make it an independent system without hooking it up to a ds.(throw the guts in it) Have a separate controller too. Say a snes controller, its got the L and R shoulder, abxy and D-pad. if u have to switch back and forth already why not.

with this the pictochat keyoard is bigger that way it will be easier to type with your fingers just like on an iphone. This is also good for other games with a virtual keyboard.
