omg her boob was about to fall out. That being said, I really don't know much about opera ( except Arrigo Boito's Mefistofeles) ,but I have grown to really like Dessay. I keep hearing about Sutherland but she sounds too matronly and schoolmarmish for my tastes.
@rossyxan yes, donizetti wrote this aria for glass harmonica firstable but he get angry with the "glass harmonicist" so he dicided to transcribe it for flute.
I found it very interesting that she wanted the glass harmonica. I saw her March 19 performance in HD and she did not sing along with the flute either, which was a letdown, neither was the glass harmonica available like on this video, but her performance was quite good.
I find it strange that to highlight any contemporary singer, it has to say she is better than Anna Netrebko.
I have seen comments that Elina Garanca sings better and is prettier than Anna. Nino Machdaise if it is a true soprano, and Anna is not. Now I see that to exalt NatalieDessay have to say that her.
But something has to be Anna, that anybody may have reference her to say that other is better.
Its all about the performer's interpretation. Opera isn't about every note being perfect. As an orchestral opera player i know how every night is different from the one before. It doesn't mean its incorrect! She intentionally doesn't sing every note with the flute because thats prob just how she wanted to do it on the night at that moment.
@ferrykalos There is no flute because in the orginial score it called for glass harmonica, but Donizetti got into a fight with the glass harmonist and he left on the premier night so Donizetti gave the part to the flute.
I wish I could sing Lucia, but I'm a bass. :( BUT for audition for our fine arts academy I sung it 2 octaves down. :) It was cheating but I'm obssesed with the aria. The judges were impressed though.
@violinistx100 indeed! I am a bass-baritone and i can understand you! It seems so unfair that all those spectacular, acrobatic, sweet and ethereal arias were only written for soprano :( I also try to sing in my range many famous coloratura soprano arias xD But dont tell anyone!!
@violinistx100 Well, Lucia loves Edgardo, who is from a rival clan. Edgar goes off to war and they send love letters to each other but they get intercepted by her brother who disapproves. He then forges a letter to Lucia saying that Edgar either doesn't love her or died... can't remember which! Either way she's distraught and then her brother gets her to marry another man and just after she signs the document Edgardo bursts in. She goes mad, kills her husband and dies. Interval...
Natalie Dessay, in her continued progress towards greater artistry, still doesn't know what opera is about
In recent years, Dessay's top notes have been shrieky and metallic, cold, effortful, and generally unpleasant to the ear. The disdain she has for top notes is therefore understandable. She tends to compensate with buffoonish histrionics, overacting the pieces of meaning she gleans from the (mostly bankrupt) text.
@thecelticspirit it was not good for her.....the flute helps to mantain the line in tune and the flute cadenza in the end helps to understand the end of the first part of the scene and asks aplauses.........she didnt did the Eb.....and the public just aplauded in the end of the ACT.
See the same MET section whit Joan Sutherland and the reaction of the public....
At 3:33, she leaves off one pair of notes, and therefore leaves the flute hanging.
I actually mostly like her performance here. Someone said she can't sing bel canto, but I find her line very good.
The scream doesn't work for me. She screams because she suddenly recognizes Enrico, and runs away from him, but then almost immediately she addresses him again as Edgardo. I don't think even a crazy person would do this. Of course, it was dramatic.
I never saw the Ardon gl'incensi (only listened to it) the last part of the mad Scene, of course! It was great to look at this for the first time and in HQ ;-) XDDDD
Even though I know the opera and the words, it is great to have the subtitles. I think it would be great if also put the spanish subtitles. Just a suggestion. Thanks for this video.
Oh! Im very sorry! I though you had the Italian arias dvd and you had the option to change subtitles! You are very kind! Sorry again, im embarrased now!
No prob, really, no need to apologize :) I have indeed the Italian arias CD, where the mad scene from the MET is included, but there's no subtitles in it. I had to create the Enlish ones, by finding translation on the Internet, and by translating myself at some point. But I'm not good enough in Spanish to do this by my own...
Huuu... your comment is marked as spam. Did you do anything ? ^^ Anyway, if you can give me the Spanish translation, no prob to create subtitles then :)
Well, every performance is unique, don't you think ^^ ? Just take a look to La Fille du Régiment : Vienna, London or NY are not quite the same, even though it's the same production.
There's nothing that "should" or "shouldn't" happen there because that's a cadenza. It's become VERY COMMON that there's a duet between her and a flute - but being a cadenza, there's no written part. Sometimes editors will make their own, but traditionally singers make their own.
Esta escena hubiera sido perfecta si no le hubieran eliminado la parte de la cadenza con la flauta : (

Just sayin'.
Now the second. . . is first.

From 4:03 there should be flute (or armonica) in duet with Lucia. What happened?
prionse 3 years ago
They did it a capella, in order to enhance the tragedy of her madness. I think it's on purpose.

Yes, you're right, but I saw Netrebko this Saturday and I was suprised when I heard Dessay singing without flute/armonica.

That's the fun of cadenzas. You never know what you'll hear. They're really an expression of the performer.
