  • RIP Robert Colesberry

  • The speech doubles as a tribute to Robert Colesbury's career as well as the character he played on "The Wire". The "Mississippi Extradition, The Arson Murders" are a shout out to "Mississippi Burning" on which Colesbury was a Producer, similarly "the triple over at the After Hours on Hudson Street" refers to Scorsese's "After Hours" which Colesbury also produced. "Fayette Street, '93, the drug wars" refers to David Simon and Ed Burns' previous HBO effort "The Corner".

  • @nougatzimmerframe Thanks, good to know. I also didn't know the first 2 times or so I watched this show that the actor actually died. Pretty crazy.

  • Its an irish tradition, make sure the the guys dead before you bury him.

  • I dont understand why the dead body is just lying there!!! what the hellllll is this normal in america

  • @landondonovanify It's an Irish tradition.

  • @landondonovanify Some of Irish heritage will put the body on display and have a drink to not mourn their death, but to celebrate their life.

  • Landsman was a real sack of shit, "but the motherfucker had his moments"

  • "sharing a dark corner of the american experiment".... brilliant! Only David Simon is capable writing like this.

  • I have never seen anything like this ....but Im not Irish ....or Baltimore Police.....is this a BPD tradition.....or fiction......???

  • This show is epic but The Shield is pretty dam close if not as good

  • What is the name of the song they sing

  • @tomperry9 Body of an American by The Pogues

  • @tomperry9 The Pogues - "Body of an american"

  • What a scene!

  • @tracewolf1 Nope

  • Is there anything better then this?

  • Is that a St Brigit's cross next to the corpse? The symbol of the County Louth.

  • Great scene from a great show.

  • this was a great episode really loved when they all sang the irish song . really miss the wire wish they could bring the show back.

  • bunch of wannabe pikey cunts. boooorrring

  • @sh4p3shifter Gtfo you tool.

  • @sh4p3shifter Fuck you up cunthole.

  • the best ever. period

  • First scene I ever saw when i first checked it out before I got the boxsets, Mon the irish!

  • Priceless...Legendary My favourite scene of the 3rd season.

  • He was called. He served. He Is counted. Old King Cole!

  • F**king stairmaster.

  • The most honest and touching eulogy I have ever heard. God I miss this show.

  • What's the name of the song

  • @bassbaine The Pogues - Body Of An American

  • Fair thee well gone away, there's nothing left to say....farewell to New York City, boys, to Boston and P.A........Ah, The Pogues and The Wire. Perfect combination.

  • A wonderful scene. I think this was meant as a tribute to the man who played the character Det. Cole. That man, for those that don't know was Robert F. Colesberry. He was the producer of this this show and several others. He apparently liked to do a little acting; he did 10 episodes. Mr. Colesberry died after heart surgery on 9 Feb. 2004. Thanks for the great show Robert from another Robert. I served just after you 66-68.

  • This is my favorite video to watch on St. Patty's Day!!! What an awesome scene!

  • Great fucking scene ... great fucking song.. Damn I miss the wire!

  • Funny enough Cole was played by Robert Colesberry who had actually died of a heart attack after filming season 2. He was excutive producer of the show and this was a way of the show giving him a wake and that is an actual picture if him.

  • J. Landsman is usually a grotesque figure...doesn't seem to work too much, looks at a lot of porn magazines...however, here and there he gives the deepest and even the most beautiful speeches in the Wire. Just another of those contradictions from this great series

  • what did Landsman put in Cole's jacket at 3:20?

  • So do cops really put the dead body in the bar? And yes, the wire is the best and realist tv drama ever. too bad it only lasted 5 seasons.

  • @errbarkkill sadly no (I don't think)... David Simon said in a commentary that putting the dead body on a pool table was just his idea. Maybe they do it now, after seeing the Wire lol who knows.

  • @drktigger Cool, thanks.

  • So they just put his carcass on the pool table? Somewhat unhygienic.

  • the best show ever.respect from germany.

  • "sharing a dark corner of the American experiment..." fuckin love that line. Pure David Simon

  • Greatest monologue in the history of television. P&S.

  • "He was called. He served. He is counted". Give em the chills.

  • man you don't get much better than The Wire, best show ever

  • They sing it wrong

"by 5 o'clock in the evening everybody there was pissed!"

they change it to something involving whiskey...

  • @Eradicus The line is "everybody there was pisskey."

  • Comment removed

  • @Eradicus The line from the original song is, "....every bastard there was pisskey." ...and I think that's what they sing.

This show is just perfect, the best TV I have ever seen and by a country mile the best.

  • We...are POWLEECE

  • One of the most moving scenes I've ever come across. For all his ball breaking and bluster, Landsman's love for his troops truly shines here. That's a proper send out.

  • I didn't really like Jay Landsman that much at first, but after this... shit how can you NOT like the guy?

