The young brother I was dating at the time introduced me to Jazz with this song. I was 14 and he was 15. I was awe struck. Needless to say he knew how to get my heart and my attention. 13 years later we got married. I thank him continually for opening my heart and mind to this music and he could not have chosen a better intro. That was in 1958
@schimmelpenninq You, person, are a complete idiot. You must have no clue the importance of this groove and what Vernel Fournier did for the drumming world. The genius is in the simplicity and creativity....then again, I wouldn't expect you to understand that. Moron.
'A Man of No Words" Saw Ahmad in the early 60's in Detroit. He walked on stage, never looking at the audience, sat down played for over 2 hrs, got up and walked off the stage without saying one word. No one complained. What wonderful music.
I wish someone would put together a CD of all the known versions of Poinci for those of us who love every one we've ever heard -- in my case since about 1960! As a Certified Old Fart myself, I marvel at his ever-evolving energy, subtlety, and phrasing. It's like he's carrying every note and chord he's ever played doing this song and each time it comes out new. How absolutely fabulous. Cheers my old ass up!
I first heard this was1960 when my dad brought home the Ahmad at the Pershing LP. The Pershing Hotel was about a 4 minute walk from where we lived in Chicago. I wondered how the drummer was getting such a "ringing" sound out of his Hi-Hat cymbals because he certainly had to be using both hands to play the grooves I heard on the drums. Dad said NO-he is playing the drums with ONE HAND-riding on the cymbal with the other. It was years before I belived anyone could groove like that with one hand..
@Cessali I was very impressed watching your grandfather and the apparent ease with which he played with Ahmad Jamal and Israel Crosby. Much respect to him!

Talk about a natural high...I absolutely love the way he and the group approach this song--from the 50s through today. Thanks for posting this!

Kenny Washington is a genius of modern jazz drumming and on here is keeping the spirit of Vernel Fournier alive. God bless him for that.
