  • John is a true American Legend, I listen to this song everyday in the car and I just never get sick of it, What if I came knocking is also a great song along with about a couple hundred songs he has written.

  • The beauty of this JM song is that he wrote/performed it and let us decide what it's about. If I know the man, he's had a couple of good laughs and moved on. oh....and collected his (well-deserved) residuals. Great tune.

  • feelings of light, feelings of despair, yes...but without resignation.

an appropriate lens with which to see the human condition at the widest angle

something is so very sad here, though. it's almost unbearable, it's a vision you can't hold for long before you need to distract yourself with something more trivial.

  • I just wan't to be in top comments.

  • Why does everyone have to argue in here? Why can't you people just sit back and enjoy the music?

  • @BlackDiamondPublish Cause this is YouTube?

  • @williamskidfears Yes! lol

  • Thumbs up if you're a Belieber!!!

  • somebody ever tryin to put john down??? the devil is a lie- hes the best ever

  • Your vocabulary and sentence construction is rather............impressive.

  • john is the best

  • MAI DIRE GOL!!! LE ANNATE MIGLIORI

  • this video was sent to me. Weird video. John grew up just like this... can you figure out which one he was in the video?

  • A song of deep and sobering reflection, beautifully executed. Mellencamp is a great poet.

  • fuckin never thought i would like a mandolin in a rock song but i do ALOT ! they kept from making it sound bluegrassy. KUDOS !

  • one great vid one great song ! so fitting to this day.........

"its in our nature to destroy ourselves" ......

  • A song my budding guitar-playing daughter should know - if not soon, eventually. A song I love but did not hear with my wife at Massey Hall was missing from the set. There were so many others that we still went away in love, again. The songs, the music has the ability to transport you to more human, considerate times. John C. has always had humanity in his music and it translates universally.

  • I love the brooding undertone of this song.

  • one of my favs love it!

  • Kenny Aronoff is a terrific drummer! Just like John Bonham, Stuart Copeland & Neil Pert of RUSH he has a very unique sound and style! Go listen to Uh-Huh, Scarecrow & Lonesome Jubilee. :)))

  • Es tétrica la vieja del 3:58..

  • i could listen to Johns jam anytime all night- never get tired or bored of it- his music evolves

  • Brilliant work. Definitely one of the most profound pieces of music out there.

  • I could write the same remark in every video by John mellencamp. He is without a doubt one of the shortlist of greatest artists period. Every song is deep with feeling for people and his band are among the best, always.

  • John is one of the most under appreciated American songwriters of all time. He's up there with Dylan, Springsteen and Billy Joel imo. His video's always reflect the song perfectly. I love this track and many more from his repetoire.

  • ESTA SONG NO LO OIA ACE MUCHO TIEMPO ,,,,ES BUENISIMA

  • stasera lkive a vigevano... yeahh me lo vado a vedere

  • this is easily one of the greatest songs ever written - in my humble opinion,

and the lyrics HAVE to be up there w/ anything The Beatles,Jim Morrison or Robert Plant ever wrote.....just an awesome song !!!

  • @waqqodonkey I agree it is to bad that John is a dying breed, What have we got? Lady GaGa? Not much in my eyes.

Kids need to start picking up instruments and schools must do more to educate kids theory and kick start a new generation of song writers and musicians.

Just my 2 cents. Cheers =]

  • @waqqodonkey True,....This man evolved over the decades and this song...the depth...beats anyhing ever...John outdid himself on this

  • It's a great song that was buried as rock radio slid toward classic rock, and the so-called "alternative" stations wouldn't touch it. Mellencamp addresses a lot in this potent song, and a daring video. Even warnings we can lose all of this are contained within, and he shows people as people. The glam mocks consumerism and the two overweight men certainly represent a lot of us among the working class. The smoking? People smoke no matter the attempts to censor it, just as people drink.

  • Love it...... from dust to dust, we all share that don't we??

  • il mese prossimo suona a due passi da casa mia... ovviamente ci saro' a vederlo

  • a 1 persona non piace mai dire gol!

