I love the 11/8 groove you have going on here. I also love your snare sound. The way you have your snare tuned and are stricking the snare drum kinda gives you that Bill Bruford snare sound which is totally awesome, especially considering that Bill Bruford is the master of odd time signature drum patterns...

P.S. You should also experiment with 11/8 by playing a bar of 4/4 and 3/8. Example: 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 123 which equals 11/8 and post it.

@barbzzz08 11/4 would be a measure made up of 11 fourth notes. 11/8 would be a measure made up of 11 8 notes. 11/8 would, basically, be twice as fast as 11/4. Hope that helped.

@barbzzz08 11/8 is a way of writing it out so that it's essentially played in "Half" the time of 11/4, It's basically saying the same as it being 5.5/4, so that the bars are half as long.

@barbzzz08 The way that I like to think of it is as the way the beats are divided up. So in 11/4 you would have, for example, a rhythm that highlights the accents of 3 sets of 3 quarter notes followed by 1 set of 2 quarter notes, so basically 3/4 + 3/4 + 3/4 + 2/4. And in 11/8 you would have a rhythm that highlights the accents of 3 sets of 3 eighth notes followed by 1 set of 2 eighth notes, or 3/8 + 3/8 + 3/8 + 2/8. I like to think of it as the freedom it allows you -11/4 = more, 11/8 = less.

yesterday, my percussionist and me, jammed on 11/8...counted 1 2 3 1 2 3 (1)(2) 1 2 3.

the "coolest" groove i "discoverd" was something like a halftime schuffle.the only non-ghost note on the snare was the (2).

and there was a real messup on the bas pedal :)

ofcourse, the accent was on (1).

have you tried something simillar?

hey man this is actually really helpful in my attempt to try and understand different time signatures. The best way to learn is just to see it be done and done well. nice job...question: 1)i count your kick on the 3-4-5, 3-4-5-6. Is that correct? and your snare on the 2. The groove moves kindof fast so its hard to follow.

2) what style of music do you predominately play? and what do you recommend at a starting point for those just beginning to experiment with odd signatures?

Hey man, the snare i'm using is the 14" snare that comes stock with the pearl forum kit. It's quite a low standard snare but it can produce a nice sound! Your snare probably sounds quite poppy because it's a 10 by 6. Mabye try tuning it differently? thanks for the comment! :)

Are you serious right now? Basswood is just a lower quality maple. It's got fat, modern sound. Put some nice heads on that and spend time tuning and you have a decent kit. You know, less than 20 years ago most drumsets were made of the shittiest woods imaginable. The old Rich roger's kits had inner plys of poplar. Things like barring edges, seamless shells, even hardware material dont matter unless your recording in studios dailly. You need to play more man, if you think that's what matters.

Ive had my basswood set professionally tuned and it still has an echoey shitty sound. maybe thats just the kit though... Idk. And don't tell me to fucking PLAY MORE i play almost a half hour a day, a considerable amount of time for a student with a part time job. I never said I thought it was what mattered, so don't make baseless and stupid accusations. I just enjoy playing more when the kit sounds nice, everyone does.

There are also things you can add to drums to make them sound better, like the plastic dampening rings, etc. So it's not all up to tuning to make them sound good. Like, I'm not saying you should totally rely on external stuff. But still, if you've tuned them to the best of your ability and they still sound like crap, you can always turn to accessories to make them sound better. Even duct tape works—I just put layered strips all around the edges of my tom and snare heads and it worked wonders.

thanks alot mate! it's just a sabian solar ride, 20" i think. it's such a bog standard cymbal but I really like it! i aslo have a sabian XS ride which alot more expensive but I prefer the solar! as you said, it crashes nicely + the bell aint too shabby for a cheap cymbal. cheers for the commmment!

well... 8 time is counted in 3s.

can be counted in triplets if its an even meter... but if its not an even meter, then every eighth note gets a beat. 3/8 time would be ---> 1,2,3/1,2,3...etc.

This would be 1,2,3,4-11.

But when I play it, I count to 4 and start over and finish with a 3 at the end of the measure.

So 1,2,3,4 1,2,3,4 1,2,3/ repeat.

hey man thanks :) to be perfectly honest I'm not sure how I have it tuned, I really need to learn how to tune my drums properly! All I can tell you is that it's tuned very low, just enough to let the skin be tense across the drum (if that makes any sense haha!)
