He's not playing it down, he's saying a film about an "internal struggle" doesn't sound interesting, and he's right it doesn't. But he says it in a way as if to say "Don't be put off by that.."

Even though after that he says it still really is interesting, why the fuck is he playing down the quality and appeal of his own movie by saying a comment like that? I feel so strongly about it because it really is a great movie that has been under-promoted by the studio, hence unappreciated by most of the general audience. WB are pissed because Pitt left them for Paramount. That's why they are being so petty over this film which is a shame because it was certainly the best of 2007 in my opinion.
