This is one incredible song. Kind of reminds of 'In Held Twas In I'...the concept and all..the beginning, the segmentation ,the ending. Each musician doing something different yet sounding like one. Thanks to You tube these classics will be with us forever
perhaps the grandest Genesis song ever, and the highest version of that song here. The Seconds Out double album is a giant masterpiece dominated by Suppers Ready. In my opinion Phil Collins dominates the singing of Gabriel on this song by thousands of miles. The Seconds Out version of Suppers Ready is probably my favorite prog rock song of all time. The climactic moments of the song's end just blow me away with awe.
@bonzelite I'm with you there dude, this is on My 'Desert Island Discs@...and I'd be happy for it to be the only track! It has everything, ballad, rock, emotion, passion..
in this interpretation we can see an incredible work of efforts and dedication of genesis, dispense with the greatest RAEL , you can see a great energy and effusiveness, phil collins does a great job replacing peter although he was never going to compare but deserves my most elevated respect.
An amazing performance of an amazing piece of art rock. Bruford and Collins drumming together; magic. As much as love Gabriel's voice, Collins really sends shivers down my spine in this version from Seconds Out. Incredible stuff.
how come most people, judging by the comments on yt know what good music is all about, and yet, 99% of today music sucks ass, and STILL sells millions ??? i mean, i just don't get it.
Growing up in the 80's, I only credit my 2 older sisters for getting me into the good bands of the day, Genesis being one of them. Since my sisters were older than me, they both fortunately saw Genesis on tour often between 1980-1985, so they saw some good years of this band. I wish I got to see Phil and the boys, but it was out of my range, but I always loved this music, timeless as it was, and still is, I am so glad we have this youtube to watch it now!!
@wsperger nail on the head mate ,I saw Gabriel carried on stage in a white coffin at the six of the best gig in Milton Keynes bowl possibly the most amazing moment in my life ,because he had already left when I became a fan around Duke ,fave album trick or wind & wuthering all time fav moment is around new Jerusalem ,Phils version is more powerful & you can feel the pain & emotion ,strange cause peter wrote the words to that.
I simply love the fact that where Keith Emerson has a bottle of wine, Tony Banks has a glass of orange juice. Really quite reflective of their personalities...
probably only on this song did Brufords performance and style match with the feel and spirit of the band....along with Phil's huge epic version of Peter's vocal melody....as many people have noted it is different from the album cut.....but the overall effect came together in a large symphonic gospel release....only a cold person could not be deeply moved by the music...especially the last verse as they sing about the second coming....pure classical rock at it's peak
Bruford showboating? I think not. The thousands of (awesome) drum notes are Phil once he jumps back there after singing. I loved Bruford's drumming in this whole concert, it was art instead of merely function.
I can see why Bruford drove the rest of the band crazy on this tour. Mucking around, showing off. In a section of the song where the keyboard and bass should be featured, he races unnecessarily hither and yon on his set. It's a distraction. Yeah, Bill we know you're technically excellent--try playing with some feel! Guess he suffered at this point in his career from Yes-itis: confusing fast hands and musical self-absorbtion with genuine feel and structure.
@raelraven2 lol ur right to an extent but i mean cmon Yes were technically and emotionally brilliant songs like close to the edge and awaken, u cant say they dont have feel or structure.
@raelraven2 Thank you. Bruford tries to show up Collins throughout this entire concert, I'm so happy they got Chester Thompson on the second part of this tour, no show boating there =)
The reflective interlude (Between "Willow Farm" and "Apocalypse in 9/8" reminds me of something out of an RPG game for the SNES console. Maybe this is where they got their inspiration (as I did) :)
they are modern composers for the 70s-80s....same like what bach, beethoven etc did in the past, truly genesis can't be described as an ordinary band...they are professor in art tock music
@1zappa your funny, thats phil collins with that big beard, he's how i used to know him.i'm 42 been listening to this since i was 5, watch them straight through the years, best music i know, there is none like it. i give thanks to tony banks, the behind the scenes keyboardist who wrote most of the music. peter was great but tony wrote the lamb and just about everything else
