  • orgasm in my ear.

  • @bdejong7 totally

  • @bdejong7 I So know what u mean

  • So beautiful.

  • Saw them live at a free gig without really knowing them and was blown away :)

  • When did John Lennon decide to become a drummer for the National?

  • @Divinemadness2 When did one 10 piece band become a grenadier on the battlefield?

  • @invisibalkid1 Dunno. But a bagpiper on the battlefield has often been worth an entire regiment, as you know...

  • @Divinemadness2 He woke up from the grave when he heard them and joined them when he realized these guys were the real deal!!! :)

  • Esta rola me destruye. (This song's destroyed me!)

  • @deathgreeb101 lmao, it would actually be funny to see them play together.

Can you imagine Zakk Wylde pounding out "Terrible Love" with the Dessners? I would pay to see that, man.

  • @broboy92 When I think about someone covering Terrible Love I immediately think of Tome Waits actually.

  • @Zane9471 Oh my god, I can't believe I didn't even think of Tom Waits. Jeez. Now THAT is something I would DEFINITELY pay to see. :D

  • Just moved to London. I like pretending this is for me.

  • Stop all you's fightin, I'm gettin ice cream, bitches.

  • This sounds like horrible alternative music from the early 90s.

  • Is it "afraid of the house" or "afraid of the height"? Because the latter makes more sense.

  • what's up with the mumford and sons argument?? they're ok, but c'mon... THIS IS THE NATIONAL(=GODS) lets aruge about how awesome they're instead!!

  • This is one of my favorite songs. Ever.

I've never been to England, I'd like to go some day.

Oh, and I like Mumford and Sons. Listen to 'White Blank Page' - there is nothing insincere about it. It's brilliant.

  • @GenocideOnToast Ew Mumford and Sons? lol Your either a woman or a guy with shitty taste in music.

  • Why has youtube become a platform for spewing out hurtful and hateful comments...all it does is bring more of the same. What difference does it make? The National is awesome! ...if you favor another group that's great too...but they're not as good : )..lol

  • Looking forward to seeing this at Reading Festival. Guaranteed England banter will be involved.

  • I listen to this often, and it really gets me every time. The blend of band and symphonic that The National offer are pleasing to the ear. Thank You to "The National". Well done on all tracks.

  • This is so completely brilliant. Anyone who hasn't seen the national live has missed out on something that's more real and moving than anything I've personally ever done.

  • Jesus Christ is kicking ass on the drums!

  • @killingspeedrun

    Doesn't he always??

  • He soo should have started singing Eleanor Rigby...

  • holy fucking shit i just blew my load on absolutely everything

  • @jmdirty23 sounds awesome yum

  • Beautifully done!

  • this shits all over the mumford and sons cover makes me depressed that people actually think its better, when I hear this song I can visualise myself in london in the rain FUCKIN INSPARATIONAL

  • @crazyfeh12 Mumford & Sons are one of the worst bands in history. Pissweak posh tosspots trying to be working class, lyrically dismal, repetitive farting on about heart and soul because they soooooooooo mean it, man, musically uninspired, and I could happily shove Country Winston's fucking banjo right up Country Winston's arse. Even the very worst of the shitty Britpop bands weren't as crap as Mumford & Bastards.

The National on the other hand are simply fabulous.

  • @HeartfeltDawn im feeling a deep deep hatred fro mumford and sons... and i like it haha

  • @HeartfeltDawn THAT WAS GREAT, TEAR TO MY EYE :,)

  • @HeartfeltDawn I guess you don't know a spectacular band when you see one..... all I can say.

  • @HeartfeltDawn Lyrically dismal?!?!??! know what you are talking about before you open your trap. Mumford is awesome! I bet The National were pleased to hear that Mumford covered their song. I am a fan of The National now because of Mumford. It's ok, some people in the world such as yourself are just jealous of real talent.

