This is a very interesting documentary!!! And that Forensic Lip Reader is just amazing! It's absolutely incredible how she can do that and how she can talk and listen to people without the use of sign language.
i have studied the Somme for years ..the part where the lady makes the long dead talk spooked me... where the soldier says jesus ,jesus, and he needs carrying..fantastic ,,fantastic ,,then the lancs in the sunken road actually talking,,he will probably be dead in 1 hours time in the battle for Beaumont Hammel...QUIS SEPRABIT...SEPTION JUNCTION IN UNO
How incredible how she was able to interpret what th soldiers were sayin'at th time......amazing. It surely was touching...... Sad to know what happened to to almost all of them, but I am absolutely stunned to have known or hear about what they had said while they were bein'recorded on film.
What? The Germans didn't want war more than the French and the Russians did. Kaiser Wilhelm II telegrammed Czar Nicholas II for hours on end, back and forth, in a vain attempt to stop Russian from mobilizing against Austria, because by interlocking alliances it would mean war with Germany.
I absolutely agree with the thoughtful remarks of NotoriousMannk. The men who died in the trenches would, I suspect, prefer to be remembered as men who tried to do their duty as they perceived it, rather than be regarded as foolish, sheeplike victims. It astonishes me that so many people today seem happy to blame just about anyone except the obvious cause, which is the vile code of Prussian militarism.
@loveaction12 Coulda, woulda, shoulda, but no. France wanted to retake Alsace-Lorraine, England wanted to dominate the ocean, Russian leaders wanted to waste their people for some kind of aristocratic sport, and the US wanted to sell fuel to the fire. My opinion of Germany's history doesn't do a 180 degree about-face until Hitler comes into play.
This series is proving to be more and more amazing with each one I view. The lady reading the lips of the soldiers was absolutely amazing! THAT blew me away. It was really wild, and cool. You always see those documentaries, and being a veteran myself, I've always kind of wondered what the men might have been saying. Absolutely awesome segment here.
It winds me up how people feel qualified to speak on behalf of the actual soldiers with attitudes worlds apart from the soldiers. These men grew up believing in their cause, nation, and they took pride in the job they did, unit and courage. I dont think they would have taken too kindly to someone who never knew them making comments. They never wanted sympathy. We should not judge them by what Sassoon or Owen wrote. At least they had something they were willing to die for.
very true but you also have to keep in mind alot of them had no other choice if you tryed fleeing, well it was off to the firing squads with you... and even people who suffered from shellshock because it was not known at the time again the firing squads... but without a doubt these men were some of the most brave bunch of people of our time and just ignore the americans they seem to ignore the people that fought the hardest in both wars
@RamzyJB666 absolutely but again it was a different era and from accounts I have listened to soldiers were often unsympathetic toward shell shock and deemed it mere cowardise, often putting unit rep first. I guess we cant take a view that the average tommy was a more civilised advanced human being than the officer class.
rip guys ignore the fucking jelouse americans who never realy took any part in ww1..they were only in it a year what would they know about war nothing....history
@imachristian100 Too bad we got involved at all. Had we not you Europeans might have slaughtered two generations instead of only one and we could have avoided your 1930s and 1940s bullshit as well.
I always found these clips fascinating when I watched them before but now that we can make out what is being said in some scenes, it really does take them to a new level as a historical source.
That lady is filled with half-bullshits; watching an old footage of a group of soldiers filmed at a distance, how does she know if one of them doesn't say: "This *$^%#$@!! war in a waste, and my girlfriend is at home, probably &$^#^!! -ing my neighbor in my own bed!!!"
Maybe because she has more skills than you? I mean, if you are deaf, you never waste time listening to idiots or stupid TV spots. So you have more time to study and make something of yourself.
That's because people of every nation that took part want to tell everybody their country did the most, in a disgusting attempt to somehow make themselves feel superior to people of other nationalities.
Think of it as when country A wins more gold medals at the olympics than country B. People of country A say "We won more gold than you", in an attempt to steal credit from the men and women who actually won them, and make themselves feel superior to people from country B.
This places all horror films into total oblivion. Voices from the dead - maybe they need to not try and resurrect this. Their souls may come back earth and wander these fields forever.
ok what the hell are you talking about? "wondering the fields forever." These are men that fought and died on the field of battle. They aren't coming back as zombies or ghosts or any of that bs. They're dead and they're in Heaven. Simple as that. Their souls are at rest with God they ain't ghosts or wanderers or w/e the fuck u said. It's sickening to dishonor their memories saying they'll come back. They won't so get over it and stop watching so many stupid films. Ur fucking up. Lol.
Take your filth and your retarded potty comments, go and sit on the toilet and entertain yourself. When you have served and experienced death around you, then you will understand.
I suggest you also visit these battlfield sites and you will have a different perspective on matters and not take comments totally out of context.
Until then grow up and educate yourself on how to write properly not using street trash vernacular. Maybe that is being optimistic, since you are obviously retarded.
what the hell are you talking about???? You want to talk about street trash?? How about you and your pathetic filth about soldiers coming back from the dead and ghosts and all that bullshit. It's called having respect for those that lay their lives on the line and you go and disrespect them by saying their souls will wander the earth and all that crap. Yeah ok. Look here and take this education: they aren't wandering no fields or any of where else to support your ghost belief crap.
So then tell me, General Haig who sent millions of these men to a needless death is resting with a clear conscience right now.
Live he be able to look at those men in heaven without any remorse. Since you believe in Heaven, which I do, there is a hell. I repect those soldiers by not resurrecting the dead. Let the dead lay and remember them in your hearts not by recreating the past and trying to speak with them
You are pathetic filth by resurrecting the past .
Their lives were already disrespected when they were ordered to attack machine guns head on. I would not want to live that disrespect the rest of my life.
Their lives were ALREADY needlessly wasted asshole - HELLO - WHO IS TO BLAME.
The whole idea is to let them live and not try and communicate with the dead.
what the hell are you talking about???? Funny you should mention that. So who believes in spirits???????
I did not send those men to a needless death. We learn from their sacrifices not to repet the same mistakes. Something inside of me is not right when I see attempts made to communicate with the dead. Is there a middle groung between Heaven + Hell - Perhaps. I would not want to be General Haig and try to explain what I did to those slaughtered men. Heaven would def. be not a welcome place.
@architectdesigner11 I dont really get the point. Just because she is lip-reading an old footage, that doesnt mean she is communicating with the dead!
And another thing. This isn't some horror film Freddy Krueger shit. These are men that died on the field of battle for something they believed in. They should be honored and not dishonored by saying they'll come back from the dead or some bull shit like that.
..cont..i do also agree that they did have a very basic education, but there was officers in our regiments that had come through the ranks as well, and many of these officers did die alongside there men, these men who the german generals considered as Lions led by Donkeys, how right they were.
HI There, the lancashire dialect was very rough and harsh at that poimt in time, and could be taken by a lip reader as being very dim, unintellegent if you get my meaning, the words she read would be sort of slang spoken, hope that helps you.

