Joe Strummer, based on all the videos I've seen, books I've read..seems like one of the smartest human beings there has been. Very sad he isn't around to offer more insight or maybe to go around with The Clash again
Watching this just makes me realise how much the world needs more people like this around apart from maybe topper looking like he can't speak lol but seriously legends everyone of them!
Jello Biafra Stuck to what he preached because that's all he knew. He became self-absorbed and put blinders on so that he couldn't see past his own bullshit. We all can be full of shit from time to time, you, ME, everyone because we're only human. My point is money doesn't & didn't destroy punk as much as egocentism has.
@tumonni1040 i dont think thats all true. Jello had to put up with a lota shit from DK but I dnt think he's self absorbed. He was just being Jello listen to his spoken words theres brilliant! I dnt think he got over taken by his ego. I went to see him a month ago + you didn get the feelin from him being controlled by his ego. if you could have seen the surprise in eyes when he was singing into the mike of some1 who new his other songs apart from Dk youd understnd
I love the clash but to say they never went astray is bull. They were on MTV, Rock the Casbah was pushed comercially, Mick went on to form Big Audio Dynamite, which was played in dance clubs all over. They are still my favorite band since I was 13 but they evolved over the years as many did and it wasn't always for the better. Punk died when it became self-absorbed & selfserving, which is still happening today, I'm sad to say.
Yea, Tom was good at bringing up new groups during the punk explosion, He had paul weller and joan jett together with concert promoters talking pros and cons about the new music, and again showed respect. Weller was funny, chain smoking through the segment. Joan looked like she was 15. He interviewed the sex pistols, iggy pop, the jam, and many more. Kudos Tom Snyder, you were ahead of your time. Did you have a son named Carson Daily?
The Clash are the band that made me realize that i was born to be a musician, the band that made me realize that rock music is my kind of music (especially punk) and blah blah blah I dont know what the fuck i'm talking about coz i'm drunk. anyway Yeah! The Clash are the best or were the best no fuck you they are the best :)
I had not seen this interview in a long time! Still great and still funny to watch and really The Clash in my mind are the only "punk" band that stuck to what they preached
@Laidleypunk12 Anti Flag don't really know enough about them to be honest. Dead Kennedy's Jello Biafra stuck to what he preached but the rest of them just went after money. And Minor Threat yeah I agree they definitely practiced what they preached. I guess I was more criticizing bands like the Sex Pistols that some think are the icons of punk but yet Johnny Rotten makes butter commercials.
@rutaloot yeah, a lot of the time I don't consider sex pistols punk rock. The music sounds like it, but they yeah ... not to mention the fact they aren't really anarchists, they're nihilists (well, they were). But at the same time a lot of punk bands (like GBH) were politically apathetic, so in some sense they practiced what they preached, because generally, their songs were based on past experiences (like big women, the lead singer of GBH had a fetish for fat chicks)
@emmers57 though I feel I should add that he's not only delicious in that fysical sense but also in the fact that he's just clever as fuck and a really reflective individual. and it probably didn't hurt having joe strummer around.
@emmers57 Which is funny because if you read about how they first got together, Mick Jones thought Paul's looks were WHY he should be in the band. Mick once even said about Paul, "He was just *there*, looking fantastic... the bastard" (haha). I guess everyone is in love with Paul.
Joe Strummers one of the greatest guys ever. He cracks me up in the interveiw when he combs his hair and grabs the bear. Paul: Bang! Bang! Ha! There won't be any more bands like the Clash for our generation sadly Oi! but mabye there will you never know do you.
@WorlddestroyGuy Yeah & the funniest thing about Snyder is his ridiculous post-apocalyptic Beatle haircut or more like the wig on his head. Strummer was a well-off diplomat's son by the way, not from the working class at all like the other members of the band. You would never know if from hearing him speak though. He went & lived with those guys & became the personification of their ethos. Sort of like Che Guevara doing his commie bit in Cuba with that planned controlled opposition charade.
that's the first full clash interview i've seen. i've seen strummer and mick jones in interbiews but not the whole band. that was cool what joe said about greedy landlords too.
must take a decent interviewer to make an interview with the clash honest, funny and relaxed. this fella seems markedly better than most of those shite american chat hosts
Tom Snyder was a fantastic interviewer. I remember watching Mr. Snyder at age 13 because he always got the best interviews out of the coolest people. When Mr. Snyder found out that he was terminally ill the first thing that he did was start to make arrangements to bring back his top 10 favorite interviewees to have another chat before he died. Sadly, it took so long to iron out the odds and ends with a TV Station that it never came to fruition.
