Many years ago, I captured this song on cassette, probably off of public radio. I've tried to play and sing it, but just don't have the pure vocals enough to do it justice. I hadn't really thought about it for years, and stumbled upon this little treasure. I feel like I just spent a little time hanging out with Sara in the living room. What a wonderful, warm, and personal oral history and presentation of this precious song.

@FrankAndNadine Same thing here, I had this on cassette years ago, always had the tune in the back of my mind as years passed but couldn't remember the artist or song name, just tonight it really bewildered me enough to go digging through old cassettes...I found the homemade tape with info intact - went straight to youtube and there it was after all those years of wondering, what a beautiful song and a beautiful story to go with it.

Thank you for posting.... I heard this song about 18 years ago one night late on the radio... I picked up my guitar and figured a little bit of it out..... Song ended and I never heard it again.... Until now. Thanks so much. I have never forgotten it

I've figured out a little of it. I'll try to post it with an explanation / tab. It's basically fingerpicking a "C" chord with a capo on the 6th frett. Lots of hammer ons and pull offs. Then "Am" and a "Dm" .... I think... I gota play it.

I discovered this song during my college radio show. I played it for a girl I was just starting to see, who was in the studio with me. Two weeks later she was dead. But we had an absolutely perfect night, with this song as the centerpiece.

I first saw Sara on "Austin City Limits" and she charmed the audience right into tears and big grins, all at the same time, such a little heartbreaker and she looks younger now than then! "Simply" is the almost perfect love song, every word used perfectly, and the so simple phrase "I am your lover and you are my friend" captures the whole sadness of unrequited love, doesn't it?  We all have that one person...oh well. To have her play among your friends, what a gift, treasure that moment! :-)

Yeah that's right! Until I read the description I thought she wrote this song for Phil and then brought it out again when he got married. Could you imagine how that plot would have gone down? LOL XD