  • @ReBeWyMmOt Right, I'm jealous of Cuntford and Twats. So why am I not jealous of The National who I think are a fantastic band? Surely my heart should be raging in jealousy toward any band more successful than myself? I tell you what, let's wait for you to jump a few IQ points and then come back to me with a vaguely intelligent argument. Whilst you're at it, go through the lyrics sheet for the debut album and tot up how many times they fart on about heart and soul.

  • @HeartfeltDawn What's so bad about Mumford and Sons? I mean I'm not crazy about them and The National is clearly better, but I think they're tolerable. I'm legimately curious as to why you think they are awful.

  • @colebluefearn Sure. Musically they're limited and using banjos etc doesn't cover over the lack of anything musically interesting there. Marcus Mumford vocally is hideous, like he's doing some cod-Irish croon. Lyrically his preoccupation with 'heart' and 'soul' smacks of him believing that pissing on about heart and soul constantly gives your music added authenticity. His dreadful rhymes don't help either.

  • The Pitchfork review of the album had it right. As I shall quote: "Late in the album, "Dust Bowl Dance" kicks up some American Gothic ambience with what sounds like the least believable stab at a murder ballad ever set to record. "I'll go out back and I'll get my gun," Mumford sings, like a man who had never handled a firearm in his life. " Totally correct. Hearing a former public schoolboy singing about getting his gun is utterly ridiculous.

  • @HeartfeltDawn I'm sorry and I don't meant to be rude, but you do realise Mumford and Sons' song Dust Bowl Dance is based off of the novel The Grapes of Wrath? It's not an autobiographical song, it is one based in literature — like Sufjan Stevens singing the stories of Carl Sandburg poetry in his album Illinoise. You have every right to not like Mumford and Sons, but please try not to be critical when Marcus Mumford was simply writing a song based out of his love for classic literature.

  • @SidraZimmerman Oh, you aren't rude at all and I know about the apparent link to The Grapes of Wrath. What I'm critical about is the limited frame of reference. If I started singing about living in a black ghetto based on a book, I'd sound totally ridiculous as my frame of reference would be so small. Same with you as a US female if you started singing about living in a working class estate here in Britain.

  • @SidraZimmerman Now in Sufjan's case he brings Sandberg into the song as imagery. Bob Dylan did this countless times in his songs, Desolation Row being an obvious example. There's a difference between using something as imagery and what Mumford does by placing himself in a Grapes of Wrath scenario. It's as daft as me writing a song putting me in Compton hanging about with gangs when I have absolutely zilch experience or frame of reference of that situation beyond what I have read.

  • @HeartfeltDawn Mm, point taken. I suppose Mumford had some identification with the protagonist of Grapes of Wrath, but rather then laying out the identification, he merely recounted the story. Then again, what gives one authority to write about such things? How much knowledge must one have? Authors write novels set in historical times they'll never experience, but they've done the research, and therefore have credibility.

  • @HeartfeltDawn While authors have believability though, I guess you're trying to say Mumford did not succeed in convincing you of himself as the main character. In that case, your opinion is very valid.

  • @SidraZimmerman You've encapsulated it perfectly. Yes, it's that idea of Mumford as the central figure that I found so ridiculous. It's a hard thing to nail down but Johnny Cash sounded utterly believable when he sang of shooting a man in Reno. Marcus Mumford sings about guns and it sounds like absolute pish.

  • To me, Marcus Mumford singing about getting his gun is as preposterous as me, a middle class white geek, singing about living in America and hanging with his gang members. Mumford & Sons strive to be authentic rootsy people without getting close. It's like some Ikea version of folk pop. There, good enough for you?

  • Comment removed

  • @HeartfeltDawn You say Mumford is Lyrically dismal, Cuntford and Twats, really? Come on, you come up with that all by yourself? Maybe you would be a better lyricist than Mumford, HA! Heart and Soul is the key element in all music, it’s the key element in pursuing anything of interest for anyone. People follow their hearts and protect their souls. Your going off on how many times M&S fart on about heart and soul, your freaking user name is HartfeltDawn, you’re a hypocrite!

