  • I love how even the wild black palm cockatoo is saying hello!

  • i am very happy to see the birds in air of australia

every one should allow their caged bird to fly freely indoor once or twice a day

so they are happy and feel independent

  • 3:23 My female 'Tiel does that too.

  • @birdlady423

the ones that are companions are free to come out of the cage

  • LOL Patty melons. Haven't heard them be called that. We call them pig melons. Awesome vid though.

  • This will be my English Referat ? ^^

  • Oh and this movie is BEAUTIFUL !!!!

  • Does anyone know where I can buy this DVD now? As the PBS website does not sell "Parrots from the Land of Oz" nor "The Real Macaw" anymore =(

  • Just a quick note, those that own parrots out of a love for the bird allow them to fly and have a relationship with their birds that allow them to be outside and cage free in the home. I do not promote captive breeding as they are sadly becoming over populated, nor do I promote catching parrots in the wild, however, when they are kept in a manner that puts their health and happiness first they quite enjoy being pets much like dogs. =)

  • so beatiful

  • Thank you so much for this wonderful video.

    5 stars

  • what the hell , most australians live on the coast . we dont get to see all these parrots . and birds . we dont take them for granted cause we dont even know they are there ,

  • @lozenge18 when I was visiting my boyfriend in Melbourne I was confused as to how he didn't know the difference between a Pied Currowong and a Willy Wagtail. But it's like an American trying to tell the difference between a raven and a crow...if you're used to something around you you just don't take as much notice as a tourist would. I'm learning my lesson now...I used to think Boomers were all over the country but naw, Eastern Greys are more common apparently which freaked me out XD

  • Are you trying to say they are better off in cages ???? nobody is trying to wipe them out ... you obviously do not understand the balance of nature in Australia

  • Yet australian farmers often kill cockatoo's because they eat their crop. Also, i doubt you are dazzled every time you see a flock of corellas fly by like someone from another country would be. if you are than people might start thinking you're odd. it's just not as special as some other places.

  • @bananatree94 true that.. I live in Western Sydney... Heaps of corellas which aren't native here

  • @bananatree94 well if I were a farmer and some damn birds ate my crops, I would kill or just capture them too and it their meat.

  • In a way i pity the Australians because parrots are nothing special to them anymore... they seem to take them for granted unlike people of other nations.

  • 0:14 "Eeeraaaraauuu" so cute!

  • I fell bad that i put my budgies in a cage, they look so happy in the wild!

  • And what sort of a life are most of them going to.Shuffled around from one place to another.

  • man i would lvoe to go to Australia and sit amongst a flock a wild parrots

  • @werecatgirl it's the most beautiful feeling in the world, looking up into the sky and seeing Cockatoo's flying about you and Rainbow Lorikeets eating at a feeder. Save up the money and go, being in Australia is worth waiting 100 years to get to. It's the most beautiful country in the world and it's why I'm in the process of immigrating <3

  • @werecatgirl

yeah and being a typical human, you'd probably also love to capture one of those wild parotts, lock it up in a 2x2 foot cage and teach it to mimic silly human words for the rest of its life...for your "entertainment". lol.

  • I think Parrots are wonderful and can adapt to our urban wastelands from LA to New York without displacing native species, It's a testament to the resiliance of nature. I wish they had more in Phoenix.

  • Actually you don't see hardly any parrots in the cities of Australia when compared to the thousands and thousands you see out in the bush. They don't fair well in cities at all even if there are plenty of trees and one reason is because many of them have very specific needs in reguards to nest for breeding. For example many of them require very old trees which have hollows in them and most trees of that age are removed from biult up areas. However Lorikeets fair pretty well in suburbia

  • google parrots in brooklyn, they have them here in this urban environment!

  • I live in Adelaide, South Australia and there are parrots everywhere all year round. Every day you see Cockatoos, Corellas, Lorikeets, Rosellas and Galahs in flocks. I've been to both New York and L.A. and it is a definate impossibility for any parrot to survive in New York...