@lesterclaypool1 I caught the last two or so years from Snyders show at CBS. Didnt particularly like him, but he was a reporter and interviewer brought the old school way and was not affraid to ask some uncomfortable questions and came across as kinda of a douche. When i heard he died, i dont know why i felt sad. Kinda of like losing that uncle who you hated when you were young, cause he told like it is.
A good example of the point that you make are the two Jon Lydon interviews: The angry young man at 21 had no use for Mr, Snyder but the slightly mellowed 40 year old was able to see his point, even if he didn't agree, and have a decent conversation.
I remember feeling put out when he died, too. Maybe it was because I learned so much about the people that I liked because of his straight forward interview style?
@lesterclaypool1 absolutely, when youre a young punk youa hate old guys like him, cause he sees the whole punk thing for the silly thing it is. And a young punk is driven by feeling and angst rather than rationale. Its like when you get to speak to a teacher, and youre so angry and non conformist, but he just smiles. And you get so frustated cause he doesnt get your point. He just doesnt understand. But as you get older you become that teacher. Plus, he wasnt affraid to interview anyone, i think
@LxPxRxPunk You will never find a bigger collective of sad and unstable people than elementary and secondary educators. There are exceptions, my brother in law is certainly one, but anyone who takes a job where the objective is to ensure that those in their power conform is obviously suffering some major issues. That being said, there are valuable lessons to be taken from being able to assimilate in a social situation at least to the point that you are able to be understood, and perhaps teach.
@lesterclaypool1 on teacher's defense, one of the objectives of education is giving kids the tools to adapt according to society's needs, or else we wouldnt be communicating through the language taught to us. And you must become jaded when faced agains hundreds of spoiled brats. But surely, Ive met some fuked up people at those level of education, with some really fuked up priorities as well. But who's well adjusted and stable: police officers? politicians?
I've never thought the problem the teachers rather the education sysrem. For example: We've known for decades, through scientific testing, that the teen age brain is more receptive in the afternoon and early evening but instead of taking this into consideration ensuring that these kids get the most from their education we force them to classes at 8 am so that the educators can be home by four.
The system, itself, attracts people that just aren't teachers, and the students suffer.
@lesterclaypool1 again, is not all the educators fault. Those studying hours are choosen taking in consideration the parents working hours too. Most parents work within 8 and 4, maybe 6 pm. Or have someone available by the time kids get off from school. Or the housewife has finished all her work. Many parents see schools as child-care centers and not learning facilities. Remember a system (any kind) is only what society makes it to be. It is only a reflection of society. Better work hours?
Short term answer seems to be homeschooling. Ironically, a lot of public educators that I know turned to home schooling for their own.
My brother in law teaches a co-ed program and runs his classroom and office hours from 12-7 to better facilitate the needs of his students but that only reflects the leeway given by a specialized program.
Considering we were projected to be working 12 hr weeks and flying in bubble cars by now any change will be a long time coming, my friend.
@lesterclaypool1 the more I think about it, them more Im conviced that school is not at all a necessary experiencie. Does a kid really have to experience beatings, rejection and just plain cruelty from the moment he goes into kindergarden? Dont think so. At the same time, you and I grew up in that environment (i think), and we learne, ultimately, to survive. Isnt survival a necessary skill? Again, Im not defending teachers and schools, Im just saying its not that bad of a concept.
@LxPxRxPunk I think that group institutionalized experiences like public school are imperative to proper development, you can't go along if you haven't learned to get along, my problem is letting those with not much more maturity than the students run the asylum.
When you have unionized workers with a basic education being the only criteria to fill the job you're bound to attract a lot of bad eggs.
@lesterclaypool1 agree with you on that one, as mentioned, Ive met some really fuked up educators (males and females) whose objective and love is not teaching and nurturing creativity on a child. AT ALL. Mostly, they let their personal agenda get on the way. But thats what punk (and hippie culture to some extent) contributed: a critical view of the establishment, the status quo. Many believe that is just rock n roll, but it definitely can change mindset of young people.
