In my opinion, "Fat City" is a criminally underrated sports film. The direction, writing, and acting are all phenomenal. Stacy Keach gives a fantastic performance that hardly anyone really talks about anymore. It is my second favorite sports film besides "Raging Bull".
raging bull 1st. i mean, seriously rockys awesome, but childplay compared to it, even though raging bull is not so much a sports movie as a portrait of a man's life, his jealousy, etc.
well rocky, raging bull, and bull durham will always be up there. the sandlot, like the nostalgia critic once said, is an american classic. people hate what was done to the natural but it was great to me. the wrestler was good but predictable. slap shot, chariots of fire, and caddyshack are up there too
Field of dreams almost has to come in on this list. As corny as it may have been, James Earl Jones' speech about baseball is a great moment in cinema, imo.
in no order: -Pride of the Yankees -Hoosiers -Bull Durham -Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner -The Hustler -The Natural -This Sporting Life -Chariots of Fire -Rocky -Raging Bull
if i were Richard Roeper. i'd get the number of that chick... He's a good looking single guy and he can get that chick easily... before he was really a nerd looking guy, but as the show progress, he slowly improved his fasion sensibilities...
god that Jillian chick is hot... plus she has a very cute voice
5. Fields Of Dreams - Speaking as a guy, we all know why this movie makes such a connection with the male species. We all wish we could play ball with our dad back during his prime.
4. Bull Durham - Speaking as a guy, we all know why this movie makes such a connection with the male species. We all wish we could ball with Susan Sarandon back during her prime.
3. Hoop Dreams - The ups & downs of the real lives of two promising high school basketball players.
2. A League Of Their Pwn - Tho this film focuses on women in baseball, for me, it truly captures the feeling that best reflex of why this sport is truly an American pasttime. It shows that no matter how the political world events may be turbulently transpiring, we all can just go to a game, escape for a little while, & then, hopefully return into the real world with our spirits a little higher & our perspectives a little bit clearer. B'cuz, as we all know by now, there is no crying in baseball.
So Hoosiers, Field of Dreams, Raging Bull, The Natural, and Rocky.........
Good picks, don't have any problems with that list...... I might've taken a football movie like Remember the Titans or Brian's Song over Raging Bull, but they're really all great.....
@xContaminatedx it's funny, I think Raging Bull is easily the best movie that involves sports, but I never really thought of it as a sport's movie if that makes sense
@Comictalent makes a lot of sense. but it is a sports movie when you think about it. the life of la motta in the ring expands into his life in general

Hmmmm... I don't agree with any of his choices. Guess that's why they make movies for all different types of people.

Raging Bull is so much better than Rocky. It's one of my all time favorites, Rocky is not.

the wrestler, raging bull, and million dollar baby are the best sports movies i've ever scene. but then again i havent seen alot of them.
still hose three are tied for me as the best because they're not happy endings. they're sad, tragic and REAL endings

Yeah Field Of Dreams was awesome.
I used to always ask my Dad for a catch but he told me to shut up and mow the law.
Long story short I mowed the lawn a lot.
ramblinhaze 2 years ago
I feel for you. I never played catch with my dad, but it wasn't his fault. It wasn't allowed during prison visitation hours.

You can read Richard Roeper's columns, three times a week, on the Chicago Sun Times. They are about "everything," not just movies and they are great.
