  • i want th fuel tank white for the last space shuttle mission. why is it orange?

  • @penfat1 Only STS-1 and STS-2 had white external tanks. Later on they realized that it's cheaper to leave the white paint away.

  • It looked funny with the first two space shuttl launches with the external tank all white, as well as the SRB's, I'm glad they decided to keep the External Fuel Tank dark brown or almost orange now because I've gotten used to the current color of the External Tank. Sure is a shame that come 2010, the Space Shuttle program will be phased out, wonder what will become of the three shuttles NASA is using? maybe donate them to a museum?

  • why is it brown/orange now? is it to save paint like i've read somewhere else?? thanks!

  • Not really to save paint..but weight..all that paint really adds up! The color now is the natural color of the foam insulation on the tank.

As far as retirement plans, I expect them to be put on display at Kennedy, Johnson, and Marshall space flight centers just as the remaining Saturn 5's were..but not sure about that.

  • @AcrossTheRiverStix the orange is the color of the foam they cover the tank with, the white was just paint which they stopped using to save 2-300kg of take off weight

  • better treated then the Russian shuttles I'm sure ;), one got damaged an broken after no one wanted to move it when it was sitting outside, another got damaged when it was left in a hanger that was in bad shape, and the last one was sent off to germany where they could actually take care of it in a museum

  • @Kjr0se 1 shuttle is going to the smithsonian guys, the other 2 are supposedly on sale at $28ish million US each for any museum or the like to buy. So i have read online at least, apparently main engines and other random oddities of the program are available too

  • Watching these never gets old. It's funny watching these early launches with the white E.T..