This has been my favorite song since my husband introduced it to me twenty years ago. It's a little silly of me that I still have to remind myself to breathe when I hear it, but that's the effect it has on me every single time. Thank you, Genesis, for giving us a truly awesome musical experience that never gets old.
INCREDIBLE performance-this is even better than the Seconds Out version and the epic film clips always give me the goose bumps. Now go ahead and watch their "Entangled" performance from the same concert - it further highlights their versatility....
best song ever! Collins really does it justice. Wish Genesis would play this again live again - preferably with Gabriel, but I'd be done with a reprise of the above. Especially is Bruford rocked drums again. I think he retired from public performance though? Not sure...
these guys are the most incredible song writers in my opinion. Gabriel has the most powerful voice that sends shivers down your spine. Just a magical band. These were the years that they were at there best. Gabriel, Hackett, Collins, Rutherford and Banks. Unbelievable musicians. Im only 17 so, they are way past my time. But my dad was a huge fan when he was my age and he introduced me to these guys and im so glad he did.
i know exactly what you mean. they're the end result of 5 master musicians in a studio together. no band has ever been able to replicate their own original music like this. a master band like this comes around maybe once every few decades. im only 15 and i hate today's shit noise people call music. like 'lil' wayne. the music industry has gone to real shit, you dont hear musical genius like this anymore on the radio.
@limelight707 for those born 60 or so or earlier and have seen them in concert in the mod 70s...the memories must be outstanding...those times and singers will never come back
@PABBLUSHA1 I agree 100%. These guys are pure genius and in my opinion the ultimate song writers. To write stuff like this takes talent, not like what we here today, music will never be this good again.
@limelight707 uh, that's Collins singing. Credit to Phil he sends shivers down your spine, though. He is a remarkably good substitute (and has better range), but Genesis is of course only whole with Gabriel.
even tho genesis was 28 years before my time i have to say they are in my top 5 favorit bands of all time and this song shook my soul when i first heard it on the Seconds out Albulm
Greatest song ever written in my humble opinion and I know it's heresy but I came across the Seconds Out version first and it gets lift off over the lumpy studio version although you know this is very much Peter Gabriel's work of art, truly brilliant!
With all respect to Phil Collins, hes not Peter Gabriel and hasnt his carisma on stage... He sings ok but not with that unic flavor Peter was able to give to the music. But hes a real great drummer and songwriter of his own!
I've admired all of Genesis' career, but I like Collins singing the Gabriel material more than Peter. Phil just has a more dynamic voice. COLLINS FTW!
@whalestail1955 Chester Thompson DESTROYS Bill Bruford. Bruford only toured with Genesis because he was available and Phil couldn't think of any other British drummers that he really knew about at the time.
@whalestail1955 Great holistic bands are---Melting Euphoria, Ozric Tentacles, Gong, Mother Gong, Acid Mother's Gong, Magma, Aphrodities Child, Jade Warrior, Steve Tibbetts, Patrick Bernard, Lost at Last, Larry Coryell, Shakti, Oregon, Kazumi Watanabe, Toninho Horta, Egberto Gismonti, Eat Static, System 7, Lisa Gerrard, Dead Can Dance, Magma, Sphongle, Bill Laswell, Stomu Yamashta, Here and Now band, Steve Hillage.
Peter Gabriel wrote this and was inspired by a night he spent with his first wife, Jill, at her parent's house. Gabriel believes Jill became possessed by a spirit, which gave him the starting point for a song about the battle between good and evil.
Were the fighter jets, bombings, and Nuclear explosions footage added by you lies112, or from their concert footage; as if shown on some projection? Just wondering, great performance; surely I would wake those idiots up lol ;)
How can that woman be sleeping at a time like this?I was at that show and on the edge of my seat ,I might add..Does anyone know where I can obtain a copy of this DVD concert from 1976?
I honestly think Genesis sounds way better without Gabriel. The flute part played on keyboard's amazing, and Collins' voice kicks the most butt! He was destined to be the vocalist.
I disagree with you fully, mRtReMeLo. Genesis' music was amazing with Gabriel, and their material after he left was sub-par, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, Phil Collins has a fantastic voice, but Genesis was nothing in comparison after Gabriel's departure. Without him, they're just not Genesis anymore.
