A person I knew, not that I'd call him a close friend, was stabbed after he was mugged, roughly three years ago. He underwent a surgery but died shortly after due to multiple wounds to the lower abonmen.

And as for myself, I had one situation where the assilants were pretty much intent on dispatching me, and I could be well dead if not having made the right decision to run for my life.