  • @ReBeWyMmOt Alright, I'll reply individually to all of your comments. Unlike M&S, I know my lyrics are toss, hence me not putting them out them. Heart and soul is indeed key and yes, 'heartfelt' is in my username. My point is that M&S use the words 'heart' and 'soul' quite repetitively in their lyrics. Indeed, from my quick glance at the lyrics, I reckon at least seven of the songs on Sigh No More feature the word 'heart'.

  • @ReBeWyMmOt That's what I mean about repetitively going on about heart and soul. Eventually it renders it meaningless through repetition. As for my username... do I use that repetitively in my words to you through choice? Now you mention the National using soul in one song. I challenge you to look at the lyrics to the High Violet album and see if they use the word 'soul' or 'heart' in as many songs as M&S do on Sigh No More.

  • @HeartfeltDawn You contradict everything you posted regarding this argument, I can’t wait to see what clever response you have for me. M&S have captured their fans because their fans can relate to their music, you’re out of control with your hate. Do you believe for one second that The National does not fart on about heart and soul? True fan you are, or your just deaf.

  • @ReBeWyMmOt Are you a psychiatrist? To be able to deduce that I am 'out of control' with my hate based on a few Youtube posts is a real gift. You're wasted posting about M&S and Rancid, my friend. You should be out there treating people, roaming the world like a post-20th century Jesus, healing the sick, soothing the pain of the ill, and diagnosing those who dislike modern day wanky folkpop. In the meantime, feel free to explain quite how I contradict myself.

  • @ReBeWyMmOt As for heart and soul, simply look at the lyric sheet for Sign No More and see how many times the words 'heart' and 'soul' are mentioned. A desperate grab for emotional depth and authenticity, repeating the same shit over and over again. They did at least start as they meant to go on, Awake My Soul being one of the first songs the band wrote...

  • @HeartfeltDawn You make no sense! You’re a rambler. I enjoy arguments with valid points that make sense from people who are knowledgeable about what they are arguing about. Read my last post again, it explains how you contradict yourself. You say “A desperate grab for emotional depth and authenticity, repeating the same shit over and over again.” All I have to say is listen to the song Afraid of Everyone by your beloved National, this time you look up the lyrics! Soul, Soul, Soul, Soul…

  • @ReBeWyMmOt Now, my little Cuntford and Twats ditty... yes, it's childish. I'll refrain from using it again. I'll simply say that M&S are a deeply boring mainstream folk pop band with tiresome lyrics and a singer who has this really odd croon. In these facile times, it's somehow inevitable that they'll be hailed as deep inventive thoughtful poets. I'll remain happy to dismiss them as the soudtrack to Gap stores everywhere.

  • In my opinion Matt's voice carries the emotion of their songs just as well as the instruments. To say that there isn't any emotion in his voice seems ludicrous. However, this is a quite underwhelming performance by him, a bit of why he's so fantastic starts to come out around 5:25, but I just don't think he was drunk/excited enough at this point! Also, are all the crowd sitting down? If they are then I don't think they're really entering into the spirit of things.

  • @BadlyMauledBoy they're standing

  • orgasm

  • I think, as other people have said, he needs to have more emotion in his voice. I think this is a beautiful song, and they are brilliant songwriters, he just needs to show his feelings a bit more. That's why I think that Mumford & Sons cover is probably better.

  • @alwaysandeverful if you don't think he has emotion in his voice...check out their "afraid of everyone" performance on letterman.

  • @nickfromCO Yeah, that is a good performance. Maybe it's just this one, I do like they're recorded stuff...

  • Gives me hope for the future of music =D

  • brilliant song

  • ariakewaveband chill out ay..I feel lots from this song. Relax. Noones questioning anything. Its a brilliant song..

  • Solid music!! Boring as shit vocals but a good sound. I listen to this album more than I probably should considering the lack of release in the singing and who is he to call anyone a loser

  • @Pacmanjmr I think the vocals work well with the music. Brings more emotion out in the music. It makes a good contrast to such beautiful music.

  • I listen to this formulaic crap to go to sleep sometimes and even then I get bored, nah the music's pretty solid but the vocals are pretty dull and who's he to call anyone a loser!