You may find educator John Taylor Gatto (a former teacher of year in NYC public school system) of interest as well as Sir Ken Robinson talking about education on the TEDx talk series pertinent to your education discussion.
Thanks for the tips. I've seen Mr. Gatto's name in the press and picked up on it because my mother in law taught with a John Gatto, though not the same one as it turns out, but I can't say that I've ever fully investigated what his position or opinion is. I've seen many interviews with Sir Robonson but I didn't know that there was a formal address by him with no airhead TV presenter cutting in so I'll look forward to watching that. Thanks again.
Stop trolling, if you knew anything about the history of the band members, you'd know they were a lot more than posh white boys sitting around twiddling their thumbs.
For god's sakes, do you think any average petite bourgeoisie could write a tune as lyrically brilliant as Washington Bullets or Straight to Hell?
If you mean by the way they dressed and presented themselves, then yes, they posed a lot, especially for the cameras and what not. That's pretty much what Punk always was about, making a scene, a fuss, in an eye catching way.
But their music man, their music wasn't fake, and that's what counts. Always sincere, always from the heart.
this is very cool, he seems like one of those old, very serious news reporters but he treated the Clash very well and definately showed them respect while they were their, good job Tom Snyder
There's a wonderful interview on here that Mr. Snyder did with Alice Cooper during Alice's booze relapse of the early 80's. The tone of the interview is so interesting because you have Cooper looking half dead and Tom asking the questions that no one else may get to ask because he sensed that the man was dying.
The death of Tom Snyder effected me more than I thought it would. I just knew that quality interviews like this would be hard to come by after his passing.
Yeah hes alright in this interveiw but in the Public Image Limited hes a jerk. He asks Johnny what they are. He doesn't even know hes interveiwing a band! Johnny gets mad and says who could have at least did your research on us. Five minutes is all it would take. Then the bands mad the whole time Toms a smart ass and its terrible. You don't have to like the guys but your not gonna gets jokes and laughs if the guys know you probably had to interveiw without choice.
Yes. Tom Snyder was one of the best, if not the best ever, at being an interviewer / host. He had a great sense of humor and was exceptional at giving guests respect and time to reflect their views without putting words in their mouths or taking an angle and working it for conflict. If only there was more class in todays media perhaps people would be more understanding of differences but then again that does not fit the media's goal of selling via controversy.
@Kevoooooooooooooooo Tom was a true professional. He had "controversial" guests like the Plasmatics and he treated all of them with respect and just had nice conversations with them.
except it was impossible for even Tom to have a nice conversation with Johnny Rotten when he was on the show with PIL. You should check out his 1981 interview with Bill Murray, funny stuff.
Everybody says that this is a bad interview because he didn't get a lot out of them, but I think this is a top Clash interview precisely for that reason. The entire interview they were more interested in amusing themselves than anything and that in itself says a lot about the Clash
What's with the musicians not being able to touch the bear? Why is the bear there?
If you look at the classic Snyder interview with KISS, Ace Frehley is playing with the bear and putting the arm pieces from his costume on him. Off camera you clearly hear someone say "Sit, put down the bear"! Now Joe can't sit with the bear...
@196177 The Pistols were more about fashion. They couldn't even craft a meaningful punk song. The Clash were ten times more meaningful to punk and pop culture. After all the are "The only band that matters".
I love the Clash, but they're acting like idiots here. When you actually have a message, articulate it on your albums, and then can't explain it when you're given a soapbox to articulate your world view and philosophy, you come across as a bunch of working-class dipshits. Where's the fucking integrity here? It's irritating to watch some of the most interesting songwriters of this generation act like teenagers.
@bigasshardon maybe that's why they expressed their opinions with music and lyrics and maybe this would be quite a boring interview if they were talking idiotic serious..?
@bigasshardon I agree this interview was a letdown. They obviously should have had much to say but didn't. I could see how people might not take them serious after this. Regardless, they are in my top 5 favorite bands of all time.
I saw the Clash in New Zealand in the early 80s and it remains the best live performance I have ever been to. Joe Strummers rapport with the audience was amazing.
This is where the Clash realy piss me off. They have this spotlight on them and instead of using it in a positive way to show what their about, that they really have something to say in their songs they piss away the opportunity
Man the Clash were just raw, honest, and real. They knew what they were doing

