  • i have done all the steps exept the screew and washer thing wich i will do later...

anyways i put it al back togeather and plugged it in and turned iton and i still have the rrod :(

i heard you mentionabout unplugging the fan and such? then later on you said its bs so idk what to do now...

  • when you heat your xbox do you leave the fan unplugged?

  • what do u do if when u turn it on the fans or anything turn on other than the three lights???

  • HDMI Xbox 360's don't get the full ring of death.

  • @SAMCAMJAIK1 what do you mean exactly? it does get the three lights but is that not it then because my Xbox is HDMI? if it doesn't get the full R.R.O.D. then what does it get?

  • rubber washers melt if it gets hot? why not metal ones?

  • @DaTzBrAnDoN I don't think there's any way an Xbox can get hot enough to melt the rubber washers. I tested multiple consoles and found out the average temperature of an Xbox during normal usage is approximately 52*C. That's not nearly enough to melt the rubber washers.

  • @DaTzBrAnDoN im pretty sure (not certain) that metal washers would cause a short or something so rubber makes sence to me.. but idk

  • One more thing. Once components and boards are isolated static electricity can partly or totally damage some sensitive components. So it's proper practice to use a grounding plane and grounded wrist-band via 10Mohm resistor.

  • The main aim of thermal compound is to fill in the imperfections between the die and the heatsink. Therefore you should use only the very minimum to fill in microscopic scratches. The compound improved thermal coupling. Some people polish the heatsink to reduce the scratches, and if that has any value - scratching it with the exacto-knife is a step in the wrong direction. If you can be sure that the heatsink surface is very flat and shiny, this is likely to give the best results.

  • Does anyone know if this works for the 0110 error?

  • at 2:01

    That's the thermal compound bro . . . .

  • I've taken the heat sinks off and done the nuts, bolts and artic silver on chips and still the ring of death, the fan not running and the heat sing are cold no mater how long its on for, if I heat up the right side of the mother bored next to the heat sink for less then a minut I comes on for about 3 minuts then back to fan off ring of death can anyone help?

  • @MySpangled Your console is permanently damaged because you had a trash repair done on it, probably multiple times. The ONLY way to properly repair it is a reball/reflow using a BGA welder. Do not be fooled by the bad repairs floating around on here. HGCGamersClub is a real repair man who actually knows how to fix these issues. Check out his channel. Every other "repair" on the internet is the result of some dumb kid saying "this is how i fixed it" with no knowledge of electronics at all.

  • can i use any thermal paste?

  • I did this to 2 xboxs works for about a month then dosent work and still hasnt :(

  • I just finished, but the 3 rings only went down to 2... now what?

  • this really really really helped me, I'm thinking of buying broken ones off ebay and fixing them and selling them :) thanks mate great video :) still working okay?

  • what city you in i have a rlod 360 need repair!!

  • can you still play the xbox without the cover?

  • Have you had to take it apart since this fix?

  • @switch55 Nope, it's still running like a CHAMP!!

  • @fluiditystudio Very Cool! Just finished mine but had to resort back to the X brackets since I couldn't get a feel for how flush the contact points were and was still getting rrod. But at least it's working and didn't have to do any over heating trick. Started right up and we had it under load for 9 hours yesterday on a 4 xbox system link.

  • In your case you put the CPU on sideways and it over heated doing the towel trick because you were too stupid to know the direction of the heat sink! If you do not know what the hell you are talking about you should not try and teach anyone how to fix this video I guarantee will result in many needless deaths of Xboxes remove it at once!

  • i have all these things i had applied the thermal compound, it works until like 2 weeks i get the rings again, when i play it wants to work but then the screen glitches with bunch of red squares can you help?

  • I bought some smaller rubber washers on accident?? Does it affect it?

  • Okay, a little education for you all with 4 rings:

1 ring = Hardware is defective (You get something specified on the screen)

2 rings = Overheating (let it cool)

3 rings = A little more urgend hardware issue (CPU, GPU, RAM)

4 rings = A/V Cable, so it isn't "toast" when you have 4 rings of death.

If you have 3 rings, you can read out an exact error code by pressing the controller sync button and eject. Now press eject 4x again.

The lights will show you the number.

    Note: 4 rings = 0 in number

  • Thanks a lot this worked out perfect for my xbox

  • So thats 8mm screws yeah?

  • At least yours has a nice copper pipe mine is plain Jane lol 100% aluminum heat sinks, but I replaced my compound also but I don't have the screws yet but plan on getting them because the X clips suck!

  • Comment removed

  • lol the only time i dont have wd40

  • Check out my xbox repair parody!

