I wish teens would watch movies like this more, cause they teach a lot, and first of all to respect our enemies.. Sadly such a great actors as Takeshi Kitano, Tom Conti and Sakamoto Ryuichi are getting old :(
I have forgotten the number of times I have cried like a baby at the end of this film, I am 37 now and it still gets me every time, and the music is astonishing, Ryuchi Sakamoto is a genius.
I have watched this movie as a teen, and this final scene I will never forget. It shows the stupidity of war. Ending this movie with this scene and Ryuchi Sakamoto's musicpiece is just brilliant.
Every soldier is also a human and every human has feelings. In the end, everything is forgiven and no hard feelings will linger. This movie taught me humility and nothing will be forever.
The prisoner seems to be glanzing out of what must have once been a old strategic gun vantage point, before the cell door moves and opens. And the dialog opens.... Priceless.....
I watched this film when it 1st came out & here i am still watching it on dvd.As a former royal marine commando of 27 years this film has always made me think why do we become soldiers.this film is the best war film ever & truly makes you think about life & how we are to others in the field of conflict.I admit that the ending always makes me sad & respect combatants in our line of conflict just a pity that many people havnt seen it or understand the meaning of this film. The music is 1st class
Hi Ziggy'! Sorry i couldn't get back to you earlier but I'm glad to have some 'positive feedback'! If you can imagine the 'fusion' or Sakamoto's score with particular scenes in the movie you'll appreciate his 'score-writing' talent- and ALL of that at the age of 30! if you look up the 'wikipedia blog' you may like to get his other instrumental scores from the groups he was in. AND it's ABOUT TIME this guy did make another movie score! Regards.
I'll try and put as much in as I can here!Ryuichi Sakamoto- one of the world's most underrated talents- not only in his sublime musical prowess, but also acting ability- 'MERRY CHRISTMAS, MR LAWRENCE' [1982- starring a magnificent performance by the inimitable David Bowie [coming 'off the back' of a near fatal heroin addiction] is one of the most underrated war depictions ever made! It should have garnered an 'Oscar' for Bowie, original score and cinematography- a hauntingly beautiful movie!
@meritcross You said it!!! I'm a big Bowie-"fan" and since I saw that movie I'm avid for Sakamoto's music - in fact, I started to play piano, because I wanted to hear this song, whenever i want to ;)

When you think about it, war is what shaped everyone's mind and mentality and vision of the other countries. All the prejudice and the hatred and also all the subtle things people think about other countries...it all comes from war. People can smile to each other but their difference is most often too much an obstacle to really respect each other. Anyway...I wish people really respected each other in real life and learned to not just accept, but love the difference found in the other.
I wish teens would watch movies like this more, cause they teach a lot, and first of all to respect our enemies.. Sadly such a great actors as Takeshi Kitano, Tom Conti and Sakamoto Ryuichi are getting old :(

ei0906 1 year ago

shibao12 11 months ago 8

Why must it be such a great movie?!
Hara helps out Lawrence and Celliers on Christmas, but sadly, Lawrence can't help out Hara on Christmas.
Sadly, the gift that can't keep on giving. :(