  • Super Scene

  • pogues and the wire = the best.

  • I've been a huge fan of the Pogues for longer than I care to remember. But I have to admit for years I misunerstood this song, thinking it was the more usual Irish emigration to " Ameirkay ". It's actually about a guy from the States deciding to to Ireland, " to the shores where his fathers lay ". Or is it the dead man, Big Jim Dwyer in his coffin who is going to Ireland to rest ?

  • Rest in Peace Robert Colsberry

    Here's to the original thinkers

  • This is an astonishingly good show and an astonishingly good song.

  • a dark corner of the American experiment. Tru dat. Mos def.

  • Did Mos Def make a comment about the irish in America.

  • Yep sorry ignore that

  • The best song to play at a funeral in my opinion

  • SEVEN MILLION BARRELS OF PORRRRRTER

  • it's an amazing song

  • The song is "Body of an American" by The Pogues.

  • all the swearing makes it a bit of a joke.

  • what song is this?

  • "Body of an American" by The Pogues.

  • The very moment I saw this scene I decided that my wake would be in the same way.

  • Allright, that´s a sentence from "the Wire" itself. But written with an "m" in the middle.

  • does anyone no the name of the song?

  • body of an american

  • The Best POOlice show on TV

  • Bushills is Protestant Whisky!!

  • and in ireland we have learned something about christianitys splits. we love protestants and catholics. equally. guinness is a protestant drink dont ya know 05

  • true that

  • Bunk's singing face cracks me up every time. the pure intensity

  • ....

but Ray Cole is still with us

    all of us

    in Baltimore

    working

sharing the dark corner of the american Experiment

    he was called

    he served

    on King Cole !!

  • Same here in India. The Sopranos are big here but the Wire's finding a loyal following.

  • its so sad that this show has never gotten the respect that it deserves, we can only hope that time takes care of that. its been said but its real easy:

    best. show. ever

  • It's starting to catch on. I was the only person I knew of in the entire country (Australia) that had heard of this show when I bought the first series DVD. Now people are hearing of it, and watching it, and loving it.

  • Shows you how good this show is that a minor character eulogizing an even more minor character is probably one of the best scenes you'll ever see on television.

  • the wire dont leave anyone behind

  • Just saw this the other night too, utterly mesmerising, as good a use of music as I've ever seen on film or TV. So big Jim Dwyer made his last trip to the shores where his fathers' lay...

  • amazing stuff: saw the episode for the first time last night. awesome!

  • The show is Shakesphere.

  • The Wire is the BEST show ever...period

  • Often when I see someone say this I feel slightly annoyed by their exaggerating, but in this very particular case, I've gotta say fuck yeah!, the wire is the best show I've ever seen.

  • @paisfresh2def Fuck the Bible. The Wire is the greatest story ever told.

  • @paisfresh2def

    good show.

but the sopranos is the best ever.

  • @BenAbu111 The WIre is a lot better than Sopranos imo.

  • @Murreh Come on now, coming from a HUGE fan of The Wire, The Sopranos is the greatest series in TV history by a million miles. The writing was insanly good, how they managed to make such a violent series with a ton of murder and violence as hilarious as they did is an accomplishment in and of itself, thats what makes it stand apart, it entertains you with drama and comedy, it was just such a unique show.

  • @manuteboler Yeah you're a cunt.

  • This is exactly how i want my wake to be like...booze, music, my friends talking true shit about me, no black suits, and no tears...

  • probably the most honest episodic in the history of fucking television... this song, this speech, the looks, the reactions... amazing!!

  • Just read that the character Ray Cole was played by the The Wire executive producer Robert F. Colesberry, who actually died of cardiac complications at the end of season 2.

Makes the scene even more poignant and a fitting tribute

  • man wire the best realistic show that actually made sence in a long time, i wish it never ended :( after watching last episode it felt like something was missing when i had no more wire to watch :(

  • ...man, heard that... best show ever - hands down!! Love this scene...and about a brazillion others from that fine body of work!! here-here.

  • Wow.... just wow!!! Greatest show ever made.... so true to form of Bal-mer.

  • I'd normally agree with you, dropkick, but Landsman is based on a real sargeant David Simon shadowed back in his days writing for the Baltimore Sun. Read his first book, Homicide, and see if you don't change your mind about eloquent cops.

  • @jmucbear You know, come to think of it the real guy was actually named Jay Landsman too. He actually has a small role in season 3 and maybe a few scenes in season 4. I think he plays the lieutenant (correct rank?) under Colvin.

  • @drktigger That's right. The real Jay Landsman played Lt. Dennis Mello. He had a scene in season 5 too at a bar with Gus Haynes.

  • @Shack83 Oh yeah, that's right.

I've read a little bit of the book 'Homicide' by David Simon and it has Jay Landsman in it. There's part where he drives by a trans gender prostitute and says "look at this pretty mother fucker." Lol

  • This show gives you back your belief in television! Thx Wire Team!