  • i have an xbox pro.. i did this same process.. but i used "Dielectric Grese".. and mine doesnt work.. i just hit the button and it starts flashing.. nothing happens.. am i doing anything wrong?

    or possibly doing something wrong?

  • Thanks. Worked on mine. :) great vid

  • it's not the same exact thing. the silver has actual silver in it which makes it a better thermal conductor

  • Would the xclamp replacement be considered unnecessary and extreme to do on a jasper console?

  • this is NOT a permanent fix and will FRY your motherboard. HGCGamersClub has the right method of fixing these consoles. The only way to prevent/repair rrod is a proper reflow/reball using a BGA welder. Not a towel, not bolts that crack your motherboard, and for sure not a heat gun.

  • @metallicastarwarsfan,Why don't you better publish something usefull instead of being talking garbage, this guy who posted the video wanted to help.

You should be explaining on a nice way what is wrong on the video so other people can correct it.

  • Finally someone who doesn't sound like they're scamming you. Great video quality and well spoken commentary.

  • This was a fantastic video! I have never opened up an xbox and once I found another video on how to properly crack it open, this was terrific for how to fix the RROD issue with three lights. Very informative and extremely helpful. Microsoft said they can fix it for me for $120... and I plainly said I'll fix it myself, and I'm glad I did. Save myself $100! (Bought Torque screwdrivers and Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound at Radio Shack) Thank you for posting this video!

  • I use wd40 for my cuz's rust on his bike chains lmao

  • having some trouble, I followed all the instructions... got it down to 2 red lights but now every time I turn it on it is still blinking 2 red lights...I let it sit with the fan off and then tried it with the fan on and still no luck...plus my power cord has changed from orange to red to back to green...please help

  • @SweetIndependentChic I want to prove to you 100% this man knows nothing about electronics and even less about Xboxes learn the truth about this type of repair on my channel the HGCGamersClub first click on this video and pause it on 00:47 look closely at the large heat sink now fast forward it to 09:37 you will note that the CPU heat sink is on sideways this means that no matter what this moron dues it will over heat within 1 minute every time!! It will remove any chance at a lasting repair

  • do you have to put the thermal compound in the little squares around the chip?

  • Excellent video, Did you reflow the board at anytime with a heat gun, i was wondering when/if this is neccessary, as ive seen it done in other videos ? Thankyou.

  • On the back of my motherboard there are these metal crosses holding the heat sinks down as opposed to just screws. Any ideas on how to get them off?

  • @tcorp12 those are the x-clamps lol just watch any xbox 360 disassembly video to get them off. If you want the screws he uses you need to buy them

  • What is an Xbox 360?

  • @Masaries1234 its a car..

  • Very good video! Question: When did your 3 RROD appear? On console startup or after a few minutes of heating? Thanks!

  • @magnotera It started almost instantly. I went to watch a movie on my xbox and it happened right when it started playing the movie.

  • @magnotera I want to prove to you 100% this man knows nothing about electronics and even less about Xboxes learn the truth about this type of repair on my channel the HGCGamersClub first click on this video and pause it on 00:47 look closely at the large heat sink now fast forward it to 09:37 you will note that the CPU heat sink is on sideways this means that no matter what this moron dues it will over heat within 1 minute every time.

  • @HGCGamersClub Before bashing on people and calling them names, look at 10:40. If your life ever becomes mistake-free then maybe you can start commenting.

  • @magnotera If you are teaching kids how to repair an Xbox 360 at least you should know how to install the heat sink properly before making the video “this repair is garbage to start with” if it was a good repair or he only misspoke a word I would have never bothered making a comment but not only dues he not know how to repair this repair will kill your Xbox or remove all possibility of a lasting repair: L

  • This was probably the most helpful video on youtube for fixing 360's i'm going to best buy today but i'm not sure what thermal compound to use dynex, mx2, or artic silver if anyone knows i would appreciate it leaving in about 2 hours thanks.

  • @fuel4sandman It shouldn't matter which one, but I used dynex and it worked for me!

  • @fuel4sandman artic silver is the best IMO

  • @ESPguitarFREEK arctic silver also has an AWESOME cleaner to go with the paste that pretty much wipes everything away

  • if thats an original xbox why u dont have the original cpu heat sink? u have the new alluminum

the old ones have copper on them

  • can you have a fried chip that would keep it red ringing

  • its not working on all xbox

  • So after putting everything together, it is ok to plug in the fan or leave it off for a few with the xbox on? video is also very helpful, thank you!

  • lol 4 RROD is when you don't have the av cable in a non HDMI xbox (xenon)

  • Does this work for the newer Xbox's? Not the slims.

