Initially Kathak was performed in Temples and most of the subjects were from Hindu mythology. later on during Mughal period it was add with lots of contant which were not religious but for entertainment. now a days Kathak is performed in both styles, depends on the nature of the performance. Any way it is closely relatated with Hindusm.
Hi ashwani21 I have learnt kathak for 3 years and I just love this dance. But I am in Calgary and could not find any kathak teacher. Can I have a full length video on web or a DVD in english or hindi as i like the way he is teaching.

For that you must understand Indian Philosophy. Indian music and dance is not only for entertainment. It was a method of meditating and used for devotional purpose. If you understand in all religion prayer processes is performed by man. Priest and story teller in temples were man and so do they sing and show stories with drama and dance.
Although later on Indian classical dance gone though under many changes and dance was used for attract kings and rich people then female dancer was preferred more. If you see in all oblast Indian dance most prestigious place is dominated by male dancers and teachers.
