I love the 11/8 groove you have going on here. I also love your snare sound. The way you have your snare tuned and are stricking the snare drum kinda gives you that Bill Bruford snare sound which is totally awesome, especially considering that Bill Bruford is the master of odd time signature drum patterns...
P.S. You should also experiment with 11/8 by playing a bar of 4/4 and 3/8. Example: 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 123 which equals 11/8 and post it.

Hey man, the snare i'm using is the 14" snare that comes stock with the pearl forum kit. It's quite a low standard snare but it can produce a nice sound! Your snare probably sounds quite poppy because it's a 10 by 6. Mabye try tuning it differently? thanks for the comment! :)

It's not the kit man, It's how you play it. Honestly it's all in tuning, and I can't tell what set he's using by the badge, but it sounds pretty damn good to me.

Are you serious right now? Basswood is just a lower quality maple. It's got fat, modern sound. Put some nice heads on that and spend time tuning and you have a decent kit. You know, less than 20 years ago most drumsets were made of the shittiest woods imaginable. The old Rich roger's kits had inner plys of poplar. Things like barring edges, seamless shells, even hardware material dont matter unless your recording in studios dailly. You need to play more man, if you think that's what matters.
Ive had my basswood set professionally tuned and it still has an echoey shitty sound. maybe thats just the kit though... Idk. And don't tell me to fucking PLAY MORE i play almost a half hour a day, a considerable amount of time for a student with a part time job. I never said I thought it was what mattered, so don't make baseless and stupid accusations. I just enjoy playing more when the kit sounds nice, everyone does.
There are also things you can add to drums to make them sound better, like the plastic dampening rings, etc. So it's not all up to tuning to make them sound good. Like, I'm not saying you should totally rely on external stuff. But still, if you've tuned them to the best of your ability and they still sound like crap, you can always turn to accessories to make them sound better. Even duct tape works—I just put layered strips all around the edges of my tom and snare heads and it worked wonders.

yesterday, my percussionist and me, jammed on 11/8...counted 1 2 3 1 2 3 (1)(2) 1 2 3.
the "coolest" groove i "discoverd" was something like a halftime schuffle.the only non-ghost note on the snare was the (2).
and there was a real messup on the bas pedal :)
ofcourse, the accent was on (1).
have you tried something simillar?