  • in addition to what your video instructs, do you remove the 4 pads on the other side of the mother board and replace them with pennies insulated in electrical tape with the compound?

  • I think 3 rings is a General Hardware Error on the originals...

  • Anyone notice the video time slider is a snowflake?

  • so fired up, followed the steps and got my xbox to work. 2 things: I didnt use any substance to clean the chips and I had to turn in on with no fan until i had two red lights, let it cool, then got no red lights.

  • @partyboy4535 Any problems since?

  • still working?????? pllz answer

  • lights when i turned it on, then 5-10 minutes later it started flashing 2 red lights and the xbox smelled like a girl has been blow drying her hair for 10mins that bitch stank, so then i says ok thats good (i think) then i turned it off for 5-10mins plugged fan back on, then i seen the green lights circling and xbox dashboard!~@#$ i was fucking crying, and thats my story!!!! THANK YOU FOR THE GUIDE!!@# helped me 100%, ima let the compound dry over night 6:00pm right now, i comment see if it work

  • @marketday12345 still working?

  • I DID IT!@#$%^ I FIXED MY XBOX TODAY!!@##@#!@ WITH THIS GUIDE!!@#$% IAM SOOO FUCKING HAPPY AND EXCITED!!!@#$!$ MY XBOX FINALLY WORKS!@#$%^ i gotta say tho, once i put the compound on and the screws with all the washers and put everything back, then when i turned on the xbox it still kept flashing 3 red lights i was like FUCK!@# wat i did everything right!@, then i seen teko400's comment (a few comments below mines) and then i unplugged the fan, and turned on the xbox it still kept flashing 3 lit

  • DO NOT USE WD40 FOR CLEANING IT WOULDNT COME OFF !!! USE SOMETHING LIKE 90% ALCHOHOL OR ARCTIC CLEAN 1 AND 2 BAUGHT FROM RADIOSHACK

  • only thing I did differently is. after the thermal compound I didn't plug in the fan. I waited for two red lights, turn off and disconnect the power. plug in the fan and power up. everything is good.

  • @teko400 have u had any problems since or is everything still good??

  • @teko400 Is it still working?

  • Thank you , followed your instructions and it works....

  • @MegaOscarrrrr yes (if the backplain isnt to damaged yet..)

  • i tried it and it didnt work...im gonna try the penny trick now and double check myself if i didnt make any mistakes on my first try with cleaning up the heat sicks and chips....

im kinda bummed out it didnt work had good hopes for it to work...

  • @RvE15021985 Try reflowing it the penny trick will destroy it for ever...

  • thanks !! it work perfectly for me ! cost me less than 20 bucks instead of 140

but i mix this trick with the one with 8 penny wrap in electric tape and it work A1

  • How did you remove the original screws out of the heat sinks? My heat sink screws are almost impossible to remove.

  • @coolsmek thats cause of the heat that caused the system to expand an shrink multiple thimes... I would reccoment using warmth... Not to much or youll burn circuits..

  • i bought all the shit i need.. now going to try this fix... ill report back later if it worked..

  • Haha i was reading some if these comments and people say wd40 is a lubricant lol..... Fucking dumb asses it's a cleaner not a lubricant

  • Comment removed

  • @xXhackandmodsXx I hope you know that wd-40 can also be used as a lubricant, i use it for the gearbox on my rc crawler ever 2-3 months and its never sound better. yes you use it to clean rust or clean out a carburetor on a small engine but it works as a lubricant, no its not white lethium grease but it still works. next time don't be so one minded.

  • @xXhackandmodsXx ur so fucking stupid it is a lubricant u dumb ass, i hate it when city people try to talk about things they dnt know about

  • Use ISOPROPYL Alhohol to clean it... Just make sure you dont spill it on the motherbord or any chip

  • 16 rubber washers???

Are they already included in the xbox or do i have to buy them..

    If yes which format

  • I have a xbox 360 with 3 lights of death all I did like the video again and I have 3 lights not know what more to do I would thank you in advance for advice

  • well i dont know about you guys, but i did this and it work for me!!!!!!

  • fixed

  • In Toronto. WD40 clean it complete looks new no need to scrape with knife. I just bought the screws and washers and thermal compound...I purchsed nylon washers instead rubber reason is I feared the rubber may deteriorate over time and being subject to heat....plus they wear 10 cents each compared to 33 cents each at Rona the screws were 33 cents each. PC Yonge and Eg Artic silver $12 talk down to $10 but I got another brand he suggested for $2. will put the xbox back tonight and report.

