  • This one has lots of very very LOUD BITS!!! And lots of very very quiet bits.

    LOUD BITS Quiet Bits

    LOUD BITS Quiet Bits

    LOUD BITS Quiet Bits

  • This song was one of my greatest experience in live music... Dallas 1982!

  • Sit Down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I remember camping out for these tickets at the local "Ticketron." Philly has always had a love affair with Genesis. Each tour in the 80's would sell-out three nights at the Spectrum.

  • The '82 JFK show was my very first concert (I was 16 yo). It was part of the "JFK Jam" series of all day concerts in Philadelphia. Over 100,000 in attendance.

Since then I have seen Genesis 20 times. Great song by one of the best bands in the world.

  • Love it!

  • Oh ok. Now I know this is footage from JFK in Philly (thanks to AndyShriver mentioning this in his comment). Was there, Was There (with my older brother). about maybe 16 yards from the stage. Excellent standing area. All the other posts about this are true; Neat twirling lightShow clusters above the stage, shining down on the band. Everyone has such good memories! I remember while phil was doing his speal..Chester Grinning..Tony like 'I mean come on, its only suppers ready..!'...n Action

  • was there , i was 13 years old, 25 feet from the stage, i remember blondie, elvis costello, flock of seaguls, last time they played suppers ready was in the late 70's

  • You had to be there.... What a great day August 11 1982 at old JFK. I heard myself yell yeahhh right after the start. Thanks for posting this.. What a great show all those many years ago.

    Joe Archbishop Carroll 1979

  • phil collins is good, but many people miss peter gabriel in genesis

  • Nothing Without Peter Gabriel !!!

  • I was actually at this concert!!!! this was great! Thanks for posting it! (I didn't have a camera back then).

  • The good old days

  • Pretty good recording considering the date. I was at the show close to where it was bring recorded. People were clinging to the light towers to get a better glimpse. Such a long day after sitting thru the 4 other bands that day. That was my second JFK jam. People were hoisting others onto their shoulders, thus a lot of the crys for "sit down".

  • Saw this tour in Toronto August 1982, we drove from Vancouver Island when we heard they were going to do this. It was well worth it.

  • i was there. now the stadium is no longer. they blew it up or down or whatever you call it. and i remember him doing this like it was yesterday. i wish i could go back in time

  • that was alot of verys, its only been 10 years phil haha, i knew they did supper's ready on the abacab tour but i didn't know there was any footage this is amazing

  • @pinkfloydrule27

I Think, they didnt play Suppers during the Abacab Tour.

    Only since 1978

    1982 Complete

1986 Invisible Touch Tour(Apocalpyse Cage Medley, only in America)

1998 Calling All Stations only the Lovers Leap Beginning with Ray Wilson ;)

  • @chinwildchicken

They didn't play it at all U.S. shows. I've only heard one recording of the medley with 9/8+, and Phil sounded really rough. If i could pick a single version to see live, I'd go with the 77 tour. Phil's voice was never better and for my money it's better than with Pete (though i like the original./pete live versions too).

  • @spammeifyoumust No No, it Was Really Played at the First US Shows, But Only In 1986, It Looks like the Last Time Suppers Ready was in 23-Nov-1986 in New Zealand or in one of the Australia Shows(There were 17 Shows!!!), at any concert, they played then Afterglow for the Rest of the Tour :-(

  • @chinwildchicken They then played the opening part with Ray Wilson on vocals during the Calling All Stations tour. :)

  • @pinkfloydrule27 I agree. Some bands play music far older than 10 years.

  • I love this stuff, genesis at the top of their game.

  • I was at this concert, JFK was falling down even then... The reason everyone was screaming for people to sit down is because it was a flat football field and you couldn't see down front... and we had been there all day. This was the end of a show that had Blondie, Robert Hazzard and the Heroes, Flock of Seagulls, Elvis Costello and Genesis. Long day, hot sun... we ended up in the far back of the stadium in the stands.

  • With a spoonful of miracle, I'll have all the genesis bootlegs downloaded.

  • Whats with everyone screaming "sit down!"? How about "Shut up!"

  • Comment removed

  • Phil Collins should just shut up and play the music - he sounds like a circus announcer here.

  • agreed he's a fairy

  • If you're not a true die hard Genesis fans from the very first days I can see how this would be annoying, but those old guys like me are used to it and know it's part of the show. LOL.