  • the energy build up is so amazing in this video, the control this band has to hold back and let the build up happen insanely slow is remarkable. and it pays off.. daammnn

  • I am a very big fan of The National. I think the instrumentals are amazing. Unrivaled; but I feel that he has so much more behind his voice that he isn't letting out, which to me detracts from the overall performance.

  • me encanta muchisimo!!!hasta en Primavera Sound dudes!!!

  • Ringo on the drums there. Nicely done.

  • just lovely....

  • portal 2!

  • They will be in Chicago in two weeks with the Arcade Fire. I can't fucking wait!

  • All of the tracks from "High Violet" knock it out f the park, and I am listening to at least two a day.

  • I bought three albums on the strength of hearing only several songs on youtube, and felt immediately that this band's music would soothe and thrill my soul. It has been doing that for several days and I feel wonderful for having discovered them.

  • England gets the ones you never need...lol

  • Tindersticks

  • this is soooooooo good realy talented band!

  • awesome band. awesome song.

  • One of the best band i've discovered in the last ten years for sure!

  • I didn't know Paul Walker played guitar in the National

  • @OmNomOnSouls Probably because he doesn't.

  • they sound way better live than i thought they would have

  • @slye1991 Their live shows are probably the best part about them as a group. I've seen them twice and they were beyond excellent both times. The energy they put out is absolutely incredible. It doesn't hurt that their music is awesome too. :)

  • The best song from the best album of 2010.

  • Seen them at Crossing Border festival in the Hague, A.W.E.S.O.M.E! And this track rocks! One of my favourite bands!

  • Brillantes.

    Saludos from Spain.

  • Who heard this on Zane last week? Awesome.

  • no words, have no words... don't even know what to do, laugh or cry.... ok, i'll just go out of here..download this from downloadmusic.im

  • I'm a big The National fan, but am I the only one who is willing to admit I can't make out any of the words he's singing in this performance? A lot of mumbling.

  • @Katyjen I couldn't agree more. Maybe I would be able to appreciate this song if I could actually understand the lyrics.

  • @Katyjen second that one. I can't enjoy a song of wich I'm supposed to understand the lyrics of but the mumbling of the singer just makes it incomprehensible..

  • I heard this on Grey's this week during an emotional cliffhanging scene lol and i HAD to find this song! To more of my excitement i found that it was one of my fav bands! THE NATIONAL! Haha gotta love grey's they always have good music :)

  • 2 people watching this are English.

  • @k0ekjebakker hahah, i liek this song, but to tell you the truth i have no idea what the words mean, but it's all reet :)

  • I can't chose my favourite song off the album, its loaded with awesomeness

  • I love how Matt's voice kind of develops a pixie-esque tone when he's singing live.

  • I'm from England, loving my life in the rain, loving this tune -- awesome!

  • lobsterrox12 is right. This should be England's National Anthem.

  • I'm from England. Thank You.

  • @poada2008 By the way, can we have Lennon back please, he seems to be playing your fucking Drums.

  • the national would be a lot better if they weren't so gay for obama

  • this should be England's national anthem :)

  • Trombone sheet music, i want it.

  • @UsagiShika yea, it's about 4 notes, plus an octave change, figure it out, nobody cares that you play trombone

  • Cheers for saving the best song on the album for our little island.

  • Goosebumps.

  • possibly the best song from their entire collection. a very mature sound from an excellent band.

  • hey whats with the octave change?

  • Matt is drinking from a glass cup rather than a water bottle. So fucking classy.

  • Best encore song ever.

  • These guys have amazing senses of humour.

  • track of the year, no question. if you fail to feel anything from hearing this, you are more cold hearted than you should ever allow yourself to be. music still matters and no amount of industry shake up/general ignorance can deflate it as this video clearly demonstrates.

  • @ariakewaveband Or it could be just personal taste and you feel things from other music.

  • @ariakewaveband i thought it was rather empty if you ask me.. hollow and empty. felt nothing. and this is coming from a guy that donated $20 to japan
