Phar Lap is an NZ bred, American owned, Australian trained horse. In all technicality, he's far more a Kiwi or Australian horse than an American horse! There wasn't a single thing he had to do with the US aside from his owner, and then his final races over there. Nothing American about him, and the book that publishes him as number 22 also published OTHER horses from other countries. It is simply a compilation of horses that raced in the US or were deemed 'rank worthy' enough.

An American did own him. Anyway, America has most of the other great horses. I think Ruffian was the best one. The only great non American horse that comes to mind is Kinscem. Sea Bird is considered the greatest of all time, but I'm no so sure.

Red Rum is also one of the greats! he won the grand national 3 times (he still has the record), an he did it with more weight on his back than most other horses had!

But it is true that Rummy didnt carry 'light' weights, an for a horse that wasnt very tall an that had to jump fences his own size, im guessin it took alot of effort and strengh! lol =) Considering that Crisp was bigger, i think this would ov helped him.

Fave? There are quite a few. I did like Deep Impact, although he flopped badly in the Arc. In the UK, there was Dancing Brave and Nijiinsky. In the US, Secretariat, Cigar, Sunday Silence (also sire of Deep Impact) and Ruffian. Phar Lap was before my time. Allez France was good. In Australia, Kingston Town and in New Zealand, Cardigan Bay. In Canada,. Northern Dancer.

nice choice! tbh most of them were before my time lol Rummy died in 1995 wen i was 4 years old. Desert Orchid died in 2006 wen i was 15 (but obviously Rummys racing career was already over by the time i was born an Orchid was at the end of his). i think Babaro would ov made a great racer, he died to young! =( hope his bros become as gd!

like u said tho, i hav loads to, i luv erm all. (even tho alot came before me lol!) its really hard to choose!

Good for you! Horse racing has been a passion of mine for many years. I think the only good one in recent years is Deep Impact, the Japanese horse. He absolutely smashed world records. The ones you mentioned were all greats. Don't forget the English horse Eclipse, who was considered unbeatable, and nearly every present day thoroughbred is descended from. The US still has the Eclipse Awards and England the Ecilpse Stakes, both named after this great horse.

i think it was so much better how they used to race horses back then (apart from the saftey on the track, thats got better obv.) but racers used to live alot longer back then (which is kinda disscustin considerein that we hav drugs to help nowadays), i think 1 of the reasons is coz they raced them at a later age

..... 2 years old, i think, is to young to race them, there bones havent developed prob. an this is wa courses weaker bones for the future (higher risk of a leg breakin). back then they would start racing them at round 5 years old (which i think is abo right, or lil bit younger) and they would hav alot longer racing career than they do now becuase of this (i think!) they raced more races, had a longer career in it before goin to stud and there was less injurys.
