Sad to hear that such a large bowling center went down, not that long after it hosted professional events like this. In Topeka, we lost another center just a few months ago. The city now has two; twenty years ago, it had six. Ran around in a bowling center as a child back in the 70's while my parents bowled in league. Good times . . .
@sjfinchum1 The Satellite Lanes WAS on Michigan Ave. near South Gulley Rd. at the Dearborn/Dearborn Heights/Inkster border. The Bowling Alley had over 128 lanes 64 in the east end and 64 in the west end. It had bars, restaurants, mini malls, arcades and a rental banquet halls. It used to be the BIGGEST bowling lanes in the Tri-County area.
@xunclexx it actually had 42 on each side for a total of 84 lanes. The largest was and still is Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park with 94 lanes...which was the site of last years world series of bowling.
I was there on the Friday night and then watched the finals at home-- Roth was cranking that entire tournament-- Reminded me of his glory days [Well not quite but closel]
I had never been to Satellite bowl, was it a split house with 42 lanes on each side? Seems more and more that the larger bowling centers real estate is worth more than the bowling center, I was even recently made an offer for one of my centers to tear it down to build condomiums, I however turned it down as that center is one of my stronger money earners in the fleet....
Satellite Lanes was an 84 lane establishment. There were two sections of 42 lanes each with the pits basically back to back. It was located in Dearborn Heights, Michigan.
Nope 70 lanes and 36 lanes in an backwards L shape so all the machines could be serviced by one service isle. You had to walk tward the pins of lane 70 go through some glass doors and then you would be out by the approaches to lane 71. I don't know if you can picture what I mean by they were in a bacwards L shape and place the machines on the shape and that is how the long gone showboat was laid out. The casino was just steps behind the bowling center.
Yeah, I can envision that. Bowlero in Wauwatosa, WI was something like a checkmark layout, with, if my old memory serves me right, 32 on one side and 24 on the other. Odd layout, but it's a very nice center.
Thanks for getting me straightened out! I had bowled there only once in my life, and was that quite a ways back. :)
the showboat was a hoot. I got to bowl the Junior Team USA qualifier the last year they had it there. The hotel was a dump, but so much history in the house.

@sjfinchum1 Satellite Bowl closed in the early 90s. It was located in Dearborn Heights, Michigan. It is now a Home Depot.

@mrbowling300 I did not really count them (back in 1989), only went by what the attendant said but it was HUGE.

Satellite was a great house overall. Great "action" bowling and classic leagues.

Big money, huh? I love bowling houses named from the dawn of NASA. Satellite, Rocket Bowl, Galaxy Lanes, etc.

I would imagine if there was a bowling alley with at least 100 lanes.