  • This is one his deeper better songs with an interesting video showing life in rural Indiana, but why do they have to show 12 scenes of people smoking cigarettes-disgusting! Even John is shown on here smoking, part of the reason that he had a heart attack some years ago. Maybe this is a promotion to show that smoking to not glamourous at all.

  • Mellancamp lives in a world of freaks and carnies - and calls it normal....

  • @MANHATTANBEEFMAN You are indeed an uneducated fuck.......You have probably never even set foot on California soil...Cal Poly is a top engineering and agriculture school you dipshit...Say no to fuckin tech schools run by moneygrubbers and illequipped and poorly educated numbnut assholes like you Go fuck yourself LLLooooLLL is that as smart as you can be fuckface...Really LLLoooLL is that all you got faggot??

  • 0 dislikes, woah thats rare in the youtube dimension.

  • I really love this song!

  • who cares! --John Mellancamp is the best american artist ever! NO DOUBT about it!

  • @diamonddhk222

Hey i love John too but let's not go overbaord here, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel are all great artists too.

  • @Purple1984Rain dont forget Prince ^^

  • @Kaisertoji

You know I LOVE his royal purpleness but i wouldn/t put him in the great songwriters off all time category. Overall artists yes!! :)))

  • Not only is this my favorite Mellencamp song, but its video has Rip Rogers in it. Nothing bad to say about it. Nothing at all.

  • He looks like a psycho dancing alone on that warehouse. All 90's videos look the same. Good song.

  • muy buena rola me gustaria saber la traduccion en español

  • @georguslopez buscala en google "human wheels lyrics al español"...simple no?

  • Truly great song that didn't get the support and promotion that it deserved from the record label.

  • I consider this to be tribute to human life in all it's forms. Well done John. By the way John your fans in Europe are waiting for your visit.

  • I think the song, and the video especially, is about the diversity of the human race, that differences are there whether people want them to be or not, that everyone has a side of them that few or none know, and most especially that regardless of how you lived your life, it will end, so it's how you lived it that counts more than how you were imbodied while alive. Well, that's what I get from it anyway. Perhaps I am misinterpreting it on every level though. **shrugs**

  • @tigerlilly9772 No...Indeed....Your insight is keen and penetrating...I do not know that even John could have said it better..Impressive interpretation

  • @tigerlilly9772

well said. This song is very deep and profound and talks about humanity and the human race. Reminds of the beautiful poetic stuff Dylan wrote back in the 60's.

  • @tigerlilly9772 "unequal to this sweeping curve of life." Maybe a Lutheran Indiana boy looked at some Kant "while grandra held my hand."

  • @tigerlilly9772 I think you have written the deepest most logical thing I´ve ever seen on a video comment. You are absolutelly right, I get the same thing from this song. It´s not about adjusting to societys parameters, it´s about embracing what we truly are, what makes us unique, wheter anyone like it or not. Great song, great video, great message.

  • @tigerlilly9772 I think it's about a human being that has wheels on it. Kinda like a Transformer dealy. I could be wrong though.

  • MI FUTURO CREO? Ahora los sueños más allá de mi culpa terrenal .

  • Wonderful!

This singer is very good! Beautilful song!!!

  • Manhattanbeef i take it your a bruce springbox fan?..need i say more.

John mellencamp: the truely gifted and talented alternative to the yankee doodle dandy commecial sellout bullshit artist named above....

strange video tho, but better than the bullshit "feel good" americana that was being rammed down our throats by other simmilar/disimmilar artists at the time.

    thank god im British!

  • Fuck, there is a song by Izzy Stradlin called Sweet Caress. Someone on that vid told me to watch this cause it sounds similar. What a discovery! Any suggestions for albums which reflect this kind of sound by him?

  • @TheStigsIndianCousin

Listen his '85 album "Scarecrow". it's amazing!!!

  • was that buddy rodgers?

  • Brilliant!

  • very very good song and very very good video

  • Also - if this is what the 'heartland of America' is like then I'm very happy I fly over it to get to the more civilized parts.

Mellancamp lives in a world of freaks and carnies - and calls it 'normal'.

