This is the band that defined punk rock for me. "I want to beat you up at the end of ...(this song)" What great tension to make you listen to a song. The song is actually quite dark lyrically and is surprisingly a well written and complete composition. When the chorus begins you can hear the template for decades of pop/punk songs for the first time here. "What's the use if you don't want it, what's the use if you won't take it, sixteen years of a sixteen year life" Yikes.
I want to beat you up at the end of....AHHHHHHHHhhhhooohhhh.....Squirrell Bait did Hammer hard circa 1983-1987 Louisville, KY.....so good when I was a kid in Louisville....They wenr on some members formed..."Slint"...."Big Wheel, Bitch Magnet, Bastro, Gastr del Sol, Breeders, Evergreen, and The Lemonheads....etc...oh and King Kong...
Bought the EP and LP some 22-23 years ago, always amazed each time I listen ... epitomizes what hardcore meant. Not the bland veganized crusties, nor the post-metal posturing... this is the shit :)
oh, wow, so cool to see this on YouTube! back in the 80's i stumbled on the first Squirrel Bait and was subsequently blown away by their intensity. i can't count the number of mix tapes i made to turn on friends to their music. yeah, one of the great underappreciated bands of that decade. Squirrel Bait had both the melodic sense and brute power of other bands of that era like Husker Du and Mission of Burma, but never got the same critical acclaim, much less the success they deserved.
I was 17 when this record came out and to this day it still kicks me in the balls and makes me wonder what happened to music....these kids were 16!!!!!!!! Pete Searcy is an amazing singer for this genre and Ben Dougherty still is the fierciest drummer I have ever heard. Thanks for putting Hammering up, very coo.

Clark being that tall was always reassuring to me (I'm only 6'4"). He was always a kind fellow.

This was my favorite of their tunes. Great show in Minneapolis, way back in the day.

This band made so much sense. Twenty years on, I still listen to SB. It still sounds fresh.