@LxPxRxPunk I think that group institutionalized experiences like public school are imperative to proper development, you can't go along if you haven't learned to get along, my problem is letting those with not much more maturity than the students run the asylum.
When you have unionized workers with a basic education being the only criteria to fill the job you're bound to attract a lot of bad eggs.
lesterclaypool1 9 months ago
@lesterclaypool1 agree with you on that one, as mentioned, Ive met some really fuked up educators (males and females) whose objective and love is not teaching and nurturing creativity on a child. AT ALL. Mostly, they let their personal agenda get on the way. But thats what punk (and hippie culture to some extent) contributed: a critical view of the establishment, the status quo. Many believe that is just rock n roll, but it definitely can change mindset of young people.

@lesterclaypool1
You may find educator John Taylor Gatto (a former teacher of year in NYC public school system) of interest as well as Sir Ken Robinson talking about education on the TEDx talk series pertinent to your education discussion.
majik2hanz 8 months ago
@majik2hanz

The Clash always were a fake bunch of pretentious middle class twats pretending to be street kids.
digivate 1 year ago
@digivate
Stop trolling, if you knew anything about the history of the band members, you'd know they were a lot more than posh white boys sitting around twiddling their thumbs.
For god's sakes, do you think any average petite bourgeoisie could write a tune as lyrically brilliant as Washington Bullets or Straight to Hell?
degree7 1 year ago 2
@degree7 No trolling. Just a strongly held opinion. I could never take the Clash seriously. They were transparent posers and fakers.
digivate 11 months ago
@digivate
How were they fake? They lived how they preached.
degree7 11 months ago
@digivate Actually, Joe was the only one in the middle class, lower middle class. The rest of the group grew up dirt poor

@digivate theres no such thing as middle class when your born and raised in brixton.

@joshuk666 Brixton actually used to be a very affluent middle class area.

If you mean by the way they dressed and presented themselves, then yes, they posed a lot, especially for the cameras and what not. That's pretty much what Punk always was about, making a scene, a fuss, in an eye catching way.
But their music man, their music wasn't fake, and that's what counts. Always sincere, always from the heart.
degree7 11 months ago
@digivate well, that's ur opinion. but why are you on ;here? Joe Strummers lyrics are what i live by everyday. You are honestly hurting me.
Evan42881 11 months ago
@digivate They were all actually dirt poor and all had sad lives. Joe's brother died when he was 16 and he had to identify the body.

this is very cool, he seems like one of those old, very serious news reporters but he treated the Clash very well and definately showed them respect while they were their, good job Tom Snyder
Kevoooooooooooooooo 1 year ago 45
@Kevoooooooooooooooo
I just knew that quality interviews like this would be hard to come by after his passing.
lesterclaypool1 1 year ago
Yeah hes alright in this interveiw but in the Public Image Limited hes a jerk. He asks Johnny what they are. He doesn't even know hes interveiwing a band! Johnny gets mad and says who could have at least did your research on us. Five minutes is all it would take. Then the bands mad the whole time Toms a smart ass and its terrible. You don't have to like the guys but your not gonna gets jokes and laughs if the guys know you probably had to interveiw without choice.
oiclash 10 months ago
@Kevoooooooooooooooo
Yes. Tom Snyder was one of the best, if not the best ever, at being an interviewer / host. He had a great sense of humor and was exceptional at giving guests respect and time to reflect their views without putting words in their mouths or taking an angle and working it for conflict. If only there was more class in todays media perhaps people would be more understanding of differences but then again that does not fit the media's goal of selling via controversy.
majik2hanz 8 months ago
@Kevoooooooooooooooo Tom was a true professional. He had "controversial" guests like the Plasmatics and he treated all of them with respect and just had nice conversations with them.
mhz23 7 months ago
@mhz23
except it was impossible for even Tom to have a nice conversation with Johnny Rotten when he was on the show with PIL.

Poor bear.

Funny how in England you couldn't like The Pistols and The Clash..Whats that about? I was floored by both bands..
196177 1 year ago
@196177 The Pistols were more about fashion. They couldn't even craft a meaningful punk song. The Clash were ten times more meaningful to punk and pop culture. After all the are "The only band that matters".

met them yesterday they are very nice and talkative i met mick and paul
pinkmeola 1 year ago
I love the Clash, but they're acting like idiots here. When you actually have a message, articulate it on your albums, and then can't explain it when you're given a soapbox to articulate your world view and philosophy, you come across as a bunch of working-class dipshits. Where's the fucking integrity here? It's irritating to watch some of the most interesting songwriters of this generation act like teenagers.
bigasshardon 1 year ago 2
@bigasshardon maybe that's why they expressed their opinions with music and lyrics and maybe this would be quite a boring interview if they were talking idiotic serious..?
stumblestfu 1 year ago
@bigasshardon I agree this interview was a letdown. They obviously should have had much to say but didn't. I could see how people might not take them serious after this. Regardless, they are in my top 5 favorite bands of all time.

Gah, they are so cheerful - and the live canned laughter is surreal. Rockin Clash!
Tom almost connects around 4:50. They're still buffing the show, though, Courageable buggers v. the sticky wicket ending on "the funny farm".
Dig the "squatter" exchange approx 6:56 to 7:15. Those guys will not be gentrified, and I for one find it admirable.