mRteMeLo has no idea what he's talking about.....Genesis w/o Peter evolved into the Phil Collins self indulgent pop shit iconic band I saw last year. No vision, no passion, no balls. This version of Supper's Ready and the following two tours in '75 and '77 marked the end of the REAL GENESIS. With "and then there were three" it became the Phil Collins band........ Anyone who had seen Genesis while Peter was out front would never ever had made such a silly (bordering on ignorant) statement!
Honestly, I could NOT agree with you more. I'm way too young to have ever experienced Genesis in their true form, but I comprehend their glory during the Gabriel era, and it sickens me to think that there are people 3x my age who know Genesis by overrated keyboard songs like "Land of Confusion" rather than something amazing like "Dancing with the Moonlight Knight". Phil Collins has a great voice, and he is the man on drums, but his direction after Peter Gabriel left quickly took a nose dive.
I agree as well. After Gabreil left, they slowly turned into a soft rock/pop band. Not that they're not talented musicians but they were tight when Peter Gabriel in the group.
Well, actually,if you go to Wikipedia and punch in "Supper's Ready",the whole premise of the song is about Spiritual Warfare from beginning to end with some mythical ingredients added for color. But it is about Jesus and His Triumph over the Antichrist(coming soon to a Universe near you...)
there just isn't a better song than this, in whatever reincarnation. I was at school when it first came out and I'm as old as Father Tierisias now. Brilliant
Bruford really gives this version dimension with his trademark pong snare and gap filling style. It fits almost perfectly with Genesis laid back yet technical feel as opposed to Crimson's flakiness or Yes' being overly clever.
Actually, FoxontheRoxxx, Gabriel himself swears he was "not drinking or drugging" when he had a vision of his wife's face changing, and that was the inspiration for the song--that hidden and mysterious forces lie all around us and we are only part players in a grand drama.
Unless he recanted, that's his story. Though I wouldn't rule out a flashback...it was the 70s after all....
My best memory of this song is playing the Seconds Out version very loud in the dark for a friend in college that had never heard it before. We were a bit drunk and listened to the song straight through. He was actually overcome a bit at the end. He loved music but was more of a jazz/pop guy (he turned me on to Pat Metheny).
Amicalement,...
Saying it's shit is a bit rough. Face Value was really good. long long way to go from no Jacket Required was brilliant. And, all members had commercial "crappy" success. Remember Mike & the Mechanics? How about Peter G.'s Sledgehammer. Tony Banks had a very unsuccessful commercial effort as well. Phil just just did great at it. He's also good at the artistic stuff. Give the cat some credit.
To think of the awesome talent of this band without the need for mind altering drugs. The most potent stuff was " a little weed and Earl Grey" to quote Mike Rutherford.
As much as I enjoy Gabriels voice on this song i happen to like phil better on it....my view is he adds that bit of freakiness at 'Apocalypse in 9/8' and his volume, brilliant! All ive ever heard was how phil screwed up the songs originally performed by Gab's, but i disagree he can do it just as well.
I graduated high school in 1976 but was never as "herbed up" then as the people at 4:27. ;-/
Seriously, this is a tremendous version of Supper's Ready -- similar to the way they played it the six or so times I've seen them do it live, which is to say, note-for-note perfect!
And I don't mind the added video; it breaks up the stage shots -- there wasn't much creative camera use anyway -- and you have to admit, this song has an ominous tone to it, which kind of fits the visuals.
phil had to be the singer because they did'n find anybody to replace peter.... and then they also blamed phil to sound too much like peter.... One of the most famous sentences is that: phil sounded like gabriel even better then gabriel....
Whoever decided to interject video footage into the concert footage is definitely not a fan of either music or Genesis. I attended this tour in 1976, my first Genesis concert. More memories could be relived if not for someone else's "artistic enterpratation". Just another side note from this concert I distinctly remember, Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford sat for almost the entire performance. Not many bands would have the confidence to perform so exposed.
Wow... this version blew me away.. don't get me wrong, all credit goes to peter gabriel but Phil Collins does a superb job singing this song. There is crazy energy in this live performance. Wish i was alive during that time to see that concert
