This and similar demonstrations/experiments get harder and take longer to explain the less you know about light and electromagnetic properties and transmission....people go to school for years to try to adequately grasp concepts in quantum physics and electromagnetism. reflection, diffusion and what it even means for us to see whatever it is we think we're seeing. this is accomplished with the use of "total internal reflection"
