  • There are many comments on the difference between the vocal style of Libera and other boys´choirs. My opinion: The boys of Libera primarily are singing according to the American taste.

  • history and tradition of each area seems to be the biggest influential factor. The Vienna Boys from the 60's through 80's have the sound that most Germanic and Austrian boy choirs are trying to emulate, and for good reason, whereas St. Pauls, Westminster, Kings and a few others from England have been so solid in their tradition of consistent use of headvoice throughout the entire range, that they have perfected their own style, and continue with what they do best.

  • With England being much more heavily focused(although not exclusive) on a straighter tone with a more floating use of the head voice mechanism, whereas the boys of many German and Austrian boy choirs are taught to sing with a bit more weight to their sound throughout their whole range, ESPECIALLY in their mid and lower ranges(you will notice a distinct chest/head voice mix in the altos voices, and most of the sopranoes). The two different styles are based on preference of the director, though

  • As to the comment by bestpi, Libera sounds very good on recordings, but what you must realize is that they have a LOT of artificial effects thrown into the mix with them. I heard them live this past summer, and was pretty disappointed. Not that they weren't singing well, there was just nothing behind the sound. As far as actual vocal training goes for boys with unchanged voices, it seems that there are two main schools of thought that we can base on geographical locations(England and Germany

I think they were the best Boys Choir!

  • I really like this unusual piece and am surprised at the 'Western' sound.

Tölzer Knabenchor ranks with the best from wherever in Europe. This knabenchor

    is very versatile.

    Aled

  • in love with them!!!!!!!!♥

  • i think that the japanese folk song is being more recognized everywhere. my director was trying to give us insight abt. it before we started and she said that it is unique and known for its contrast, most people would never think of the unique harmony and the different uses of poco. pianissimo and poco. fortissimo

  • It listened to this song, and it was deeply impressed.

  • I'm happy to see Japanese folk song is loved even outside Japan:-)

  • I was impressed.

  • Very compelling

  • This is one of the better tolz. They certainly aren't libera but this one is the least angy sounding from Germany. Most everything sounds like they are yelling at each other. This is at least mellow.

  • Well, it's one thing to have a preference for ethereal voices. It's another to be comparing apples and oranges. Libera does very well with what it sings, but Toelzer Knabenchor is excellent in its own arena. I can't imagine a Libera soloist singing opera, say, a part in Mozart's Apollo et Hyacinthus with an orchestra behind him, just as it might be odd hearing TKC sing Voca Me. There's a different vocal production that's best suited to the kind of music that is sung.

  • Thank you for clearing that up. Does Germany have Libera type choir program?

  • I don't know that Germany has something akin to Libera, but there are German boychoirs that emphasize more on producing a blended, smooth sound. One fine example is the Windsbacher Knabenchor.

  • You don't happen to have any clips from Windsbacher Knabenchor do you?

  • Go to their website windsbacher knabenchor , than click on videos (vertical menu)..wait..after a few seconds or a minute you'll see 3 pictures on the right, they lead you to 3 clips...But be warned they are not libera.

  • But this is not windbacher, ths Toelzer knabenchor

  • It was a discussion about the style of german choirs sounding angry and Windsbacher Knabenchor has a different approach (like british choirs), creating a more harmonious (sp) sound (quite the opposite of the Tölzers where everyone is a soloist, and boys even singing in opera-style)

  • My brother sang in both, first in the tölzer and then in the windsbacher knabenchor. The tölzer had more focus on the individual voice, but the windsbacher manly did practises with the whole choire. But the windsbacher demanded alot more time from the boys, with no regard for the school, or healthy sleeping times. The pressure on the boys was alot firmer. My parents thought that the windsbacher are exploiting the children and took my brother out of the choire

  • Beringer has quite a reputation (You know what I mean) ..I think your parents made a wise decision...(I haven't got any personalexperience, but followed the news and investigations.)Why did your brother left the Toelzers and choose the Windsbachers instead?

  • Our Family moved from Munich to near Windsbach.

  • You may want to check this one out before claiming apples and oranges however. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRZ0gx-oQGc shows clearly that classical does not need to sound angry.

  • When a song is sung about the wrath of God on judgment day, which is what Dies Irae is about, the ability to add passion and sing fortissimo are an asset. By your terminology, possibly you could even call the desired effect "angry", if only in the context of Mozart's Requiem.

  • I am always moved by Choral music..German and sad sounding slavic/russian esp. Mormon Tabernancle and US Airforce Choral music make my chest feel tight. Love it

  • Oh my goodness! How wonderful they are..I cried...

  • How cute they are! Song is also touchful.
