  • i'm going to Alaska one day......one day.

  • My ears had an orgasm...

  • beautiful

  • shit

  • do you not get the idea of INTERPRETATION?

  • not feeling this. The lyrics just sound strange when accompanied by soft and slow music. The mm version is just so great because it just so in your face. I feel like Issac's telling me to fuck off every time I listen to trucker's atlas. And it's fucking awesome.

  • WTF did I just listen to?

  • "I don't feel and it feels great,"....my favorite quote.

  • Really like the picture they've got up. Usually it's something cheesy but it's just perfect this time.

  • Tailin? message me ClasHouse

  • bitch bitch bitch. I was in Modest Mouse years ago. Last year SKM stole my heart. Why can't people just listen? I can't imagine arguing while this song is playing.

  • The Modest Mouse version is so much better. Issac's delivery with the screaming and everything gives it so much more emotion, compared to this which feels boring and emotionless. In this case abrasive is better.

  • @zakB121

It's so great that you said that, you should take a career in saying that, you could fill auditoriums, maybe flesh it out into a lecture or something. Don't stop saying that, lots of love from Scotty x

  • I think Elliot Smith would make a good cover R.I.P

  • i like both. the mm version is good travelling music, and then this song is good chilling music. they're both amazing though, and both my favorite songs.

  • ugh....... hes so good at covers..... i mean if you want blood is amazing and this is freakin awesome... i love how he makes covers of songs he likes and doesnt give a fuck. it shows he makes music because he feels like it not because he needs money, or shit like that.

  • I vote that Sun Kil Moon makes another Blue Heron-like song.

  • For some reason i only like this guy when its only the singer and an acoustic guitar.. does sun kil moon have a lot of songs like that? sorry new to the band

  • Why don't we have decent singers like Kozelek here in Britain?! :(

  • @gunsandtanks

Leave music to "fat lazy Americans".

  • @gunsandtanks wait this kids kiding right?! ok let me make a list of amazing british singers.. well the bands there in anyways.. muse, the subways, coldplay, mumford and sons, adelle, blok party, blood red shoes..... yeah britain... no talent what so ever..... just pointin out the obvious

  • @downwithcheesecake Erm . . .I'm English, very very very English but you forgot to point out our good acts :P No I'm messing they are good . . . Some of them . . . Ok there really is more you could have used! I am sorry I don't mean to be like this but come on "Blood Red Shoes" really? Joy Division didn't cross your mind? The Rolling Stones? The Who? The Kinks? Eric Clapton?

I would like to point out, this is an amazing song and I love SKM's take on it.

  • @enterkolwnsmind yeah.. there good but iam not really into the classics anymore and who watching a sun kil moon video wouldnt know the rolling stones eric clapton and the who?? but i take no offence in your reply these are good bands just not my bands...

  • @downwithcheesecake Haha Coldplay. What is this a gay bar?

  • @GreyAlaska O.o what?? are you saying coldplay is only for gay ppl... disrespectful.... and super stupid of you because coldplay is good.. -.-

  • Beautiful, Kozelek is a unique and necessary voice in American music. No one complains about Hendrix covering the Star Spangled Banner. It is a noble tradition. If you want another killer Kozelek cover check out Red House Painters cover of Wings song Silly Love Songs. Killer.

  • omg this is horrible compared to the original. Im not sayin "oh only originals are better." But his voice had terrible emotion he sounds so dronined and moaned out like he dont really care bout the lyrics really

  • I love MM's version because its very energetic and something about Issac's voice gives you that simultaneous happy/sad feeling, as a lot of their songs do, but this version draws me in. I mean, I cant read a book or do something else when I listen to this song, its like I have to just listen to it and absorb it...I don't know if that makes sense, but those that know what i mean will know what i mean...if you know what i mean :-D

  • Those that can - do

    Those that can't - cover

  • @thepfcictwo Modest Mouse covered a song by Santo & Johnny.

  • The problem I have with SKM is that all the songs sound the same.

  • These versions are okay, and it's great to see other bands take on MM (my favorite band). And yet, there is something missing. For those who "Can't quite get into MM" just give it time. There were some songs along the way I wasn't sure if I liked, and now they are my favorites. Isaac Brock's vocal style takes a little to get used to, but the emotion he puts into his songs is incredible.

SKM's versions are missing that pure, raw sound that puts Modest Mouse miles above its competition on my ipod

  • dude..Mark Kozelek is amazing...so is Isaac Brock but I love sun kil moon there is no comparison...this version is the best, Mark's voice is the best fit for this song ...awesome..

  • Oh, this is a damn disappointing cover.

  • WOW..... and I thought I hated pauly d... but this shit is a bit much to deal with.

