  • I watched losses and I noticed the really good punch and shooting sound effects. Where do you get them?

  • Where do you find sound effects and where i can find them?

  • I need advice, I cannot film from multiple angles as I only have one camera (Canon EOS 550D) would you suggest I film from different angles multiple times?

  • @goldenguy12345 Yes, that's what he did too. Well i think because i doubt he had more than one red epic.

  • That fight scene was so brilliant that with or without the grunts it sounded and looked good. Great job guys.

  • Dear Ryan,

    Can you be a Lamp?

    Teehee.

hehehe. Just kiddin love ure vids Bro :D..

  • Ryan, I love you so I'm telling you this for your own good. Iron your shirt.

  • What Slate App was that you used on the iPad?

  • Well, im not much of a talker, so im gonna skip right to it. Any tips for making a zombie apocalypse movie? Thanks.

  • Im in love with this channel

  • just thought i'd bring the likes up to 830 cause i'm nice like that

  • 4:25 SKIP SHIT BUTTON

  • just freakin go to thepiratebay and download anything you want for free

  • a good short movie with good effects and fight scences is the cardboard warfare series

  • If you want to make a fight scene based on real fighting techniques but still want the tough guy bare knuckle brawl look check out a fighting style developed by the Israeli Counter Terrorists (Al Mossad) called Krav Maga. For the tough guy/realistic mixed with big hollywood theatrics look at HapKiDo

  • I hate shaky cam

  • use an ipad to start shots??????wow

  • hey ryan, i was wondering if you could post a video showing us how to make a LOW budget fight scene, with moves, as we have only 1 camera. But it is 1080p so is good, anyway we need many fight scenes for our new james bond series coming early 2012(James Bond-Son). Please can you make the video.---Olly from DuffleyProductions

  • @JamesBondSonEpisodes Iv filmed a few fight scenes with camera. But no as good as filmriots. But hopefully this will help.

-Dont you crap sound for punches. Get a strong and sharp sound effect not the sound of pensioner farting which I see regularly.

-Usually full body shots in fights look awful. Unless you are establishing a movement.

-Make sure blows like his head swinging back after being hit is timer perfectly. If its out of sync it will quickly kill the scene.

  • OMG ... mmmmmmmmmmm

  • Shaky cam's not even a "style." It's a deficiency in steadiness. Nothing more.

  • Dear Ryan, What about shooting a hand to hand combat scene for a WWII video? Obviously training and techniques have advanced over time... but would modern day moves look out of place or would it even matter?

  • OH MY GOD Ryan your wrincled shirts are making me twich!!

  • I DO Teakwondo SO DO I HAVE too follow what you say.!!!!

  • Hey guys I am a high school student who is into filmmaking and I was wondering if there was a cheap like $200 type cheap camera. Please please let me know

  • Comment removed

  • I'm training to be a fight choreographer and one thing to keep in mind and I've found a lot of good comes from talking to local Martial Arts studios and MMA gyms they're ALWAYS looking for advertising and want to show off their students and give them more experience. Also in the business they really do organize the choreography by sections like you but they're called "phrases" and each fight should tell a story whithin the story one person wins one phrase the other the next and so on.

  • @kingofkards91 And believe it or not finding dancers can be to your advantage they're used to fancy footwork and have extraordinary control of their bodies with excellent reflexes.

  • dear rayan,

i am just a kid and i saw your short film losses it was realllyy awwwwsoommmeeeeeeeee love it sooo much and it was realy like holloywod movie i love it honestly and i became addited to u and film riot could you please teach me how did josh threw the gun on the villans fight and when he stabbed using a stick it really looked realy please teach me ............

  • What type of camera did you use to film this awsome flick?.

  • @JD3828 they used the red epic witch they had for limited time

  • @JD3828 they used the EPIC RED

  • Awesome... nice yaa..

  • Skip ad - 4:25

  • this was one of the most advanced and insightful filmriots ever. Good job!

  • i love their intro!

  • dear ryan, I can sadly see you have not done anything on superheroes. Indymogul, your rival, has done 3 videos on superheros. You should do one on a superhero costume, and one on a superhero's powers.

