Actually it's not that bad...there are four main styles of oboe playing (American, French, German, and Viennese). this just happens to be the German style of reeds. It sounds a lot better than other German oboists I've heard. Berlin is great (Albrecht Mayor, Hansjorg Schellenberger), but Viennese is just awful (same style of playing for centuries with little change). The one with Bernstein conducting the Vienna Philharmonic, I don't know who the oboist is, but it sounds absolutely horrifying.