  • devoid of any sort of feeling

  • Lonesome Crowded West is one of the absolute best MM albums! This cover definitely confirms that MM will end up being one of the more secretly influential band of my generation.

  • i love the simplicity of this video...what a great song...i really really love this...thanks

  • i cried and vommitted when he said "get ice for fucking free and we all dead"

  • @DIGFOOL And I don't have a clue when he said that.

  • god this is horrible. h8 all u want people who like this shit. but this has none of the emotion, the intensity or anyhting that makes this song kick ass. funny how its half the size too

  • @DIGFOOL i absolutly agree

  • The instrumental part itself is nice, but with Isaac's lyrics it's just boring really. Modest Mouse is dynamic, while all these Sun Kil Moon covers are boring and all sound the same. There's also something about mark's voice that annoys me. It's almost as if he's whining.

  • :D F*CKING AMAZING

  • Is there a better early morning driving song?

  • Comment removed

  • I actually think this is better than the modest mouse version. Purely because I think the lyrics suit a smoother, calmer tune.

  • Best cover I've heard in years!

  • I looked at the picture right as he said the line in it. Weird.

  • Beautiful! Thanks for sharing it!

  • @subtractthegrizzly23 word. this is total garbage. makes me sick. i hope this guy made no money off this shite

  • I don't think the two can really be compared, they're completely different songs.

  • i hate this it sucks modest mouse is dieing alil bit

  • its just so beautiful. i have to think i like this one tons better than the original. but its not a competition really....but if it were, this one. hands down. georgeous.

  • personally i dont think it'll ever be MM but fair play Sun Kil Moon some of the best covers ive ever heard

  • no u

  • Both songs are so good...

  • beautiful. way to channel beautiful lyrics into your own, :)

  • all of you people saying this is better than the original are fucking crazy. if it wasn't for isaac and his prophetic lyrical talents, this song would be nothing but soft, plucky kozelek acoustic guitar. that being said, it's a really pleasant cover to listen to... long live MM

  • Infinitely better than the original.

  • The point of doing a cover is to say you love the song so much you want to play it.

  • @bigtallcubsfan Agreed. It is for that reason that it's hard for me to completely not respect any cover of a song that I already like.

  • This is far, far better than the original. Mark's stuff is the best that has come from America for many, many years, for some reason most people tend to disagree - weird :)

  • I dont know about that. Sure they are both good in their own right. But the pretty structured aspect of this song is not rockin like the song was intended by Modest Mouse.

  • @ghosthunterJ but still has a great tone to it,right?

  • perfect picture for this song...great choice =)

  • the point in a cover is to take a song and make it your own... if you take a song and do it exactly the same then your just wasting time lol... i love the originals but i also love these covers it makes a second song to enjoy also

  • Lmao...

It doesn't have to, and it's not supposed to.

  • what do you mean?

  • The point of making a cover is not to surpass the original, but to pay homage. Of course, usually, the original is better than the cover, but that's not the point.

  • no the point of a cover is to do the song your own way otherwise your wasting peoples time and your own....you have to add something of your own style put your mark on it otherwise theres no point in covering it

  • Yeah, well...that's the other half of doing a cover....but, I didn't think I needed to elaborate on that...that half goes without saying.

  • I think that was the point of the album. None of his covers sound anything like Modest Mouse wrote them and that's what makes them interesting to listen to. I think he was brilliant in being able to take such energetic songs and turn them something so haunting. Where's the -creativity- in covering a song note for note?

  • Eh. Each to their own. But you can't really say it was uncreative of Kozelek to make all the covers "sound the same" because the sound is his -style-. One could say MM's songs "sound the same" because of their style, but that would be silly and untrue, yes? :)

  • I don't listen to too much music. When I listen to music, my mind makes a picture out of the sound. My two favorite bands are Passion Pit and Modest Mouse because the way mind my perceives them. When I listen to Sun Kil moon's versions, they make horribly aesthetically displeasing images. It's hard to describe. You understand?

  • Maybe you should start listening to more music.

  • maybe you should watch surgery videos.

  • Perfect choice for a road trip cd!

  • Ehh it's good , but there is some parts of the song that I really think need the intensity of the type of way the MM plays.

I obviously think that the original is far better, but this is a interesting take of it.

  • Sun Kil Moon can make traffic jams enjoyable provided you have a clean sounding stereo....

  • A beautiful song. Always reminds me of driving on Hwy 1 from San Fran to Portland last summer... through the Red Wood forest. You picked the perfect image.

  • Your mother wouldn't appreciate the greatness of Mark!

  • Again, if you want to say something do it in a civil manner and perhaps some reason.

    Otherwise you needn't bother commenting.