  • What a great HOT August day at JFK.. Costello, Blondie, Robert Hazard, Flock of Seagulls. We were standing right around where this was recorded. I can even hear my yeaaa at 2:06.. and then a lot of SIT DOWNs from the crowd.. I do remember that well. I thought "Not on this Song" at the time.. We were all yelling at the guy for standing up taping this with a big rig of a bettaMax cam corder ... I was pissed then but soooo grateful now bro.

    Thanks

  • I was at this show as well as the next two nights at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in NY. Best setlist in the 1978-2006 live shows.

  • I know a farmer who looks after the farm.

  • There's always been Ethel.....

  • Good sound for a cam corder

  • Sure is!

  • Summer of 1982 - a hot, sticky afternoon in Philadelphia. I am not sure exactly what stands where JFK Coliseum stood, but, on that afternoon, 90K people saw an unforgettable show. Jimcutter1 - you know what I mean. The lineup: Robert Hazard & The Heroes, Flock of Seagulls, Blondie (Debbie Harry in a white dress that was translucent after 3 songs - the Stones Start Me Up was their encore), Elvis Costello & Genesis. Yes, Gene921 - the grid of lights swirling in unison over the stage was AWESOME!!

  • "SIT FUCKING DOWN!"

  • Yeah...always some dumb fuck who has to ruin the best parts of the show for others isn't there.

  • Holy crap! I was at this concert!!!

  • Agree Analogger, though these-days instead of only just having to watch afore-mentioned woman on shoulders and the "I'm from Canada" flag,we now can enjoy the view of our favourite band as seen through umpteen-thousand mobile phones..The band are through the forest of raised arms somewhere..

  • I was at this show and at least no one left mid song like this European gig. They talk through the whole song then leave. That's rude

Genesis Herning 2007 - Carpet Crawlers

  • That brings back a lot of horrible memories. "SIDDOWN! All fucking night. You save up to go to a show to hear a favorite band and you get a bunch of drunk fucks doing their best to ruin everything because they are manic with alcoholic euphoria and have decided to either put their girlfriend on their shoulder so she can scream "Whoo Hoo" to a band she has never heard or he and his pals puff their chests out to dare you to remove them from YOUR seat. SIDDOWN! I don't miss those days at all.

  • Brilliant. Wish we had ANY pro-shot '82 footage. Amazing they didn't document this tour. Great setlist. And the lights at the end of Supper's Ready were incredible.

  • A 3 Sides Live Encore Tour would be an extension of the ABACAB tour. I saw them twice during ABACAB and they played a lot of great old songs (just like SECONDS OUT) but they didn't play SUPPER'S READY when I saw them.

  • I LOVE this...this was when Phil was really developing his voice and getting away from his falsetto...he nails the falsetto of course but when the drums kick in for the "Guaranteed Eternal Sanctuary Man" bit he really belts it. Can't believe they were still doing the entire song even in the 80's!

  • The 82 Encore tour is last time they did the song straight through. They ignored it on the Mama tour and just played from Apocalypse to the end on the first half of the Invisible tour. I think Tony and Mike played the whole thing in 97 but Phil was gone by then so who cared right? What's funny is the idiot near the mic says "gotta be the lamb" when Phil says "almost 10 years old". Unreal! Nothing more despising than a historically uneducated genesis fan. 1st time supper for Daryl on guitar

  • Still haven't got my green box set yet...Gabriel years. Have the red and blue, but it a bit of a hard spot since the box came out last fall. Do you have it?

  • Hey man.. I don't have the last box.. I only have the blue one. The Red didn't interest me. Perhaps if things pick up in the economy I can purchase the green one. Priorities, you know? I am really interested in the live stuff this fall.. We'll see.. Cheers, Matt

  • Yeah, I'm a huge fan from all the eras, but the Blue Box Set covers my favorite era of their music, and I also feel it show cased all sides of their music skill wise when they were bridging the progressive rock and pop years. Love it all!

Definitely going to wait on the green box set until the economy picks up again, and I'm also looking forward to their live releases in the fall.

  • What a beautiful voice Collins has on this.

  • Collins does this song, for that matter this band a greater deal than Gabriel. His voice and approach on the older tunes were just more dynamic and the structure was a more powerful use of prog.

