  • There is an important message that is missed these days.Vietnam had a major influence on what was being told to us in music during this time.Over 50,000 american lives lost. All music was following common ground to get through to the people. It helped end the conflict in south east asia. For now, there is nothing bringing us together so music has head off into different directions.Things could change at the drop of a hat,you just never know.

  • Remembering when music did not suck. This is what life is about, smooth harmonies and a great beat!

My dad taught me well that without early R&B , we would not have what we have today!

  • one of the greatest tunes, written by one of the greatest bands ever !! this song stands the test of time !!!

  • And the band played on, Thumbs UP^^^^^

  • They speaking about things that are happening in these days and time......

  • i love this now this is pure black music now they have dis crap called rap

  • Social commentary at its best! My 9v transistor radio with earphone was kickin. A lot of this applies to now.!!

  • The good old days when blacks produced good music! Now they have rap...

  • @jacobleb420 Rap has nothing to do with the lack of quality of today's music. There are very good rappers out there as there is very bad music period that's being played today. Black, white etc.

  • @epics7

If rap doesn't have anything to do with it then why are most black musicians rappers then? Why aren't there any black musicians coming out with good music like in the 60's and 70's. Back then their message was positive and the music good, now it's just crappy synthesized music and moronic lyrics about killing rivals and fucking ho's! Oh and let's not forget the all so important bling bling! A very long way from what it used to be! Whites are not immune either, Justin Bieber...

  • @jacobleb420 You always call it the way it is ?

  • @anotherbluesguy

Of course I do! Is there any other way?

  • @jacobleb420 When no less an authority than Don Cornelius stepped away from the music scene because he felt "rap" was not the direction "black" music should be going.

The MAN that created the first major outlet for "black" music was so dissatisfied with the lack of integrity in rap "music" he quit the biz ?

    That says it all.

Rap has everything to do with the lack of integrity in music today.

Nobody plays a musical instrument anymore...That would take time and effort !

  • @anotherbluesguy

I did not know that about don quitting because of rap. I completely agree with your statement.

  • @anotherbluesguy

have you heard of devin the dude? or the roots? or the hundreds of other rappers that play instruments and are very skilled at them? He didn't create the first major outlet for blacks, that was blues 40 years before this. Your going to tell the late Gil Scot Heron that when he created rhythmic american poetry that he was doing something wrong?

  • @eltimo556 Much like Don,I dont listen to rap either.Soul Train on television was certainly the first regular national exposure to "black" music. Early Radio was regional and blues record albums were catagorised as "race" music and were not released nationally by "record stores". Mr. Heron and rhythmic poetry is not yelling into a "mike" about killing ,bangin bitches, gettin high and how much "bling" you gots.Rap is certainly at fault for the lack of integrity in todays music.

  • @eltimo556 Cont: I actually find it degrading to the legacy of Gil Scot Heron to even talk about Rappers in the same sentence.Due to the fact that what Gil had to say really, really meant something.

  • Detroit THE HOME OF ROCK AND ROLL

  • @KeepRockin55 May not be the birthplace, but it is the HOME of rock and roll. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should be in Detroit, not a doubt in my mind.

  • @KeepRockin55 What's funny is that I've heard people argue that Motown isn't rock'n'roll music - and it seems like quite a few people buy into that.

  • why is this soo good?

  • Hey, many of the problems then are the same now. no bs

  • I have my eighth grade graduation "memories book" and this is in my list as my favorite song! fantastic.

  • and and and.. they are still releasing new Beatles records (it's a gas), although these are remasters of course

  • A very nice song. Thank you.

  • One of the best of the many great Temptations songs.

  • In the words of the late Bill Hicks, "When music had BALLS".

  • Wow, a sick song! Now I remmebered, it was in the season 4 trailer of "The Wire"!

  • I love this song

  • That's what the world is today!!

+1, but I prefer the Undisputed Truth's version

  • The more things change....the more they stay the same

  • god i hate when people act like any black person singing staccato or talking over music is "rapping" this isnt rap, its just funky as buttcrack

  • wow, this is trippy as hell!

  • "TEMPTATIONS" FOREVER !!!!!

  • This song is from 1970 and now in the year 2011 the world still hasn't changed much from what they are singing about.

  • Fucking CLASSIC.

This song BANGS like few do. Such powerful expression, that you rarely hear in music today.

  • seriously, that saw the future in this song, cause aint nothing change

  • ...and the only safe place to live is a Indian Reservation......

  • Features Melvin Franklin's line. '...and the band played on.' God bless! RIP, Paul Williams, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, and, of course, Melvin. Temptaitons FOREVER!

  • @Suzy1739 - LOL - me, too. I had this 45.

(For those of you too young to know what a 45 is, it's a record that's spun at 45 rpm and featuring one song on each side)

The truth in this song still speaks to us today.

  • Cool !......I don't even remember this video when it came out, but, I never knew the Funk Bros. either UNTIL " standing in the shadows of Motown " (a video get together of the Funk Brothers ).......INCREDIBLE.....especially them with Joan Osborne doing "What becomes of the Broken Hearted " !!!.....AMAZING

  • Love you Suzy1739. I wouldn't trade a moment of my life experiences since then, even though the were horrendous !!!!

  • Love this song..........only bad thing..is I remember when it came out!!!!

  • Earliest of Rap known!!!

  • @theqman1956 You obviously haven't heard Say Man by Bo Diddley then... : )

  • @theqman1956 dude, this is soul.

  • This song sounds way better if you are driving in a car with an old radio and bad.. lets say vintage style radio reception :o) heard it today and it had more groooove in a way

  • The Funk Brothers lay it down!!!!

  • It is amazing how GREAT this song sounds in 2010--the lyrics are appropriate and the production of the song stills sounds fresh and modern. This is still a kick-ass song!!!

  • Also ~ this song has one of the best intros

  • @SuperNevile Ditto. The fusion of soul and psychedelic sound is tops.

  • Always loved this song ~ great lyrics ~ so much in them! Great Lines ~ "The only safe place to live is on an Indian reservation" "Hippies moving to the hills" "And the band played on"~ is this a reference to the band on the Titanic?

  • @SuperNevile Indian reservations now have gang issues, and the hills are being taken over by the yuppies.