It is great how those soldiers in those films have been silenced for over 90 years and now they finally are heard. The words of a possible deceased soldier that long ago.
the lip reading thing is amazing. a good thing to have on this kind of documentary too cos i think it humanises them more than putting names to the faces
The lip-reading thing is a really good segment on this documentary. Shame that they couldn't have included more in the programme as it's an interesting aspect to look at.

My god. What an amazing documentary, I can't believe the lip reading.. I've never known anything so touching. It's like being able to get a brief insight into what was going through these brave men's minds.
He might seem like he's made a bit of a niche market for himself but on this occasion I'd have to agree with him. I'm a maxillofacial surgeon...faces are my job too. Even before he said it I'd already decided that the shape of the jaw was clearly all wrong. Therefore, I'm sorry to say that also in my humble(but professional) opinion you are wrong...and he's right. They are not the same person.
Derin. Could you please explain exactly what your job is? It's title and what you would typically do on a day to day basis. I just find it fascinating.
Also, what made you decide to get into it and how did you start?
i had to pause the film just to say how absolutely chilling that last part was...amazing...hearing her speak as his lips moves produced a feeling that i can only describe as haunting...as if those words were not meant for me and i had no right to listen
The lip reading was fantastic. Literally having history come 'alive' like that is incredible. Goes to show they were all real blokes that hated the place...not lifeless figures on a sketchy piece of film.

I may be wrong here folks, but at exactly 0:09 and again at 0:56, the "expert" is trying to compare the faces in the two photographs.
But SURELY the photos on the right, are too far forward!..........the face in this photo, is almost twice as big as the other one.
Of course the lines won't match up ffs!!
Am i the only one who thinks that the photo on the left, needs to be brought more up to scale with the others?
I certainly wouldn't go by this evidence!!