  • It truly is a shame they didn't keep playing this in the 80's. Phil sings so well in this and Mike and Tony are playing well too. But I guess there's two reasons why not: This song would be hard to play for audiences accostomed to the band's Top 40 hits and besides, no matter how well they play it, it'll never be quite the same with all five guys on stage.

  • American audiences are all twats.

  • This is actually a "rehearsal" for the genesis reunion at Milton Keynes Bowl in 1982. They did it only twice. Here and at the L.A. Forum. I sat 10th row for that. Bill Bruford even came out for Cinema Show!

  • Collins is the funniest music band member in the world.

  • This is great stuff...although the shouting and screaming over the music is getting annoying!

Wish I was around to see this live myself!

  • Have you ever seen Turn it on Again? They play this show perfectly!

  • What a dick he can't hold a candle to PG. Sold his soul the fat little t**t. This is disgusting

  • Wow! I'm amazed to see this one! I was there, also - great night. Elvis Costello did a brilliant set as well. Good old JFK stadium! Pre-world-wide-web days, you actually had no idea of the setlist - and Suppers Ready was a big surprise.

  • WOW, THANK YOU FOR THIS POST!!!!! I just was not like this in 07'. I flew to the last show at the Hollywood bowl. Lets see Gabriel next time around like it was suppose to happen in 07'.

  • WHY DID IT HAVE TO STOP!!! I WANT MORE! GENESIS why didnt you film it you tits??? Cheers MAGOG for this youre great!

  • Those were the days!

  • I absolutely love this. I wish someone had more film footage of this concert. Listening to this song again in this video makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck (just like that night).

I was the happiest person on earth when they broke into this song. God if only I had a time capsule. :)

  • It amazes me how ignorant and rude some audiences are. All that screaming and interrupting. Phil was clearly saying "it has many loud bits and QUIET BITS" for a reason! I realize the crowd loves them and is excited. But what are these dummies, 5 years old? Just LISTEN and applaud or cheer at appropriate times / the end of the tune.

    ,

  • American audiences always feel the need to "take part". Bless 'em.

  • After 1980 (when Genesis went Top 40)... Phil Collins really didn't like playing the old Gabriel stuff. Here we see him mocking the complexity of the old Prog Rock roots of Genesis. He once said, he had a "love-hate" relationship with that music.

  • Of course he did. He ruined the band. Honestly, Gabriel-era Genesis's music is genius, and his era's is too poppy. It's all about making money rather than about the art.

  • i too would have felt uncomfortable playing progressive rock to the "top 40-audiences" of the eighties. it's like playing some teenager who only cares about 50 cent a classical piece that you truly love. you know that he can't see the beauty in it, and that's frustrating. excellent performance, though, i was absolutely blown away by his vocals in "the guaranteed eternal sanctuary man"

  • I think because Phils had very few credits of composer about that stuff.

  • Collins was just looking for a band to play with. Pretty much any music style would have been fine with him. He said that he prefers R&B music to prog music.

  • R.I.P JFK STADIUM!!

  • I wish they'd join next year and perform Suppers Ready in like a theatre! ARGH I just had to have been born about 20 years after this awesome song was made.

  • Supper`s long gone!

  • Hahaha, that intro just cracks me up! I love these guys so much! Thanks for making my day! ^_^

  • I was 16 at this show. We took in coolers and cans (imagine that!)to JFK. Hot as hell outside, warranting fire hose douses from the stage. If memory serves me correctly, lineup: Robert Hazzard; Elvis Costello; A Flock of Seagulls (they stunk); Blondie (she ROCKED)followed at nightfall by Genesis. Phil opened w/trumpet in hand to the sounds of Dance on a Volcano. Fog, Varilites ablaze. I was in heaven. It was my favorite musical experience ever.Taking mydaughter to the Wachovia show tomorrow.

  • That was so great, I have never heard Phil doing that song ever.....and he did a nice job. Would love to see them play it in Chicago in October, but I don't think the audience is sophisticated enough for it. I am glad it was posted on here, thank you so much!!!

  • They should not have knocked the damn stadium down!

  • they did this song the last few night of the tour to warm up for the reunion concert w gabriel. I saw them do it at the l.a. forum, it was incredible. Bruford also showed up that night on Cinema Show.

  • I thought it was Chester Thompson since Seconds Out who was playing the drums with Phil Collins and Genesis.