  • @svix123 lol

  • I see no similarity between this and the original version besides lyrics and overall structure. Two totally different animals.

This is beautiful, though I will always prefer the dynamics of the original. At least this is something I might be able to share with my mother (She would hate Modest Mouse's version).

  • This is far superior to the original imo.

  • I prefer the versions by SKM. Mostly because I cannot really get into Modest Mouse. Hearing Mark sing the lyrics allows me to better appreciate them, thus making it clear to me that Issac Brock is a great lyricist. However, I am not a fan of the delivery, sounds, and styles that Modest Mouse chooses to use. It just doesn't do much for me.

  • @Cortisol agreed!!!

  • Sun Kil Moons versions IMO are all better than the originals, but thats just my taste I suppose. I think the lyrics stand out more, and it gives it a very introspective feeling that I love.

  • but in the originals, the music adds to the meaning, usually by creating a setting and mood. I feel SKM really dropped the ball in that aspect. the music feels generic, especially for something so ambitious as an mm cover.

  • Its good for people who don't happen to like Modest Mouse, yet love Sun Kil Moon.

    Like me.

  • I love both. Its good that the lyrics are still getting out there.

  • am i missing something? this is fine but it doesn't come close to the greatness of the original.

  • I don't feel and it feels great <33

  • I love modest mouse but I personally think the SKM's cover version is BETTER than the original. Outstanding job particularly with this song which I absolutely love.

  • This cover's amazing, I've been coming back to listen to it for the past 6 months. Who gives a shit if some of the lyrics don't fit the mood Mark sets, I actually think it makes his cover even more unique. Isaac Brock's lyrics go well with any style anyway because they're just that brilliant. The instrumentation is so haunting and beautiful in this version, it's every bit as genius as the original.

  • I uploaded this in late 07. It's now early 09 and I enjoy how I get something new from the song as time goes on.

  • @svix123

I can't agree with you more..

  • @irvingcsaltzburg REMAKE, not cover. But yeah. sunkil is the only that could every remake mmouse and get props.

  • mark kozelek is a master of covers. his whole point is to take AWAY the original purpose of the song and reinvent it. you just don't get it, accountfrozen. check out his ac/dc covers for example and see how he gives a whole new life to some classics songs.

  • "you ain't got a hold on me"

  • whats under the moom is epic ac dc covers mk is genius i agree

  • This calmness kind of takes away the purpose of the song.

Honestly, if you're going to make a song that different, just write your own lyrics.

  • I agree - and I'll go further by saying I don't like this album apart from never ending math equation. It's boring if you need emotive and beautiful listen to the originals!

  • Personally, I much prefer Sun Kil Moon's version to Modest Mouse's. But there's no best in music, enjoy what you enjoy and listen to the music that speaks to you.

  • my thoughts exactly, slimjin. its an interesting and understandably made experiment, they just cant pull it off completely.

  • The photo fits the song exactly.

  • this song is really good A+

  • This Sun Kil Moon cover had been in my mind every day for a few months...

    Hi from Barcelona! Nice photo

  • i just bought this album and it's awesome. It's like, you want to listen to MM but you don't want to raise your blood pressure so you listen to Sun Kil Moon instead.

  • Heh, the picture is just one I found off google images and the text is from the song I just put in.

  • Where that picture from, i want it !

  • Well, I don't know about that; I've never heard of Modest Mouse

I do like this album a lot - this song is a really strong - I bought it cos I heard Space Travel Is Boring on the BBC online, and it was SUCH a strong song

Have to sort out what key thats in

"Read a paperback and I wanna come home soon.."

  • i like this cover stuff, that these guys perform. kudos to them. but, in response to some of these posters....this song belongs to the mouse. no doubt about it.

  • This the only one of SKM covers that I prefer to the MM original. All the covers are great and worthwhile, but don't have Isaac's madness which is part of what lit up the songs in the first place. But for this one it's just more melodic and beautiful.

  • This song just makes me lose myself.

  • there, there people... no need to cry everytime u hear a good song...

  • I think the meaning about this song is completely lost in this version. Yeah, it's really nice and gentle sounding but that's not what this song is about.

I'm pretty sure trucker's atlas was an angsty song about how he was snorting lines of coke of a truckers atlas. He talks about being numb (I don't feel and it feels great), doing lines, and he even says something about knowing the 'lingo.' If you listen to the original with a bit of drug knowledge, I think you could make the connection

  • Essentially, I think this sounds nice, etc, but that's all it seems to me. Just a nice sounding song with some nice sounding words that lost it's meaning when it was rewritten.

  • Tmtidg you are more than welcome to take a literal approach to the lyrics but it is worth while to accept that more abstract meaning can be derived. Proclaiming the literal interpretation to be the only valid path of meaning is in my opinion quite plainly arrogant.

