I think most part is from chengdu. I come from there. You can see the old Chengdu city wall, jinjiang river, Dujiangyan dam, the scene is familiar to my parents. Beside, the sound is surely not the original one.
Hi Michael, I suggest you checking Hong Kong Map by browsing centaline map at hk.centamap.com. Its map is more clearly to understand the location what I mentioned.
to be continued.. because british said the shape of mountain top looked like a castle. The English name is still being used as a formal name by nowadays Hong Kong SAR. I am now living in Tuen Mun, near the Castle Peak and its mountain outlook is still the same as what was the old footage taken.
@albertsamtam Thanks for your info. I'll await other viewers opinions. I'm not aware that 9.39 was taken in Hong Kong. In fact the footage was taken in 'Western China' Would that include Hong Kong?
@MichaelRogge Hong Kong should be in Southern China, belongs to Kwangtung(Guangdong) Province. Chengdu is in Southwest China. I have found that some places were really taken in old Mainland China and some were taken in old Hong Kong. The view of Castle Peak was taken by the person who at that time actually stood in Yuen Long plain, Hong Kong to take the whole view. You can understand more the location by checking the Hong Kong Map , enjoy it. Cheers!
@MichaelRogge Hi ,chengdu is my hometown, and the panda's hometown.Actually, this video is true. There is a river named Min River which is the source of the Yangtze River(Long River) in the video. So the Chengdu city is west of HK.In detail Chengdu is midwestern, but HK is eastern.
Hi Michael, thank you very much for posting this old footage, this is nice and great. I was born in Hong Kong, I think this movie is the combination of various old footages of mainland China, especially at 9:39, the view was taken in Tuen Mun(屯門), Hong Kong. You can see a high mountain on the left, that mountain we call "Castle Peak"(Tsing Shan青山).The English name of its mountain was named by British since 1898 when British goverment rented the "New Territorries" from Ching Dynasty of China
(1) I doubt it's Chengdu at least for some part of it. At 0:36 you can see a palm tree in front of a temple, and at 4:31 you can hear clearly the woman's word "which one would you like?" which sounds to my ear like Cantonese accent.
(2) Michael, you should try uploading these great great video clips to youku.com to benefit the genuine Chinese people living in Mainland China who usually have no access to Youtube as it's blocked there.
@ralphzwang . Well, that Cantonese accent is due to the fact that no original sounds were recorded and I had to add one of a Cantonese source. As to Youku I have tried in vain to upload clips on Chinese clip sides, but they are all in Chinese which I do not understand.
@MichaelRogge Michael, the family eating together at 4.33 are speaking Cantonese. I am from Hong Kong. And I have to thank you for your old films. They are very precious and let us know & see the old Hong Kong, (also other asian countries)
@MichaelRogge hi Mike, you mean the background music and sound is just added by yourself? so it's just a silent movie! we can't be clear if this is Chengdu or other city, cuz there's no typical thing in it
@CaeserTseng Hi ,chengdu is my hometown, and the panda's hometown.Actually, this video is true. There is a river named Min River which is the source of the Yangtze River(Long River) in the video.
off course China has changed quite a lot and I believe the movie was taken in Canton area with the dialoge in the movie. Sir, one thing to ask. Have you ever take the cab with a man tolling at the front. There are quite a lot at the Star Ferry pier when I was a kid. Anyway thanks again sir.
It might be Chengdu. If you see at the end, they show a mountain rage, very similar to the area around Chengdu. But it could also be Kunming... Hard to tell. What's clear that China is long gone...
this place looks so peaceful, it should be at WW2 during that time (1937-1945) in china. if this is Chengdu then this might be the footage that promote the city. When World War II hit China, the city rapidly developed into a cultural and industrial hub. The Nationalist government fled the Japanese and located in Sichuan province, attracting countless workers, traders, and businessmen to the city.
From the Youtube Suggestions besides your video, there is a video call "People of Western China" uploaded by felixlamour. It said that the place is called Chengdu.
@hkpegasus01 I didn't know. Anyhow mine is edited, of better quality and with a different soundtrack. So I do hope that it still serves a purpose. In general I check first if a clip exists based on the same obsolete film.
thanks for this, i will show this to my grand father. he is 92 now. He will be happy to see this, i am sure :)

@CaeserTseng Indeed most of prewar documentaries were without live sound nor exact information on its precise location, so I added it
