I want both, he didn't have to add that part in the end - what he should have said is I want to marry both of you and I'll try not to lavish my affection on her as I will on you.
@dmeiske1 If you read the books, it details that polygamy in the far future is still very illegal. So, most of royalty uses concubines instead, and everyone is pretty much ok with it.
One thing I don't get. In the book, he's the known emperor of the universe and in this he's that and the hand of God, why didn't he just say he'll have 2 wives? Few and far in between would oppose him on that and I doubt anyone who would do so could stand a chance against the guy who split the floor with his voice. His son obviously didn't care about what people thought and he ruled for 3500 years, he jacked someone bloodline and his own and married his sister.
@AlanMolstad I feel like he could have easily fudged that w/o anyone noticing, they don't really explain all of the prophecies about him or whether everyone even knows all of them, or said that this law is his mandate or something.
@AlanMolstad I know its not in the book, it applies to the movie though at least with this detail. In the book, he did have physical and mental superiority over others regardless.
Considering that Irulan later really does fall in love with Paul this is more tragic than one might think, especially given what it leads to in later books.
@Ranillon Poisoning wasn't exactly an act of love. If she had really loved Paul, she wouldn't have done what she did to him. She wanted Paul for the Bene Gesserit mission, his seed, but she never acted like she loved him.
is it true that with all the cut scenes added in this movie would have been around 6 hours? if any of you have it is there any possibility of uploading it on youtube?
@msudreaming It was most likely the editors and producers that cut it. If you ever watched the extended version of the film, you would know that Lynch didn't get along with them in the end. That is why he put the ficticious director's name of Alan Smithee on it. He hated it. If you watch the extended version, you will know why. I don't think they consulted him for it at all. It's a tradegy that we can't have a directors cut on one of the best filmed movies of all time. =(
The deletion of this scene makes me wonder if they really didn't want a Dune Messiah adaptation after this. Seems to me like this was a producers attempt to kill the movie early on.
@saracafferey It is in the TV ''extended cut'' along with the Hawat bits. It is inferior due to the repeated scenes and the excision of anything they deemed too violent, but it has two things better; the novel's end and the Gurney baliset scene. Me and a friend want to put together a project to create a better version of the film, both truer to Lynch than the TV cut and truer to the novel than the theatrical cut.
@kingbilgames I did like the Gurney baliset scene. I'm glad they put it on the extended edition of the DVD release. And I do agree that some scenes did need to be scrapped, but this one, even though it doesn't add a lot, it shows another side to Paul that is missing from the theatrical and TV cuts. Still...I wish you luck if you do go ahead with your project.
@DuneInfo Holy crapola! You are awesome! I had no idea that was out there. The extended TV version made me cry it was so horrible. There were major scenes that were left out of the original that are truer to the book. It's sad that good extended versions of films (Like the LOTR trilogy) are rare.
@saracafferey Remember they made this movie in 1984 and were shooting for big Star Wars mass general audience appeal. The whole bigamy thing was just too much for the studio execs who were probably afraid of right wing conservative protests.
"history will call us wives." direct quote from the last words in the first book. cool :)

Check out how the special effects stop after Jessica talks with Chani, their eyes go from Dust Blue to normal old brown in a split second.

I think they did release a DVD version of this years ago. I'm certain I've seen this before, but not on YouTube. Maybe it was added to a TV airing?
not sure....
What they ought to do, is collect all known footage, and create a full 2-disc digitally remastered Blu-Ray version, with a Dolby HD sountrack.
Then, sell it in a nice box with a copy of the books in hard back. A special edition of some sort.
I bet it would sell like hotcakes.

@PatriotCondor I would buy that, I've always wanted to see the full long version, I've only seen the shorter versions so far.

The one scene that should've been included was the death of poor Thufir Hawat.

@darkjediMIK an interesting question.
However Paul's real power came from the people's worship of him.
Their worship was because paul fulfilled what was said about him .
Thus Paul had to always stay in-line with what was predicted he would do.
if 2 wives were predicted then he could have, ...

@AlanMolstad Also, he can kill with a word apparently as the previous scene showed.
darkjediMIK 1 month ago
@darkjediMIK Im not sure he did that.
He is seen in the knife fight, and that agrees with the book.
But the shout after his kills the guy and the split flooring is not in the book as I remember.
His word brings death it is said.
But that context is about his new authority I think, not in any special powers.
