i started with grappling, then jumped into boxing, then kickboxing... i was a football player and powerlifter in my younger days so now i got limited flexibility in my legs... i fear muay thai cause of the hard shin bones you mentioned earlier... any advise from someone whose been in the ring for a dude with a little less seasoning?
@eminemweloveyou Every fighter has their own style, Danny didnt mind getting hit a few times to throw one hard one of his own. But ultimately, that is a question for you to ask Danny.
@iApna ... wearing head gear always made me feel like THURMEN MERMAN from bad santa... i got more black eyes with head gear vs. without head gear..... maybe its because im no good or maybe it made my melon a bigger target lol
@analagony - We don't wear headgear in our Thai class during sparring. Apparently you have better chance of getting head injuries with them. I'm not sure why exactly, it could be the weight. Plus its harder to slip and be evasive with the extra weight. Better off just wearing 14-16oz gloves for sparring. Although when my opponents wear those thin cloth shin pads and kick my head it really wakes me up. But I guess its my fault for getting hit right?
@analagony - Oh yes I completely agree! Hard sparring and entering the ring is a definite must. Its difficult to find out where you're at with training unless you fight.
So much for sticking and moving... ;-) Both guys show great power and ability to take damage though. I do muay thai, and I can't imagine doing round after round taking that much punishment on a consistent basis. That was only 30 seconds! Props on the heart and cajones of these two!
i always hurt my shin when the opponent blocks my kick... wich is the point but how do i make sure i wrap my shin up or what ever so i wont hurt myself as bad
look at all the pads the guys do have on!!! do you know why....... that is to prtoect the body! yes to protect it!! it is BETTER to protect it durring training and go into a fight UNINJURED than to get all banged up in practice! the guys you see are very seasoned pros! and small injuries add up! if they trained without pads it would not help them at all!! it break their bodies down before the fight and they wouldn't be 100% in the fight. this is only parctice but this IS HOW the BEST TRAIN!!!!!
The best? Hmm..I've never seen Peter Aerts, Ramon Dekkers, Ernesto Hoost, Andy Souwer, Albert Kraus etc... wearing that much padding, aside from double shinguards, during sparring. And believe me they spar a LOT harder then those 2.
not neccassarily, your movement might confuse some. I would only say a few things you might like to do: keep your chin down, dont take any leg kicks (move or block) and work more on defense against knees and punches because Im assuming you already know how to attack. Correct defense, I think, is the most important thing to lear while migrating through fight sports. Hope this helped :)
Not to put you down or nothing man.. But Tae Kwon do Kicks are no where near as powerful as Muay Thai Kicks also you'll have to work on form alot more because most Tae Kwon do schools only teach One day balance and don't teach you where to properly place your other leg while kicking to get the most power and still be very well balanced out of it.
@rawbulks a good round kick from any style will ko if the timing is right.Thai style has the most power for sure due to the mechanics of it.1000 kicks builds kicking endurance not power, would 1000 pressups increase your bench press? For someone with good tech do much less kicks full power.A novice will benefit from higher reps to build tech which at that stage will build power.
I'd definetily also say that you MUST think of where your hands are, and by that, I mean up at your temple! Not the TKD type stance with the hands by the waist or chest, in MT, you gotta keep em up there ALL THE TIME! Good luck!
no...I did the same as you. But I basically had to relearn everything. The way they kick in Muay Thai is the opposite of TKD and it just feels like two different sports. I started sparring a month into it.
That's pretty stupid. From what I heard, Thais never go full power during sparring. It's not about who's the strongest, it's about improving your technique and "playing" with the other person. Which these guys clearly aren't doing. I can already see a huge number of mistakes these guys are doing.
@mrjost55 theyre not going hard and are wearing enough protection ,but yeah theyre not too great looking. The reason the thais dont go hard is because they fight so often and cant afford to be injured. They go full out on clinch work and with the pad man. When fights are less often youd need to be sparring fairly hard quite often as full speed and power throws the timing off if yo havent been doing it.
@kyokushinfighter78 Hmm.. Sparring with a pro aint fun. They hit hard. Also if you do a nice move on them, they will hold a grudge and really try to hit you even harder.
@Enderwiggan1 i made that jump about 13 years ago from being on the irish tkd team to getting beat up in every spar, more ego bruising than anything else. The most important difference is the boxing,I picked up the kicking really quickly .For months I went home with a headache from headshots until I learned basic boxing defence.I did tons of tech work with my friend who was a boxer in between sessions and eventually copped on.
LOL .. no, Danny is actually wearing a surf suit; his way of forcing his body to make weight. I never tried it myself but can imagine what it would feel like.

This is bs. They are moving slow as f**k, have more pads on than a hockey goalie and never keep their hands up, dont block kicks the list goes on.

I practice Tae Kwon Do and Muay Thai. I have seen people KO'd in TKD and I have seen people KO'd in Muay Thai.
If a technique is practiced enuf tmes per day- say 500 or 1000 round kicks- both styles kicks have potential to KO opponents