This is a part of the "In Concert 1976" - Film (officially released 2007 as bonus material of the "A Trick of the Tail"-Remaster on SACD/ DVD (Europe) or CD / DVD (US) ), which contains:
I Know what I like
Fly on a Windshield
Carpet Crawlers
Entangled
Cinema Show Part II (Instrumental Part)
Supper's Ready Part II (Apocalypse & As Sure as Eggs is Eggs)
Quite a Jesus look Phil's got going on in this song! I've been listening to this song for 25 years on "Seconds Out"; nice to finally get to see it (and yes, I realize it's a different tour in the video).
I'm an iconoclast, but I love the Gabriel-era stuff when it's sung by Phil.
I think the beard suited Phil then, considering he must of thought of himself as some sort of Demi-God going from drummer to lead singer of a stadium filling band
I'm not sure I'd use the term "stadium filling band" to describe Genesis circa 1975. We may love them, but if you can find Armando Gallo's excellent book on the early history of the band, they pretty much were a quarter million pounds in the hole and not selling anywhere near what bands like Yes or ELP were selling. They did pretty well in the UK and Italy, and that was about it.
Funny you mention Italy. I've just been in North Italy for a vacation and at some gas stations you can get old Genesis CD's like Selling England, Trick of The Tale or bootleg compilations :-) I've never seen Genesis CD's being sold at gas stations before.
XD he was shit scared of singing cause hed never done frontman vocals before, in one of his songbooks he says he never actually took the mic off the stand because it became his security blanket he could hide behind when he wasnt behind the drums! tops to phil lotta courage and guts!
Phil does a fantastic job on this piece, both as singer and as drummer. All due credit to Peter Gabriel who co-created this glorious masterpiece & also performed it wonderfully. IMO, the best thing ever by Genesis.
Phil´s work on A Trick Of The Tail is breath-taking, again as singer and drummer. Worth checking out.
Two different eras, two different songs- but this is an utter classic. Phil had the stones to make this song his own- even though the band was in a radically different direction by then. Banks is one of the great intrumentalists of the rock era. F'ing BRILLIANT!
Musical Box brings the Three Sides Live show back to LIFE! See them live, new dates! Philadelpia, New York, Toronto and more! Check out their website! turnitonagainDOTcom they are amazing!!
Nah. Most of 'em are doin that sway-to-the-music things with their arms. One guy, though, is playing the 'air drums' in a bit of an over-exaggerated fashion -- looks more like he's chopping wood or something. Half of 'em are stoned out of their wits.
fuck i wish the band would release all the footage from this show instead of all these clips and half songs. that is so irritating i might commit suicide.
also, people keep talking about how they buried Steve Hackett in the mix on Seconds Out, but I hear him just fine. overall, I find that mix to be rather poor, with everything sounding too distant and certain aspects of the drums getting buried as well. perhaps that perception started when Tony Banks joked about it in the Genesis: A History documentary??
I'm just getting into Genesis and it's this period that interests me the most. I can't believe the BUTCHER JOB they did w/ premature the fade-out on the version from Seconds Out.
I would KILL to have a dvd copy of this show --- does anyone know where to find it??!!
i've got the original laserdisc video of this one. seeing it on a computer doesn't compare to the magic of watching it on a big screen with a good sound system.
Same for me,but this one is a goosebump maker.Intense vocals. Also,Phil on live Musical Box performances rival any that Peter has done-extremely powerful.
I love Genesis, but don't think Phil can hold a candle to Peter on the material the Peter originally recorded...listen to Peter belt out the live ending of Supper's Ready vs. Phil's watery version (I saw this tour and love the band, and love Peter too, no disrespect intended)
well...different strokes for different folks I guess.....IMO Phil sings the song whilst Peter struggles to hit the notes at all. No comparison is right...Phil saved this tune:)
I so love Peter Gabriel, but this version just blew me away bigtime!!!! Phil Collins is an excellent talent and I love the way he brings a different beauty to this song. Each member of this band is pure gold, and this version of Suppers Ready is so good, I have watched it 6 times in a row!!!! Thank you lies 112, this is so much fun!
This is one incredible song. Kind of reminds of 'In Held Twas In I'...the concept and all..the beginning, the segmentation ,the ending. Each musician doing something different yet sounding like one. Thanks to You tube these classics will be with us forever