  • ur shirt is wrinkled

  • Hey, love you guys! CHECK OUT MGNFILMS!

  • Nice video, but how did you break the stick on his back?? lol I would assume that may hurt

  • Iron your shirt Ryan!!

  • Woot! Totally wish i watched this before I uploaded my short film... check it out on my channel! 2 more acts to come then more films soon!

  • I AM HONOURED! To have my video exepted as a video response! I LOVE YOU RYAN AND JOSH AND BRUNO AND EVERYONE ELSE AT FILM RIOT!

  • Ryan, you should do another video on fight scenes, but more oriented towards fight scenes that would be in Zack Snyder films

  • CHECK OUT MGNFILMS!

  • Welcome to film riot, the show that takes the Mystery out for the effects and techniques that go into some of your favourite hollywood films :D Love it

  • and i loved it too.

  • I love Emily, they should make a short film with her as the main character..

  • @nathan110063 as a villain. a misunderstood villain.

  • 4:50 Emily!

  • 3 for HAMMER !

  • RYAN YOU NEEEEEED TO IRON YOUR SHIRTS!!! ;)

  • dear Ryan,

i was wondering if you do the same fight segments 3 times but each time, different angles with the camera. because the fight scene flows together so well. and if you do or don't, do you think it's an effective technique?

    sincerely, comedyallianz

  • @ComedyAllianz Yes, that would be a smart choice if its okay with your actors. This is called Coverage so then in Post you have a ton of footage to chose from and it would be really useful. If its a small move that you feel unimportant just master coverage is probably alright but its up to you as the director.

  • @Hatecradle thankyou very much.

  • @ComedyAllianz I'm not ryan but it works very well and looks good

  • @ComedyAllianz I know I'm not Ryan, nor do I know how he filmed it, but you usualy do want to get several shots of each segement. This helps to cover up any imperfections in the way it was filmed.

  • @ComedyAllianz yes that is a very good technique, some actually film there fight once with many cameras at different angles, but people like me who dont have money or lots of cameras film it many times in a row with different angles.

  • @ComedyAllianz Most professionals have multiple cameras for multiple angles, but in the case in which one is low on budget or does not have many cameras, YES, it is proper to repeat the same action segment multiple times to get the angles you need. =)

  • Did you guys make your own sounds effects. clothes rustling/ punches etc. or did you get them from a programme?

  • awesome a ipap used as a clapper! ( 4:34 )

  • Check out MGNFilms for some great films and shorts! We have a feature coming out on October 1st, check out our channel for the trailer! Please comment, rate and subscribe!

  • you need to learn how to iron a t-shirt. lol

  • I like how you used the orange-blue contrast on the video thumbnail.

  • whos that muscled guy with the grey shirt

  • Lame

  • do you know what this show needs? If you said more emily you would have been right

  • at 04:34 what app did u use on the ipad

please i really need that app!!!

  • For sound effects, buy Video Copilot's Designer Sound FX.

For muzzle Flashes, buy Video Copilot's Action Essentials 1 in SD.

If you do not want to buy them, google your sound effects or muzzle flashes. There's many sites that do that. Hope I helped.

  • That didn't tell much about how to choreograph it

  • "Settle Nicholas" xD

  • Love the show, Come check out MGNFilms the trailer to a great action movie we've been making all summer!

  • I need those arm things, me and my friend tried to do a fight scene in one shot and we had to redo it like 20 times and even though we weren't hitting hard after a while it hurt! xD

  • I went to school with Nic Daire :D

  • @filmriot what's the name of the clapboard app you used?!

  • 10:28 Stark's first words!

  • Josh is hot -3

  • i can tell stark is modelling some of the shirts lol

  • @filmriot what's the name of the clapboard app you had?

  • so...much...BUFFERING!!!!!!!

  • I challenge you guys to do a first person shooter, but shoot the footage first, then green screen the hands and gun in.

  • I have a whole new respect for Josh as an actor. There is no way I could pull off a fight scene.