In L.A. or Phoenix maybe... But if you wanted the big parrots in your city it'd probably take centuries of planting River Red Gums, Sugar Gums, sheoaks, Hakeas, acacias etc... Most of them need proper bushland.

  • Hey! Dont forget the urban menace - the Ibis!!

You telling me you haven't seen a thilthy ibis or twenty picking rubbish scraps out of the city trash bins? They LOVE garbage dumps too. LOVE EM!

Their behavior makes their image associated with thilth and grime, well to me and many I know it does anyway.

  • Hahaha, of course, the ibis. I don't really see em down my way but when I go up to my Dad's place in the northern suburbs I see them loitering around. They make me laugh.

  • tyshawilliams, thanks for the info about the parrots in brooklyn. It's their food source during Winter and how they cope with the cold that surprised me. I've learned something new today!

  • ibis are not parrots..

  • Agreed. Even pet cockatoos in America that I see on youtube look unhealthy, don't you think? It's just not natural for them there. I live in Brisbane.

  • there are parrots in both new york AND L.A. the parrots in New York are Quaker parrots and the parots in L.A. are conures and amazons.. and the parrots in Phoenix are african lovebirds. None of these are native but they do thrive there.

  • Well every spring like right now, parrots do come to visit LA county. Theres a whole gang of them outside right now and they won't shut the fuck up. I had no idea that they were conures.

  • Because they decimate crops. Cockatoos LOVE corn - and they'll destroy a farmer's crop...so to protect crops there is open hunting/shooting of cockatoos all year long!

  • little zebra finches too! it's heaven on earth! As far as making parrots pets being a sin, well, it would seem as though maybe you've never known someone who shared their home with one. I don't know about the rest of you but my birds use their cage as home base. They are not confined to it. They fly around as they see fit. I have at least two of each species I keep so they are not alone. I'd have to say that they all seem to be pretty happy here.

  • How beautiful to see them in the wild--they DO NOT BELONG in homes--in CAGES--suffering they belong out in GODS GREEN EARTH!!! Making parrots pets is a sin, how can something that needs to fly around make it inside in a little cage

  • Woah man take it easy, not all pet parrots are kept in cages, i have a pet Rosella and Cockatiel and they only go in their cages to sleep and eat. They both managed to get outside once but as soon as they did they came straight back. And thats quite a feat seeming our rosella was origionally wild-ish, we took him in after we found him during a heat wave he was so exhausted that he came to us for help. He may have been from an avary we don't know but he trusted us very quickly.

  • Yeah! I have a sulphur crested cockatoo, he's sitting in my lap right now. He only goes in his cage to sleep and if no one's home, which isn't often. He gets to climb around in big wattle and gum trees and loves it! He's happy and healthy. He was from a breeder so someone has to look after him! Plus it's his birthday today! Happy birthday Ade.

  • @JoniStudent25 I think you are being way too harsh and overgeneralizing. in my house, we have two parakeets, a cockatiel, four finches, and a cockatoo, all of which primarily live in their cages and are very happy birdies! now before you go telling us we are hoarders or sinners or WHATEVER, know that we (being my mother, brothers and i) fostered and then adopted these birds from a rescue bc they were being neglected. not all bird owners are evil!!

  • when did it broadcast on chanell 11

    ???

  • It aired in January 2008...you can purchase the DVD in January 2009 from the PBS website.

  • My budgie loved it (so did i)! He likes the bit with all the birds round the waterhole.

  • I am a bird lover , and i am so happy i found this video because now i can subscribe to you and see more.

  • i have visited oz and they are everywhere! and so beautiful!

  • This was produced by Australian Broadcast Commission and has been dubbed with an American voice, to make out it, was produced by americans.

  • Thanks for pointing that out so the credit can go to the right people! They did a WONDERFUL job showing us your awesome wild flocks of parrots that most of us will never get to see 'up close'!
