@fondjadidi You know I actually know a lot about horses and I am not against giving horses treats, but if you feel the only way to show affection to a horse is to spoil them so much by giving them treats all the time, then you must be the one who doesn't know much about horses. There are many ways to show horses affection without giving them treats and yes many people have different ways when treating their horses.
I am not against giving horses treats, but you said in one of your comments that everytime you go out to see your horses you give them treats. And what I was trying to say that it seems that your horses are just coming to you because they know that you have something for them to eat, not because they want to say hi to you. And that's just my opinion.
@MoranaLeFay Horses are creature of habit. Ya, I give them treats every time I see them, but it's my routine. My friend gives my horse treats too, but he doesn't start neighing when she get's to the barn, nor does he go up to her all the time. We both spoil each others horses, but he's still shows more affection with me. It's nice, he calls out to me and weather or not it is for food, he's still doing it for me, and not everyone else who treats him. (the horse on here is actually my mothers) :-)
@shawnalarose It's stupid that people say hes only just coming for the treat, of course it started out that way but now he just does it to see you and the running and the treat is just a plus for excitement
@fonjadidi :-) Thanks!! My boy (not this horse) normally always walks over half way, stops, empties out (poops) then neighs and walks over to me. The other day he emptied out, went for water and then walked over to my friends horse and stood there. I closed the gait, turned my back and he neighed with his head straight up as thought to say "HEY, Where you going?" My friend laughed so hard at the look he gave me for turning my back. I left him there, refused to go get him (I was tired and lazy)
You know it is really sad that the only way you can get your horses to come to use is to use treats. You would know this if you really knew about horses, you should treat them like a horse not like a dog and just give them treats just because they came to you.
@MoranaLeFay Wow.. Aren't you just the young judgmental type. Heaven forbid I treat my horses!! Look kid, horses have been part of my life for my entire life. Some chose to not treat, some do. I'm the percentage that does. It's called spoiling them a little, big woop. As long as they take them nicely, there is no harm in treating them. Anyone who knows horses also know that many people have many different ways of doing things. Doesn't make one wrong from the other. Look around..Learn!!
@MoranaLeFay If you knew ANYTHING about horses you would know that they also need to feel loved! and giving them treats is building a bond with your horse.
@siarrahbabey14 I give them treats every time they come over to me. If they don't come, I go get them and give them their treat once back at the gate... It's not an every time thing.. Depends on the day and their mood.. lol Wish I could say I had them trained to do it, but it's just up to them..
Of course, that's how you train them to always want to come... Like I commented 10months ago.. reward them even when you don't take them in and they will always want to come to see you.. Not always run of course, but running to me is a bonus!!!
My horse will do that too. From all the way back. That's about 20 acres.Give her a minute and then here she comes. She came from day one. But now I do give a treat once in a while. Just a halter to ride. She follows me."Hugs" "kiss" my forehead and for some reason pats my head with her chin like GOOD HUMAN! WELL DONE! pat pat..yeah I'm that short..and she gets water in her mouth and catch my back turned WET BACK!. Click my name to see my best friend. And your horses are awesome! ♥ ♥ ♥
Thanks... :-) Gotta love when they do come a running... My youngest usually comes to me, not always running though.. But when he doesn't I just call in another horse and he tends to get jealous, neigh then come over!! lol.. Funny how they can get so jealous!!
Anytime I go see them I give them a treat, even when I'm not bringing them in.. This way they know they will always be rewarded when they see me. As for running over, I can't teach that, they just pick and chose when they want to run.. lol.. I was just lucky to have the camera for this particular day!!
my last horse did that and i got a new filly 3weeks ago and she comes running when i call her too, you would never find me running round a field lol. (carrots help though haha)
I just give him a carrot every time he comes over even on the days I'm not bringing him in.. This way he learns that as long as he comes over he'll get something. He doesn't usually run, but does most of the time walk over to me.
lol.. Back in high school we had to do an essay on a documentary book. So I picked horses.. WELL, what a dumb book, it said that horses do not know their names, that they should be ridden 6 days a week 2hrs a day, the EXACT amount of feed to give (ya, like they all should be on the SAME amount) I was shocked at how this book was even published, there was so much wrong information... I ended up doing most of my essay on my own personal knowledge..
Doesn't matter who calls my horses by name, my voice or a new voice, they look and usually come over as well!!! Anyone who says they don't know their names don't know horses.. haha!! :)
Me and my husband are experiencing our first foal..(2nd horse added to our family of animals)and we named her *CHEVY* just thought it was neat to come across your video and hear that name!! LOL!! Take care..
I always give them a treat when I they get to the gait. If i have to get them, they don't get it till they get to the gait and also if I'm going to get one of my other horses and one comes over I'll give them a treat even if I'm not getting them, so they learn that coming over means treats, but not necessarily work. Unfortunately it won't work for all.. :)
Where my family and i go on holidays about 3 times a year, there is a white mare about 100 metres from where we stay and the owners dont look after her properly!! everytime we go i take treats and brushes (actual horse ones) and give her a good brush that she doesnt really get....but the neighbour of the owner feeds her everyday too ...ive been in her paddock and she rolls over on her back and waits for you to pat her belly lol ..and when i walk or run near the fence she follows
As if... Thats funny.. in 27yrs I've never seen a horse lay for a belly rub.. She must think she's a dog.. lol... I've had horses follow me like a puppy, but thats it.. One girl I knew trained her horse to play dead though.. She'd say bang, he'd drop, she'd say dead horses don't move, he'd lay his head flat to the ground.. Wish I knew how she trained him... Would be an awesome trick...
Nice video. xD Mine does the same thing, but if I run alongside his pasture he'll canter the same pace as me too. It's amazing the bonds people can have with their horses, isn't it?
so true... Nothing compares to it. I own 2, mom owns 2, my uncle 1, and I work with 2 others.. Lets just say who ever comes to me 1st I take in.. lol... It's a great feeling when they come to you, you KNOW they enjoy the attention.. BUT, it's also heartbreaking when you take one and another gives you "the look" or neighs for you... Makes me feel like a piece of "poo".. lol
why do you type like that it annoys me!? ANY-WAYS!!!! BEAUTIFUL HORSE!!! That is WAY too cute for words that he comes running as soon as you call him!! He's kind of like a dog!!