  • I have to say all the hit sound effects sounded the same...

  • SOUND EFFECTS: Search for Action Audio Pro on Google from vfxlobby, the majority of gun and fighting sound effects are from there.

  • Just wondering where you guys got those great sound effects or how you made them!

  • Your shirts wrinkled...

  • dude iron your damn shirt

  • I don't agree with the shaky cam, i hate it personally. Even when its shoot outs I think its pointless. If you look at Hard Boiled, The Killer, and A Better Tomorrow from John Woo or Breaking News by Johnnie To and you will see you don't need to shake the camera.

A lot of FreddieW's stuff shows you don't have to shake the camera also like his Time Crisis vid. Its a technique people love or hate but I personally hate it

  • me and my friend are always scaring the sheets out of our teaters in recess by fake fighting

  • U may have covered this before but many of my scripts sound corny and i need to make a decent for college. I was wondering if you could share some advice about screenplays! Cheers!

  • ahahaha!!! 5:41 funny!

    Intruder! :))

    awesome tutorial! :D

now I can make my fight scenes better...

"I only copy some fight scenes in Resident Evil Afterlife and some other games and films in my not so good short film project for my high school project"

with this, I can do better, and safer :D

In my last film, I got cuts and bruises, body pain.. all the bad stuff.

anyways, thanks Filmriot and to Ryan Connolly, also to Josh (YOUR AWESOME)

    - Gab

  • i tought it was a little bit to shaky, but for the rest it was good

  • lol maybe iron that shirt, just a thought

  • hey they got to beat up Shaun white, cool

  • Personally im one who doesnt like the shaky fight scenes. When Mal fights the operative in the end of serenity is probably my favorite fight scene in a movie

  • fist fight... lol

  • Sound is so crisp - what's different? Personally I would have liked to see Josh get killed in the end as a twist.

  • ryan! did you use a different mic for this episode?

  • Wow iPad clap

  • OMG what episode had that ad it looks hilarious

  • Comment removed

  • Make a musical Ryan!

  • Ok. You've got a house and a wife and a brother and sister and what else...where do you keep all your video stuff????? Magic hat? :)

  • He just HAPPENS to be friends with a MMA fighter... oh yeah, we all have friends who are.... hahahaha Ryan is like mafia... he knows someone for everything...

  • josh as an addition to the second expendables ? xD

  • you look like Dr. House lol... cool!

  • You guys clearly work hard on filmriot, keep up the great work,by the way who can i use some of the effects used in xmen first class, make josh fly or somethin

  • I liked Losses for the most part, but it was a bit too shaky at some parts.

  • nice video but i have a question what other program or software can i use besides after effects or hitfilm i really want to do some cool effects but i cant

    do you have any suggestions

  • Where did you guys get the sound effects????

  • @makesmewanttolaugh did you watch the end of the video? SFX episodes comes after a few weeks ;)

  • @makesmewanttolaugh They've already done an episode on that, they just make the sound effects themselves basically.

  • @makesmewanttolaugh I think they made them themselves... they had an episode on "create your own fight sound effects" or something like that a while back

  • @nFnBjR I looked at the tutorial, but it doesn't sound like the ones they used in this film at all

  • @makesmewanttolaugh If you guy can share them, would be the most awesomest give-away ever and forever.

  • @makesmewanttolaugh If you guy can share them, would be the most awesomest give-away ever and forever.

  • Check out the book, "Fight Choreography: The Art of Non-Verbal Dialogue" by John Kreng. It's an absolutely essential instructional book on creating an exciting and story driven fight scene.

  • I think the shaking camera was great on this fight but there was the part where Josh was running through the hall after he came up behind the one guy and I think it was a little too shaky, but I still really loved it!

  • sooo... hows about a good sexy scene o_0

  • Hey ryan, for the last couple of months you've been talking about 2K, 4K and 5K. What the eff are you on about? Could you explain please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks

  • @TheBellConspiracy He is talking about Cinema camera resolutions. 2K is 2048*1xxx pixels (the numbers represented by the x's depend on aspect ration) and is slightly larger than 1080P (1920*1080) for about 2 megapixels of resolution. 4K is 4096*2xxx pixels, for about 8 megapixels of resolution, or 4 times more than 2K. This is approximately equal to 35mm film. 5k is aproximately 5000*25xx pixels or about 12.5 megapixels. For more info checkout RED digital cinematography on wikipedia.