@PABBLUSHA1 I agree 100%. These guys are pure genius and in my opinion the ultimate song writers. To write stuff like this takes talent, not like what we here today, music will never be this good again.

@limelight707 I saw Genesis 8 times by my 18th birthday. I prefer Peter over Phil when it comes to vocals, but Phil put Genesis in high gear.
1howlinwolf 1 year ago 5
@limelight707 uh, that's Collins singing. Credit to Phil he sends shivers down your spine, though. He is a remarkably good substitute (and has better range), but Genesis is of course only whole with Gabriel.

@whalestail1955 Chester Thompson DESTROYS Bill Bruford. Bruford only toured with Genesis because he was available and Phil couldn't think of any other British drummers that he really knew about at the time.

Peter Gabriel wrote this and was inspired by a night he spent with his first wife, Jill, at her parent's house. Gabriel believes Jill became possessed by a spirit, which gave him the starting point for a song about the battle between good and evil.

veintemil20 2 years ago
I honestly think Genesis sounds way better without Gabriel. The flute part played on keyboard's amazing, and Collins' voice kicks the most butt! He was destined to be the vocalist.
mRtReMeLo 2 years ago 3
I disagree with you fully, mRtReMeLo. Genesis' music was amazing with Gabriel, and their material after he left was sub-par, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, Phil Collins has a fantastic voice, but Genesis was nothing in comparison after Gabriel's departure. Without him, they're just not Genesis anymore.
Spenc2010 2 years ago
mRteMeLo has no idea what he's talking about.....Genesis w/o Peter evolved into the Phil Collins self indulgent pop shit iconic band I saw last year. No vision, no passion, no balls. This version of Supper's Ready and the following two tours in '75 and '77 marked the end of the REAL GENESIS. With "and then there were three" it became the Phil Collins band........ Anyone who had seen Genesis while Peter was out front would never ever had made such a silly (bordering on ignorant) statement!
tongvabear 2 years ago
Honestly, I could NOT agree with you more. I'm way too young to have ever experienced Genesis in their true form, but I comprehend their glory during the Gabriel era, and it sickens me to think that there are people 3x my age who know Genesis by overrated keyboard songs like "Land of Confusion" rather than something amazing like "Dancing with the Moonlight Knight". Phil Collins has a great voice, and he is the man on drums, but his direction after Peter Gabriel left quickly took a nose dive.
Spenc2010 2 years ago
@Spenc2010 Genesis is a keyboard centric band because Banks writes most of the music. He has from the start.

