Those demonstrators you see here are the drugged-up homeless and punks I used to see when I commuted in and out of Charing Cross station in those years. I don't know why people look upon the 70s as worse than the Thatcher years. From what I see, the civil unrest was far worse during Thatcher's decade in power - Miners strikes, Poll tax riots, Rupert Murdoch & the Wapping dispute, Football & general hooliganism... I think the 80s was a very violent time.
The '70's was used by Tories to bash the Labour party and Trade Unions.... that tactic worked in the 1980's and helped them get elected but by the late '90's and naughties, referring to winters of discontents and the seventies was irrelevant to a lot of voters, who weren't born or couldn't remember it.

These demonstrators are very brave against Policemen but I wonder how brave they would be against armed British troops and light mechanised equipment.
Thatcher had thought about using troops on the mainland but her problem was most of the troops came from the same communities she wanted to control. This has been a problem for the establishment going back 200 years since the 'modern' police "force" service came into being.

It wasn't meant to be exploited by foreigners but rather it was meant for the native poor. If it were up to me I'd make it only for people who were born here, same for the Welfare State and free education.

Those demonstrators you see here are the drugged-up homeless and punks I used to see when I commuted in and out of Charing Cross station in those years. They were always being moved on by the Police, or arrested on drugs, so they hijacked the Poll Tax demo to get at the Police. I remember people saying so.
Maggie was right about a lot of things on the economy, and about trades unions, but the Poll Tax was a mistake. Too expensive for a lot of small earners.

From what I see, the civil unrest was far worse during Thatcher's decade in power - Miners strikes, Poll tax riots, Rupert Murdoch & the Wapping dispute, Football & general hooliganism... The '70's was used by Tories to bash the Labour party and Trade Unions.... that tactic worked in the 1980's and helped them get elected but by the late '90's and naughties, referring to winters of discontents and the seventies was irrelevant to a lot of voters, who weren't born or couldn't remember it.

@Karlzberg414 The Thatcher policies were pretty much an attempt by the Conservative party's most anti-social far right to roll back all the important social changes of the century. Divide and rule was the first order, so the Unions were broken by the full machinery of the state, the baton charge, harsh prison sentences for shop stewards, unemployent. Then it was the turn of the NHS and so on. The mistake they made with the poll tax was attacking everyone (except the richest 5 percent) at once.

Britain should mobilise and increase the TA. They should be only be used in the country to defend our country from the likes of "the enemy from within". There are plenty of them too. These troops should never be used overseas. That was never their purpose.
These demonstrators are very brave against Policemen but I wonder how brave they would be against armed British troops and light mechanised equipment.

Thatcher had thought about using troops on the mainland but her problem was most of the troops came from the same communities she wanted to control. This has been a problem for the establishment going back 200 years since the 'modern' police "force" service came into being.
The problem is now compounded in that the community could photograph and film and authoritarian approach and post it for all to see.
Just think what images would have been generated were the Poll Tax riots to happen today.

Good point Infidelity. The reason they abandoned national service in Britain was because, back in the late 1950's the establishment was frightened of communism. They didn't want the working class youth to be trained in the use of weapons and the art of warfare in case they turned against the state.

They charged up behind the Cheeseman's Department Store and came back slipping and sliding in a hasty and disorganised retreat. The demonstrators had covered the road in steel ball barings and the horses could not keep their 'feet'.

There is an argument as to whether Britain is a Democracy. The closest I can see is that it is described as a Parliamentary Democracy which some people think is not a true democracy in the modern sense of the word but a more Athenian notion of Democracy. Democracy for me but not for you might be the notion of the Establishment and Parliament keeps true power to itself.

Actually the police engineered the riot. Their only problem was that there were thousands of Tory supporters on the demo as well and when they got home after the event they decided then not to support Thatcher and she was soon gone. Got U suckered in have they not. I worked in an advice centre 4 Community Charge Information (Poll Tax) in the late 1980's. I handled telephone calls from all and sundry. Often I had small business owners on the line concerned about how their taxes were going up relative to those taxes on the larger companies. Many of these people said they were going to demonstrate. Most of them were natural Conservative Allies. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. Its U who need to widen your knowledge.

Justice is rarely upheld by the Courts. I have a deal of involvement with the courts and the one thing that happens is the poor are treated more harshly by the Courts than the Wealthy.
The issue of the Courts is a class thing. How many judges come from the poorest communities and how many from the wealthier communities?
Truth can only be found by all of us and one thing you aint interested in is the truth.
I've watched how the poor have been dealt with for over 40 years and it aint good.