  • @MANHATTANBEEFMAN fuck u

  • @MANHATTANBEEFMAN Hey dildo...You ever lived in the midwest??????You sound like an arrogant prick....This country was built largely on midwestern people......Grow a brain you piece of shit

  • @djk28161

Listen - you and those like you need to disengage from your midwestern inbreeding protocol and give the human gene pool a chance to rest, heal and regenerate in a healthy manner (this would not include having children with your close relatives - or referring to your mommy as your 'significant other'.) Tthere are rules in normal society so stop dating your relatives. Two heads are better than one only when they are on separate individuals.

    Thaaaaannnnkkkkssss! Shhhheeeessshhhh!!!

  • @MANHATTANBEEFMAN Like I asked asshole....Have you ever lived there?????? I graduated with a masters degree from U of Minnesita in Education.....Did you go to college???? ...Aside from maybe some fucking 10 month tecg program in electronics????You sound like a really ignorant piece of shit speaking of things about which you know nothing.....It's fuckheads like you that make good candidated for eugenics...if you even know what that means??????Retarded , ignorant bastard

  • @djk28161

There isn't a chance that you've graduated from college - let alone earned a Master's degree. Mine is from CalTech - btw - a little school in Pasadena.

Your lack of education is obvious with your use of vulgarity - a little bit for emphasis is fine but too much exposes your obvious lack of good breeding and your.......well, stupidity. Good luck with that in today's world, btw.

    LOLLLLL

    Just say no to inbreeding!

  • @MANHATTANBEEFMAN Vulgarity has nothing to do with it...Cal Tech???????How inferior......I grew up in Ca. and gradfuated from Cal Poly...SLO.If yiou know where that is..........Stupidity is defined by your lack of experience and exposure to other people...I have aSKED YOU....hAVE YOU EVER LIVED IN THE MIDWEST......iF YOU HAVEN'T TRAVELLED THERE THEN YIOU ARE INDEED IGNORANT FOR MAKING UNFOUNDED ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT THE PEOPLE....THAT......IMBECILE...IS INDEED INDICATIVE OF YOUR STUPIDITY

  • @djk28161

CalPoly - LMAO!!! What's the matter - your GED didn't get you entry into Pomona Tech?!?

Puhhhhlllllleeeeeeeeezzzzzzzeeeeee - there's not a singular cosmic chance that you have a 4 year college education - let alone one from a reputable school. LOLLLLLLLLLL

    Funny though!!!

  • @djk28161

Master's degree in education - LMAO!!!!!!

  • @MANHATTANBEEFMAN How do you intend to use your electronics technician degree....Fucknut?????Your ignorance is only superceded by your stupidity.....You are likely a Justin Bieber loving inbred bastard ....Descend to the depths of Hades where you and your kind belong.....Tech school educated fuckniut wanna be

  • @djk28161

I repeat - "Say NO to inbreeding!" '

Really, it's for the best. LMAO!!!

  • I personally can't stand this little pip-squeak but this song stands out as one of his very best - it should have done better imo.

  • This is almost a commercial for smoking lol.

  • Fuck VEVO seriously I am going to boycott that shit

  • Vert artistic. one of john's best

  • In my opinion one the greatest songs ever written fucking period.

  • This song/video is life itself.

  • Love John mellencamp music thanks

  • Great song. Videos a little weird but in a good way. Mellencamp why'd you go and cut your hair?

  • Mellencamp is the troubador of his generation.

  • Nice song...

  • Extraordinary!

  • I got to see John in concert at the Fargo Dome a few years ago. It was by far the best concert I've been to. He was such an amazing talent. this song was one of the performed, and the crowd was totally into it. John is without a doubt one of the greatest singer/song writers of our time!

  • Anyone else think this is his best song ever?

  • @TomFromJersey Rain on the scarecrow out does it in my opinion

  • @TomFromJersey That makes at least two of us

  • Vai col lissssioooo!!!

  • JC es lo máximo! Lástima que no se consiga un DVD decente. Si alguien sabe de alguno hágalo saber para comprarlo.

  • VAI COL LISCIOOOOOOO!!!!

  • human wheels

  • "this love who in my beating heart endures...assured by every sun that burns. The dust to which this flesh shall return...it is the ancient, dreaming dust of God." Renews my faith every time I hear it during these troubled times...as someone else said, you really need to listen to this one once in awhile!