  • Martin Levac's Turn It On Again band, amazing recreation of Genesis Three Sides Live! turnitonagainDOTcom for USA Tour Dates!

  • Nice footage. Thsi is from august 21 1982, John F Kennedy Stadium, Philadelphia PA

  • Martin Levacs Turn It On Again band at the Riviera Theatre in Buffalo Sept 22nd! turnitonagainDOTcom

  • Its really a shame they won't play this live, at least "Lover's Leap." Sounds mighty good to me!

  • Go see Turn It On Again!!! They play this song live! They do this entire show! (turnitonagainDOTcom)

  • schweet! I saw Merriweather as well... I hope the new tour rocks as well!

  • I was at the show in Philly as well. Having seen them live consistently since 1978, I consider the 3 Sides Live tour my favorite setlist. I managed to see them the next two consecutive nights at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in NY. That was quite a week to say the least!

  • tommyhess20, Martin Levac on the Musical Box has a band called Turn It On Again, they are amazing, they play this exact show, if they come near your town, see em, they played in Philly last night if you are from around there..

  • I was at this show too... Great late August (22nd I believe) afternoon with Flock of Seagulls, Robert Hazard, Blondie, Elvis Costello.. I think the person who yelled yeaaaah was me.. I was sitting about where this was taped... What a great show "all those many years ago" I also remember Tony Banks flubbing the very first few bars of the keyboard solo in the In the Cage - Cinema show medley.... My buddy and I both yelled "He F'ed up... We sooo appreciated that...

  • i love phil's singing, it's great! though man.. he doesn't look in the right place during this song!.. i mean the lyrics are about some personal peter stuff, so it's kinda weird when phil sings about peter's wife xD plus this song MUST include a flower person during willow farm. i bet phil never wore peter's costumes :l

  • Yup--- Have you seen the Musical Box yet?

  • I was at the merriweather show too!! I have a tape of this Philly show and Gary, sorry, but they started with Dance on a Volcano. Their encore was Lamb Lies Down / Watcher of the Skies (ending).

  • Yes it was....! I used to write em down in order and before three sides came out, started organizing them that way on tape so as to reconstruct the concert...

\Just saw them in Boston on 911... It was good to see them again, but not the same as 1982 (as to be expected)

  • omg i love genesis so bloody much.

    Wheres the whole song?!! :O

    <3 Genesis

Phil does this very well. Seems quite different to how PG does it tho!

  • Excellent footage.

Wait a second... Do I see another Bangor?? That's a first!

  • cool... i've never see them play live! I'm soo looking fordwart to the tunr it on again tour this summer!!

  • turnitonagainDOTcom.. check out a gig

  • It is really bad to see how little the main audience realises whats happening up there..all this chattering.Really gives you an idea why they stopped playing this after their turn into a pop-band.

  • wembley 82 took 10 mins till they could sing because of the audience cheering ....so much for just the hits hey Tony

  • This brings back great memories. I saw this tour in Maryland in August 1982. The sad thing was I had just started getting into Genesis, and only had the albums back to a Trick of the Tail (not including Seconds Out). Thus, although I enjoyed it at the time, I didn't know I was hearing the famous "Supper's Ready" (I guess I missed the intro to the song that night).

  • I was there that night. We about 20 yard from the stage and it sounded great. As I recall there was a girl sitting on someones shoulders- hence the yelling (It sounds like me and my friends yelling) . The bill was Robert Harzard, Flock of Seagulls (singer was ill) , Blondie (ok), Elvis Costello (great) and Genesis. Genesis started with the Lamb that night.

  • This is cool, I thought they stopped doing the full version of SR back in the 70's. I wish I could have seen this whole show live.

  • Nice find .

  • One of the best live versions I have ever heard of this classic...Phil, in my opinion does this song beautifully. Would love to hear Apocalypse and Eggs as Eggs from this footage. Looking forward to your other posts LiguidLen!

  • "Sit down" and listen

  • Wow, this is great! I used to live in the Philly area and Genesis has always been huge here, this stadium is where Live Aid was. Do you have the rest of the song you can post?

  • The footage ends there, so unfortunately there is no more, however I will post some complete songs from the same show this weekend.

  • Thanks,LiquidLen.I'll be watching.Say hello to the Smash Bottle Men for me.

  • haha, nice little joke there... BOEF;)
