This shows two things; how that no matter how many safety procautions they make, the start of a grand prix can always lead to a big accident, and also that the on-the-spot emergency crews and correct fire-extinguishing gear are invaluable at saving lives.

Ronnie died because it took 20 minutes before he got any help from the medical team. He was still conscious in the hospital, but died because bone marrow got to his bloodstream.

Both Americans to win the world title lost teammates in the race where they clinched the title. When Phil Hill won his title, Wolfgang Von Trips was killed. And yes, Peterson was expected to live but for the embolism that killed him.

From what I've read, Peterson's car was not the one on fire. Read his wiki. Sad, sad story. Mario wins the title when his teamate dies. Absolutely terrible.

Peterson actually was the one on fire, but his injuries from the crash weren't life-threatening. Both his legs were fractured in many places and they took him to the hospital expecting him to be OK after surgery. But some of the bone marrow from the fractures got into his bloodstream and killed him. :(

Actually, in those days that kind of thigh leg fractures were mostly fatal. Lethality was 75%. For precisely the reason you stated. I remember well that my first thought was "OMG, he's gonna die!" And he did. Regardless of press & hospital reports I really don't agree he was "expected" to live.