  • I'm not sure that by refusing to derive unintentional meaning someone is showing ignorance, but I know what you mean. I am a very artistic person who tries to appreciate meaning, but it's hard for me to do so in an instance like this.

This version varies greatly from the original, and for me to appreciate it would take a whole new mindset that I don't feel like putting the energy into committing to right now.

I was not saying that you shouldn't like the song, simply why I can't.

  • @svix123 how about you ask isaac u can almost guarantee it was not coke they were snorting....washington... meth....

  • This song makes me want to cry.

  • i love this version its fantastic. infact every track is brilliant, SKM's interpritation is fantastic. but this song is utilized by length and not by its ellegance. its ment to be repetative. And christ wheres the sweet ass drums?

  • /watch?v=lK299GjTfO8

    Drums!

  • One of my favorite songs of all time. Strangely, I could care less about MM's version; this is the version that speaks to me.

  • ya, I prefer this version too. . .I suppose its really not about what is 'origional' and what is not but rather its about how its done.

  • Stupid comments will be deleted.

If you want to say something put two braincells together and at least try to sound sophisticated.

Intelligent debate is welcomed, retards flaming and arguing is not. I will forever oppress and marginalize idiots in my grasp.

Thanks and have a nice day.

  • I think Sun Kil Moon's versions sound better than the original from Modest Mouse.

  • It depends a lot on my mood at the time, some times I like listening the mellow sounds of mark but other times I prefer Isaac.

The point I'm trying to make is that no one is stopping anybody from liking both.

  • not meant to be delivered like this i dont think..........but it's alright.....i can see where you scrutinize him for not singing his own lyrics

  • I respect your opinion, though I disagree with it. The beauty of covering a song is that you can now take what only appealed to a certain group of people and expand it exponentially.

Whether one likes the original, the cover or neither is the individuals opinion. I think it is the utmost of arrogance to deny someone the chance of discovering something they will like based on ones personal preference.

  • Is this a Modest Mouse cover

    Who are Modest Mouse

Beautiful song regardless; I heard Space travel is boring on the BBC site and had to pick up the album

Know nothing about the group tho - is Sun Kill Moon a side project of the Painter guy, any other albums as good as Tiny Cities?

  • My favorite song on the album, kinda duking it out with Space Travel Is Boring!

    Thankyou for posting

  • Very Different put quite nice

  • both beautiful

    x

  • PS: Do you think you can eventually upload the entire album? I'd like to hear MK's take on more MM songs.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Good twist on the MM version. Gives it a whole new view.

  • Constructive comments are appreciated.

Destructive comments are not and will be removed. If you want to express your feelings please do so in an acceptable and thoughtful way. Otherwise shut the fuck up.

  • Well, all I can say at 44 is that having listened to music since I was 2, Kozelek reaches in and grabs something very old and basic in my life and blows away layers of bullshit.

  • Been a fan of Mark and Red House Painters since the early 1990's and he's really hit his stride with this album of MM covers. Brock's writing and Mark's interpretations make a wonderful combination...wildly disparate but effective.

  • I love his guitar and how calming his voice is... but Isaac has this sarcasm/don't care tone in his voice that he can't achieve.

  • absolutely love sun kil moon. Tiny Cities is probably my favorite record he's done, not to take away from his own stuff, Ghosts of the great highway is an AMAZING album too..but for someone who is known for being unintelligible to cover a band that is known for being unintelligible.. and making it sound this good.. man. i listen to both records daily at least once.

  • Yeah it is very special.

I also enjoy Mark Kozelek's old band (Red house painters). It is enjoyable to see how his style has changed and progressed.

  • Its a fair point

    The lyrics are pretty unintelligible

Song seems to be more about feeling

    John Martyn sings similar (slurred)

  • i am a massive modest mouse fan and it is a delight to the hear their songs not only covered, but reinvented in such a way that the other artist has made it his own.

Is this featured on an album?

  • Yes it is on an album.

    Album name: Tiny cities

    Artist: Sun Kil Moon

I'm also a fan of modest mouse :)

  • Tiny Cities is his album, its all modest mouse covers. He perfects every single MM song.

Also, "Whats next to the moon" is a great album, all AC/DC covers. Its amazing to hear someone deconstruct ACDC. They really have some beautiful songs underneath. But i guess thats Mark's whole point in doing the covers albums.

I've got my ticket to see him June 13th here in NYC :)

  • Thanks for the comments guys they are much appreciated. I hope that for every person who listens to this song gets something out of it.

  • The soundtrack for that one great roadtrip we all dream of doing one day....

  • Beautiful song

  • wow this is nice
