If one needs to understand the inner space then that becomes a purpose of life. This contradicts with the purposelessness of life that Swami is preaching.
Can someone explain?

From what I can tell, Swamiji doesn't actually mention the understanding of our inner space as a purpose. It's more a mode of thinking that frees us from assigning purpose to anything, and therefore lightens our spirit enough to reach blissfulness. Or more simply put: Inner peace has always been there within us - so it doesn't have to be achieved, it just needs to be uncluttered of all the goals we tend to cover it up with.
I'm not sure that helps, but I hope it did.
