blew it, and she said goodbye. It's probably all good tho' because I think she turned into a baby orca.
From Billy Taylor's obituary in the Philadelphia Inquirer (8-10-09):
"In 1964, Billy was with the Cobras, which released a top-selling record, "La La."
"It had that stomp beat all the local dancers were searching for," Bosco said, "and Taylor shrieked the lead in a voice so high it sounded as if he had just escaped from a madhouse."
The record sold well on the East Coast and is still played at dances. The group sang it live at "Summertime at the Steel Pier," which was broadcast on TV".

This used to be playing at all of our dances in Philly. It brings back the fantastic mood we'd be in at the time. Glory days!

Don K. Reed used to play the heck out of this on his "Doo Wop Shop" WCBS-FM broadcasts. Always wondered who was doing that high lead.

I like The Four Knights version a little bit better, but they're both good.