  • great scene, fucking god sent show.

  • "He was called. He served. He is counted." Gave me goosebumps.

  • amazing!

  • LOL, the Sgt. is funny as hell

  • The name Baltimore actually comes from Irish words- Baile Ti Mhor- which means "town of the big house"

  • Bunk's facial expressions are great in this episode

  • This is brilliant, I love this.

  • Mad thing is, I live in Ireland and I was at a wake just like this a few weeks ago.

Only the music was live and the corpse was dead.

  • I just love this show and the pogues music fit's the bill perfectly for the wake scenes.

  • I'm not too superstitious, so I'll go ahead and say it, I'd be willing to die if I knew I'd have a wake like this.

  • Where you from ??? Because that some statement!! Ireland sold out ??? What are you on about ??

  • Is not extremely common to drink around a body in Ireland . Ireland has sold out . Or has it?

  • This show makes me proud to be Irish. Best ever!

  • In Ireland it is extremely common to drink around the body of the deceased in their home and to stay up all night getting pissed and telling stories celebrating their life. It can be very cathartic.

  • I really like that...nobody loves the Irish more than us Americans....

  • You're absolutely right. I'm Irish and I've seen many wakes, but the really religious people frown upon the drinking. I think it helps the mood though, in moderation

  • really religious people frown upon everything. ive been at wakes where the corpse has been danced around the garden! drink had been consumed of course...

  • I live just outside Dublin and I've never drank around a body.

  • by the sounds of you you've never drank around anything

  • No, I've just never drank around a body. We don't have such culchie traditions. We get smashed after the body is interred.

  • i live in philly and i went to balitmore last summer because i loved this show so much. baltimore has good food

  • great scene.

  • this is one of the most powerful scenes in the history of the show. it gives me chills.

  • Jay really makes every scene he's in. He is the funniest mother fucker on the show. I love the fat man.

  • The guy who played Colonel Forrester died too as well.

  • Cole had one of my favorite moments on the wire when he was talking to Bunk in season 1 and it went like:

    "Morning Bunk"

    "How you doin ray"

"Great, I got laid last night" -greasy smile-

"Oh yeah? does your asshole still hurt?"

    I fucking love this show

  • The Wire is the best show on TV, period!

  • 2 wakes

  • hey, can someone tell me how many of these wakes at the pub took place throughout the wire. can't remember or find that anywhere. thanks

  • 3 of them total. this one was in season 3, then they had a short clip of mcnulty and bunk at Colonel Forrester's wake in season 4, and then finally Mcnulty's wake in season 5

  • Does anyone know if this is a real Balmer police tradition? Or based on one?

  • the song is the pogues, body of an american

  • Is it true that the director of the Wire Robert Colesberry played Ray Cole and actually died after season 2

  • Yes

  • this scene was made in honor for the director, as well as in honor for all Baltimore City Police

  • sharing a dark corner of the American experiment

  • the bar that this scene was filmed in is actually the best underground punk rock/hardcore venue in baltimore. great scene! i was actually lucky enough to snag that photo of ray cole...sorry, i have to brag about that one haha

  • do they really do this in baltimore? i mean do cops actually drink around the dead body in a bar during the wake?

  • its an Irish custom thats done on the sly. I have been to one and the body was in the pub but in a box not on the pool table, lol. Its so his best mates can send him off. Everyone gets pissed and sings and tells tales about the deceased, its actually very moving.

  • that's awesome! haha, i just didn't know police in baltimore actually do this irish custom

  • Are you Irish-American?

  • nope. i'm actually of scottish decent. my granddad was scottish but he grew up in an Irish neighborhood in Boston, and he moved down to Baltimore with his family in the 1950s.

  • Would they do this for cops that got killed on duty? Like by gunshot wound or something?

  • i have absolutely no idea. lol. i'm guessing if it was by gunshot wound they would still have a wake but without the body in the room like this.

  • I'm a free born man of the USA!

  • God Bless Baltimore City Police!

  • My favorite show, my favorite band....dont get no better

  • this show is the best show in TV history

  • this might the best cop show on tv other than barney miller. I think i might have been a couple of these wakes

  • that background song by the pogues is on of the best song i have ever heard. the pogues are mint n this is a great show even though i dont think it is shown in england

  • i absoltely agree with u that the pogues song is the best ever. i grew up and still live in baltimore and would like to say how much i appreciate the fact that u like the wire. its a great feeling knowing someone from a far distant country such as urself is interested in a tv show about my city. god bless!!!

  • Are you connected with the emerald isle?God bless you if you are!

  • another fine example of why this is the most realistic Police drama ever on TV. Just a great scene.

  • "HE WAS CALLED. HE SERVED. HE IS COUNTED."

background music provided by the pogues, "the body of an american."