  • Haha at 5:00 Josh is clapping with the gun

  • FilmRiot has a cool episode on Foley here: /watch?v=RKq911kcqLY

  • " i dont mean it sexy..." everybody slowly leaves...

  • Actually, that was the only problem i had with Losses. The action took up like 90% of the movie, and the shayness of the camera seemed to be a bit overwhelming. I dunno. Your definitely a better director than i am, but i think i would have eased up on the shakyness a bit.

  • I was looking around and posting questions and the response about the shaky cam effect for fighting is really despised like really deeply even by a few good fighting choreographers but I guess it's all a matter of opinion - if you check out spidermexicans youtube page he probably has some of the best fight choreographed scenes ive ever seen on youtube

  • great stuff man... thank you and keep it up!! god damn it Ryan, thanks to you i now walk around random saying DOMAAAAAAIIIIIIIIN......Dot.....com to people for absolutely no reason.

  • 2:19 is SUPPPPPER AWESOME.

  • REALLY COOL!

  • good tips and i loved Losses. but your shirt is really wrinkled.

  • I am so jealous of your Super 8 display, it isn't even remotely funny.

  • losses should of had emily as the main character. not josh.

  • @CBBP47 Then it wouldn't have been entertaining because Emily would have no trouble at all fighting all of the bad guys, she would probably just kill them all with one bullet, including Todd Bruno's character XD

  • @CBBP47 Are you stupid?

  • @CBBP47 Shoulda had Emily in it, but I'm not so sure about having her as the main character... Josh seems like a better fit for that. :P

  • Maybe iron your top next time :)

  • To be honest I think you should have weighted your camera and used stable lenses. Sorry I have no idea what they are called though, I hope you do.

  • Your shirts not ironed properly... Tut tut tut!

  • Great stuff as always! Is that an ipad you're using to replace a traditional clap board at 4:35? If so, what's the app and tell us how much you like it.

  • 04:58 Bruno looks soooooo camp.

  • I love you, Ryan Connolly!!! :-D --- Sent From filmriot's AppRats (Facebook App)!

  • hi can you please make a vid on tracking what program the sounds muzzle and blood

  • @ebaadbawany786 all 3 have been covered before in old film riot episodes

  • No top comment? Ok here's my chance...so what's up with that airplane food?

  • you audio sounds better than normal, you do sumtin different? Thanks Chris

  • sorry but i have to speak my mind about the shaky cam. you used it to perfection during the fight scenes, but the close ups while you're actors were in that room in the beginning, it just wasn't fitting. that is and stays just my opinion.

  • I like the shaky camera effect for this kind of stuff too, but I think you may have overdone it in the short. Not by doing it to much as length of time, but to much of a distance travel... Made it seem too out of control. You also did this on the fast car episode. May just be me, but it takes from the effect if it's to much.

  • Great episode!! I'm realy happy tour listening to your audience XD and try as much as you can to help them. I've learned a lot thanks to you!

  • Comment removed

  • Came out a week after I filmed my fight scene. Whatever. Great episode.

  • Thank You!!! U D Best...

  • Footage at the end, Ryan is clearly adjusting himself in the background.

Heh... it's cool, we all have that problem at some point ;)

  • Losses almost has 100,000 views! I think that is technically semi-viral. :)

  • Did Nick have a big part in the fight choreography? My thought is: how much does real fight training relate to film fighting?

  • @Greyknight53 Real fight training is very helpful, mostly for the body control it provides and the fitness level it brings, for choreography it's useful, but you have to be careful not getting caught up in making it "realistic". Things look different through a camera than in real life and you need to change things to make it work, basic things like eyeline sometimes feel very silly when performing, but in the camera look perfect, it's the same with fight moves