  • Great song, video could've been better.

  • This one makes you think.

  • cmq l'acqua ke ce nel video è bagnata!!!!!!

  • OK, I am gonna stop watching vevo. Why is Justin Bieber always there on the side? I hate this kid.

  • @themooddisorders go to full screen then you don 't have to look at JB's skanky ass

  • Justin Bieber pop ups. Fucking hate it! Someone should pop that kid in the head

  • this video just doesn't really match the song, makes me kinda sick

  • I loved Scarecrow, but overall I think this was his best album.

  • I wish there was a video with the Rough Harvest version. It's a much better song...

  • The deepest, most thought-provoking piece Mellencamp has ever done.... Mandala Echo Tthe eternal wheel Of becoming Life upon the turning Death Upon the enacting Life Upon the burning Desire Upon the Joining God Upon the dissolving Dust Upon the dreaming Universe Ancient, new A cigarette for the pleasure And the pain A Psalm, a candle A Descent 'neath the waves A funeral In the rain
  • @richaj03 Agreed, I loved this song when it came out. I thought it was extremely insightful and had much emotional depth.

  • @richaj03 Agreed, I loved this song when it came out. I thought it was extremely insightful and had much emotional depth.

  • @richaj03 Agreed, I loved this song when it came out. I thought it was extremely insightful and had much emotional depth.

  • rules all hipsters for 20 years after this release

  • The version on "Rough Harvest" is even better. That album is some of his best. Very emotional and deep. I recommend you giving it a listen.

  • cazzo che ricordi!

  • Love Lisa Germano. She brought so much to the band.

  • La canzone di mai dire gol =)

  • A very good underrated Mellencamp song! I certainly don't hear it as often as Small Town or Little Pink Houses.

  • wow thats risque for 1993

  • Easily one of the best music videos ever.

  • Mai dire gol

  • @Kendel7 si grande!!!

  • @Kendel7 E' vero! Bellissima!!!

  • @Kendel7

    AHAHAH GRANDISSIMO!!!

  • This is life ...

  • As skyangel1965 said, I have to hear this song once a week.

    It is so beautiful.

  • I used "play it next" to play this in a bar the other night. The people starting screaming when it came on.

  • From the first time I heard this song, I couldnt help but be struck (pardon the pun) by how the drums are used metaphorically in this song. The simple, but powerful and precise drumming after, While the clock keeps the pace gives such a great sense of time and forward motion - a perfect compliment to the lyrics.

  • this could be his best song but so so many great songs hard to say

  • (^_^) Eargasm!

  • Comment removed

  • one of the few mellencamp songs that has really stood out and doesnt sound as dated as all the other shit he's put out.

this aside, the album with the violins from 1987 is still the best thing he's done

  • Fucking hell what a song!!,a brillant melody with a melodramatic feeling..

  • @3:28 That's Mickey Jackson, he was one of my substitute teachers many times!

  • Love Mellencamp! And hat's off to Mike Wenning, Greensburg, IN... the muscle man in the video! Great guy!

  • Love this video! It shows every walk of life and the diversity of this gr8 Nation. Thank God for Mellencamp because Big Brother don't recognize it!!!!

  • It's a great video. I loved that he always showed 'real' people in his videos.

  • real america living ,whites, blacks, latinos, gays and midgets, viva america.

  • charades, pop skill, water hyacinth! Think about it

  • John has some amazing ideas from the midwest...and beyond in other tracks

  • This song was based on John Cascella, the band's saxophone player, who died during the production of the album. Their friend dies, but they had to bare with it and keep making the album. John Mellencamp said it was weird how the wheels in the world just kept turning after they lost someone important to them, so the band made this song based that. That's why the video is so weird. It's about how everyone is experiencing their own "human wheels" turning, and it's different for everyone.

  • @Hippocampectomy Brilliant. I never knew that. I will tell you that I LOVED some4one very much during the time that "Human Wheels" came out in the mid-early 90's, and that I lost them shortly after...this song and "In the House of Stone and Light" still have a lot of meaning for me..thanx for the insight...chucky

  • Have to agree with those who love the song and loathe the video!