  • wd40= bad idea. its a lubricant so it leaves deposits i would use a 97% or higher alcohol like isopropyl

  • you can use a jewelers flat scew driver with a pair of pliers in stead of a t8 worked 4 me i think it was the largest jewelers flat i have

  • I had open issue then came the 4 rings of death!

  • Just a bit of advice: you don't need to put that much thermal compound on. For a chip that small, you only need half a rice grain right in the middle, don't spread it, instead, when you put the heatsink on it'll spread the paste and it will result in the best chip+compound+heatsink contact.

Arctic Silver is great, 5 has silver in it so you definitely can't let it overflow as it will short the other components and possible result in more damage (MX2 probably wiser choice).

  • Woooooah buddy, you put way too much thermal compound on. You shouldn't have a sloppy mess after spreading it around, rather you should have a nice and even spread. Otherwise nice vid. :)

  • Just to clarify something, the 4 lights of death means it's an issue with your A/V cable. It is probably the easiest to fix. In most cases, you simply need to buy a new cable.

  • What is wd40

  • @laxhacker Seriously?? wd40.com/

  • @fluiditystudio wd40 or some rubbing alchohol is what i tried on my playstation.

  • @laxhacker what a retard

  • @laxhacker its Water Displacement 40th formula

  • woah you went for the dynex SHIT instead of Arctic Silver 5?

  • @fluiditystudio I am going to do this tomorrow cause I got the 3 rings. One question. So you don't have to have the xbox heat up and then cool down?

  • Same here!

  • Whats the odds of that, I 2 had my xbox from 2007 and now in 2011 it decide to break on me.

  • @jonathanyung93 same here!...im right now trying this fix...

  • @tipsymofo i fixed mine by my self if you want i could sorta help you if you want me 2

  • WD-40 works best in cleaning those indeed

  • @SoulReaper1900 ISOPROPYL Alcohol (instead of WD-40) is my solution!!

  • this happened to me before but my harddrive wasnt pushed in all the way so always check that first instead of taking it apart

  • It's alive !!! But I couldn't find washers to fit the screws? Is that ok? Thanks man.

  • @PYSCOPOMP I guess if it's working, that's ok. LOL! I always recommend the rubber washers though.

  • a man i need your help, since i bought the screws and washers,i did it on friday and it worked, but then i realized that i the heatsink was put on wrong,so again i took the heat sink out and put it in and the 3 lights would come on but 35 sec after i turned it on,it kept doin it so i put thermal compound on it again yesterday and again today so i let it over heat again until there was 2 lights then i let it cool down and i again turned it on and the 3 red lights came on after 35 sec

  • @Makaveli152pac I could be that you when you adjusted the heatsink again, that you didn't screwed it down tight enough and the heatsink isn't actually touching the CPU.

  • @fluiditystudio would i need to put the thermal compound on again or just tighten it more ?

  • @Makaveli152pac I don't see any need to keep piling on the thermal compound. I say to just try tightening down the screws a little more and see if that works.

  • @fluiditystudio should the 3 red lights come up after 35 sec.or like right when u turn it on

  • @Makaveli152pac Mine never came back after I fixed it. As soon as I plugged it in, it worked right away. The 3 red lights still haven't come back. Although, it could happen right away or after a few minutes.

  • do you really need the screws for it to work ?

  • @Makaveli152pac I suppose you don't if you can keep your X-clamps from getting all bent up when you are taking them off, but I would highly suggest replacing them with screws. If you look at other videos online, they all say to replace the X-clamps with screws and washers. For such a small cost, why would I try to even use the X-clamps again? Just replace them....

  • @fluiditystudio alright thanks man i did it yesterday and it worked, but does your xbox 360 still function ?

  • @Makaveli152pac Yes, it's working perfectly!

  • Comment removed

  • your video is the first video that actually tells me what i need to buy

    other than the thermal compound

  • Is your 360 still working now with noe problems?

  • @faustino5751 Yes, it's working perfectly. I'm even going to mod the case soon and put a Whisper Max fan in it with LED's!

  • @cAnNaBioNoiD Yeah, I did put the Heatsink on in the wrong position in that clip. Then I later caught the mistake when I went to fan cover back on and had to fix the position. GOOD EYE!! Your probably the only person who actually caught that!

  • at 9:35 was the CPU cooling element mounted wrong ^,^ but nice tut

  • Kudos to you.

  • This is going to my fravorites to use in the future

  • @MrCanadaViral, I'm glad it worked and my video was able to help you!

  • It worked! Took like 1 hr but actually worked! 5 Stars!

  • Looks alright!

  • Great video thank you

  • Sam Adams nice