Bruford really gives this version dimension with his trademark pong snare and gap filling style. It fits almost perfectly with Genesis laid back yet technical feel as opposed to Crimson's flakiness or Yes' being overly clever.

fukkin awesome song
FoxOnTheRoxxx 3 years ago

Amicalement,...
dannyfashion01 3 years ago
theres no denying genesis best material was from the gabriel era,but phil does it justice, shame his solo sfuff was absolutely shit....
ste2201 3 years ago
Saying it's shit is a bit rough. Face Value was really good. long long way to go from no Jacket Required was brilliant. And, all members had commercial "crappy" success. Remember Mike & the Mechanics? How about Peter G.'s Sledgehammer. Tony Banks had a very unsuccessful commercial effort as well. Phil just just did great at it. He's also good at the artistic stuff. Give the cat some credit.

phil sings this better than gabriel,he said it himself, best british band ever!!!!
ste2201 3 years ago 2
To think of the awesome talent of this band without the need for mind altering drugs. The most potent stuff was " a little weed and Earl Grey" to quote Mike Rutherford.
mikelmart 3 years ago

Thanks.
TwelfthFloorPhenom 3 years ago 2
phil had to be the singer because they did'n find anybody to replace peter.... and then they also blamed phil to sound too much like peter.... One of the most famous sentences is that: phil sounded like gabriel even better then gabriel....
iv3shf 3 years ago 4
Whoever decided to interject video footage into the concert footage is definitely not a fan of either music or Genesis. I attended this tour in 1976, my first Genesis concert. More memories could be relived if not for someone else's "artistic enterpratation". Just another side note from this concert I distinctly remember, Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford sat for almost the entire performance. Not many bands would have the confidence to perform so exposed.
mikelmart 3 years ago
The video footage was thought of and produced by the band, it was in the seconds out Cinema showings in the late 70's.

Quite a Jesus look Phil's got going on in this song! I've been listening to this song for 25 years on "Seconds Out"; nice to finally get to see it (and yes, I realize it's a different tour in the video).

capsfans6366 3 years ago 2
And I love the drumming by Yes' Bill Bruford here :)
sounds132 3 years ago
I think the beard suited Phil then, considering he must of thought of himself as some sort of Demi-God going from drummer to lead singer of a stadium filling band
JRStone29 3 years ago
I'm not sure I'd use the term "stadium filling band" to describe Genesis circa 1975. We may love them, but if you can find Armando Gallo's excellent book on the early history of the band, they pretty much were a quarter million pounds in the hole and not selling anywhere near what bands like Yes or ELP were selling. They did pretty well in the UK and Italy, and that was about it.
capsfans6366 3 years ago
Funny you mention Italy. I've just been in North Italy for a vacation and at some gas stations you can get old Genesis CD's like Selling England, Trick of The Tale or bootleg compilations :-) I've never seen Genesis CD's being sold at gas stations before.

Yeah also... Phil hated the idea of being the singer. He'd much stay behind the drums. He's only the singer cos they couldn't find anyone else.
renoo27 3 years ago
XD he was shit scared of singing cause hed never done frontman vocals before, in one of his songbooks he says he never actually took the mic off the stand because it became his security blanket he could hide behind when he wasnt behind the drums! tops to phil lotta courage and guts!
SpenceTheEchidna 3 years ago
Phil does a fantastic job on this piece, both as singer and as drummer. All due credit to Peter Gabriel who co-created this glorious masterpiece & also performed it wonderfully. IMO, the best thing ever by Genesis.
Phil´s work on A Trick Of The Tail is breath-taking, again as singer and drummer. Worth checking out.
God bless!!!

Two different eras, two different songs- but this is an utter classic. Phil had the stones to make this song his own- even though the band was in a radically different direction by then. Banks is one of the great intrumentalists of the rock era. F'ing BRILLIANT!

albaynian777 4 years ago
also, people keep talking about how they buried Steve Hackett in the mix on Seconds Out, but I hear him just fine. overall, I find that mix to be rather poor, with everything sounding too distant and certain aspects of the drums getting buried as well. perhaps that perception started when Tony Banks joked about it in the Genesis: A History documentary??
