Carl Lewis and Mike Powell

I was a Carl Lewis fan and still am of all his achievements but to see Mike Powell in that much pain really broke my heart, I hate to see anybody in pain and their dream destroyed such as Powells. Remember Derek Redmond in 92 in Barcelona.

Carl was 36 years old and he had fouled twice - and he still beat everyone else. Nine gold medals in four Olympics. Enough said. He beat all of the young studs and shut everyone up, again.

So, Carl Lewis held the world record in the 100 and 4x100, he still holds the indoor LJ world record. He won a total of 9 Olympic gold medals, and another 8 World Championships gold medals. He probably had the longest career span of any track athlete in the last century. And he was probably one of the best technically gifted athletes of all time.

The winning jump was controversial to say the least. The TV director never showed the close-up to the mark, maybe for a reason he didn't. After all, the competition was held in the U.S. Remember the similar scheme in Rome 1987 by the hosts.
