Many ppl really got the meaning of Singapura wrong! Firstly, Singa pura like we all know, could simply mean Lion(singa) City(pura), but this phrase was actually given by a hindu prince frm mainland Java(bear in mind tht originally, majority malay descended frm polytheists especially Hindu religion b4 Islam set its roots in this archipelago). Indonesia used to be so diverse in culture and races including its many languages tht transcends all sections of faith n groups of community....

We used to be ppl of many cultures, races and language in this archipelago and united as malays. Singapura was named by a Hindu prince and it could either mean Lion city or could mean Singgah Pura, a stopover city. Lions, dragons etc, has been an important role in Hindu n Buddhist religion.... so i bet this island could have been named based on religious grounds.
