I see the Olympics as a smart investment that will yield a huge return for BC. International tourists will want to visit after seeing BC's unspoiled natural splendour on TV at home. Dollars / Yen / Pounds / EUROs coming from outside our community will pay for all kinds of social programs. February is one of the worst months for hotel occupancy in Vancouver, and the City is sold out for the whole month. More wages and rooms tax are one current benefit, and I see billions of tourism $ to come.

As a non-resident living in Vancouver over the past few years, I've discovered this city has VERY serious problems, namely homelessness, drug, housing and shitty minimum wages. Could have the money from the Olympics been spent more wisely? Sure it could have. I think that the way the protesters are going about is perhaps a little too aggresive, but the overall message is still there.
Society as a whole hopefully will come to the realization that some of the world is way too rich, and most of the world is way too poor. Everyone has to work together to fix the root causes. The most effective way to protest is to ignore and not participate.

I've met with chiefs of Tsleil'waututh and the Musqueam, and they are proud to have the olympics (they are even against the protesters). I have also talked with the homeless, and their problems are not caused by the olympics. I hope that protesters will open their eyes and realize what pragmatic solutions actually are, instead of marching blindly down the violent streets.
I am a graduate of UBC, and have a major in Human/Social sciences and Engineering. I work on developing buildings for downtown, especially the eastside. I know Vancouver inside out. The problem is not that they need money to fund the housing; there are plenty of free housing available (not to mention food). The REAL problem is that the homeless do not want to go into those homes; they are busy using drugs, and begging for money for, not food, but more drugs (study done in 2009).
...that I did not "witness" the entire situation or accept their views. The protesters physically pushed me! Are they kidding? I asked the leader the same set of analytical questions on their morals, and she replied with completely blatant "You just don't understand"s or "You've been blinded"s, and protesters surround me again, so I fled in fear of my own safety. Lucky thing too, because I learned that the protest turned violent real quick.

I think many people forget or just have no clue and the only information they receive sadly are stereo types we (euro-canadians) have characterized them as. This assimilation didn't happen in the 1700's this was recent. The generations that went through this are still trying to cope from being torn away from their families and deal with the abuse they have suffered.
These residential schools main objective was to assimilate the Indigenous peoples culture family values and their way of life. While attending these schools (they were forced to attend) many Indigenous children suffered sexual abuse, violence and other forms of abuse. (These children were separated all school year from their parents) when the children returned they had trouble fitting in with their culture and could not fit in either world as they were taught to hate who they were.

Could have the money from the Olympics been spent more wisely? Sure it could have. I think that the way the protesters are going about is perhaps a little too aggresive, but the overall message is still there.
Society as a whole hopefully will come to the realization that some of the world is way too rich, and most of the world is way too poor. Everyone has to work together to fix the root causes. The most effective way to protest is to ignore and not participate.
Realizing what the Olympics truly are is just the tip of the iceberg of problems in modern day society.

I've met with chiefs of Tsleil'waututh and the Musqueam, and they are proud to have the olympics (they are even against the protesters). I have also talked with the homeless, and their problems are not caused by the olympics. I hope that protesters will open their eyes and realize what pragmatic solutions actually are, instead of marching blindly down the violent streets.

I am a graduate of UBC, and have a major in Human/Social sciences and Engineering. I work on developing buildings for downtown, especially the eastside. I know Vancouver inside out. The problem is not that they need money to fund the housing; there are plenty of free housing available (not to mention food). The REAL problem is that the homeless do not want to go into those homes; they are busy using drugs, and begging for money for, not food, but more drugs (study done in 2009).

I did see a Native woman in the video, but she was not opposing the games on the basis of stolen land; rather, she was discussing poverty which is an entirely separate issue. I'm not insulting (I think that is what you meant by insulating) people for protesting, but questioning the principles they advocate. After all First Nations elders have endorsed the games

maybe you should look at other clips then, there are MANY Native people involved with protesting the Games, on issues ranging from environmental destruction and native land rights, SOME first nation elders might have endorsed the games, many have not, many are directly involved with fighting the 2010 games, your comments about the protester were insulting in nature, that was pretty obvious, and ignorant, and my comprehension and communication skills are just fine thank you very much..

I work with a number of native people, the only thing I've grasped about these "Chiefs" and "Counsel Members" is that a large amount of them are corrupt.
Poverty and "Stolen Native Land" are interrelated issues. Displaced aboriginals often turn to substance abuse.
P.S. personal insulting people is a poor debating tactic.

People with jobs or family tend not to risk going to protests. Maybe the fact that there aren't any natives in that protest means something. Maybe they're, oh, I don't know, protesting for a reason?

@PartyLikeARock5tar At 0.58, you see a very good-looking native man holding the native unity flag (aka "Mohawk warrior" flag). His name is Jason Fleury, and he's a Saulteaux-Cree. He's 6'2", so he's kinda hard to miss. I know him personally (long story). The woman speaking next to him, Rose Henry, is a native woman and poor peoples' rights advocate. So if you didn't see any native protesters, then you wouldn't know a native person if you fell over one.

A few thousand dollars is a drop in the bucket. Homeless people need support to overcome their addiction.
It costs alot to rehabilitate, but it costs even more to persecute them. Costs to fund police, insurance from theft and vandalism and imprisoning them cost even more.

I think that a lot of them were taking pride in their country by expecting better than what the Olympics has to offer. I would want to see OUR tax money helping the poor, the sick, the elderly, the homeless, OUR CHILDREN, instead of this pomp - which further separates us by making a great event at the expense of social services, education and health.

The protesters are not making minimum wage workers suffer. The olympic closures will. Some businesses will be shut down for two weeks or more and employees will receive no wage compensation from anyone. People out their protesting are exercising their right as a canadian to have an opinion just like all you are on here. I like having freedom of speech. don't you?

I think many people forget or just have no clue and the only information they receive sadly are stereo types we (euro-canadians) have characterized them as. This assimilation didn't happen in the 1700's this was recent. The generations that went through this are still trying to cope from being torn away from their families and deal with the abuse they have suffered.

These residential schools main objective was to assimilate the Indigenous peoples culture family values and their way of life. While attending these schools (they were forced to attend) many Indigenous children suffered sexual abuse, violence and other forms of abuse. (These children were separated all school year from their parents) when the children returned they had trouble fitting in with their culture and could not fit in either world as they were taught to hate who they were.

1st the term is not Indians its Indigenous or 1st Nations people and they haven't been getting handouts for generations. If you take a look at Canada's history including the history of Indigenous peoples. you will see that they have actually been colonized, suppressed and many tribes have been assimilated by the canadian government.
